  • Crocodile Dundee In Los Angeles [2001] Crocodile Dundee In Los Angeles | DVD | (06/06/2005) from £4.20  |  Saving you £5.30 (53.10%)  |  RRP £9.99

Made 13 years after the previous sequel, 2001's Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles sees Paul Hogan's likeable, heroic and unworldly Aussie hero accompany his partner Sue (Linda Kozlowski, Hogan's real-life wife) to Los Angeles. There he finds himself wrestling with the niceties of the Californian lifestyle somewhat less easily than he wrestles with crocs back in the outback. Sue, meanwhile, uncovers a smuggling plot involving artworks from Yugoslavia. Dundee duly steps forward to go undercover and--with a bit of muscle and survivalist nous--saves the day. As anyone who saw Escape from LA will testify, the moral here is: never make a sequel in Los Angeles. The kindest thing that can be said about this outing is that it is harmless. It exudes a family-friendly geniality throughout that almost makes its many flaws endurable--almost but not quite. Hogan--61 when he made this--makes for an embarrassingly implausible action hero, lacquered in trowel-loads of make-up to fill in the facial creases. The antipodean-abroad jokes are insultingly feeble; Dundee strolls into a gay bar by mistake, thinks the parking valet is a mugger, can't operate the remote control, etc. There's a cameo involving Mike Tyson that belongs nowhere and Kozlowski's performance only fuels suspicion that this is a husband and wife vanity project. If nothing else, Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles is proof that Hollywood's alleged stony-heartedness is a myth, for it can only have been out of charity and benevolence to an elderly Australian thespian down on his luck that this movie was given the green light. On the DVD: Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles is presented in anamorphic widescreen format with excellent image quality, bringing out the rich contrasts between the early outback scenes and the early establishing shots of sunlit LA. Sound quality is impeccable also. The only extras, however, are the trailer and some "behind the scenes" clips so perfunctory and unrevealing they might as well not have bothered. --David Stubbs

  • The Simpsons: Complete Season 3 The Simpsons: Complete Season 3 | DVD | (29/03/2004) from £7.19  |  Saving you £32.80 (82.00%)  |  RRP £39.99

First broadcast in 1991 the third series of The Simpsons contains a clutch of candidates for "Best Simpsons Episode Ever". Homer is on such appallingly good form throughout this series that a reasonable case can be made for asserting that he has superseded the importance of his Greek namesake in the annals of culture and civilisation. The opening "Stark Raving Dad", for instance, features a guest appearance by an un-credited Michael Jackson, who plays an obese white inmate whom Homer meets while confined to a mental institution. Other standout episodes include "Like Father, Like Clown", in which Krusty reveals he is estranged from his Rabbi father; this is The Simpsons at the height of its powers, mature, ironic, erudite and touching while bristling with slapstick and Bart-inspired cheek. "Flaming Moe's" features Aerosmith and sees Homer invent a cocktail which desperate, sleazy bartender Moe steals from him. "Radio Bart" is another demonstration of the series' knack for cultural references, parodying the Billy Wilder movie Ace in the Hole. Finally, there's "Brother Can You Spare Two Dimes", in which Danny DeVito reprises his role as Homer's brother, regaining the fortune Homer lost him by inventing a Baby Translator. Immensely enjoyable at anything from a primary to a doctoral thesis level, this third year of the show demonstrates conclusively that The Simpsons is quite simply, and by a large margin, the greatest television programme ever made. --David Stubbs

  • Splash [1984] Splash | DVD | (14/10/2002) from £3.88  |  Saving you £12.00 (75.00%)  |  RRP £15.99

Splash was big news in 1984. It was the sole reason for a renewed Disney Studios forming its Touchstone Pictures subsidiary. This was so they could get away with displaying Daryl Hannah's nude bottom! It was also big news for launching the film career of Tom Hanks, who immediately became a massive box-office comedy draw in the 80s. For Ron Howard, it was the breakaway success that guaranteed he'd be able to pursue as diverse a directorial career path as he wanted to. It's a simple romance tale, spiced up by making the female lead a mermaid. The stroke of brilliance in the script was in making the comedy happen around the two leads, while letting them believably convey they are hopelessly lost in love. The comedy comes from the ever-reliable John Candy as a larger-than-life womanising older brother, and Eugene Levy as a scatty scientist. Although New York looks a little different today, the movie has hardly aged at all. Which is just as well since it boldly begins "This morning." On the DVD: Splash offers a transfer that has some defects, but colours and dark areas seem just about right. We're spoiled for extras, with a warmly nostalgic Howard joining a key production crew commentary in reminiscing on how much fun they had making the movie. There's a half-hour documentary ("Making a Splash") interviewing everyone involved, including some archival footage of the late Candy. Best of all are the original Audition Tapes for Hanks and Hannah, which reveal the consummate professionals these once-hungry stars really are. --Paul Tonks
