  • Carrie Limited Edition [Blu-ray] Carrie Limited Edition | Blu Ray | (11/12/2017) from £24.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time.--Tom Keogh

  • Buster Keaton: 3 Films (Sherlock Jr., The General, Steamboat Bill, Jr.) [Masters of Cinema] Limited Edition Blu-ray Boxed Set Buster Keaton: 3 Films (Sherlock Jr., The General, Steamboat Bill, Jr.) Limited Edition Blu-ray Boxed Set | Blu Ray | (20/11/2017) from £27.29  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Eureka Entertainment to release BUSTER KEATON: 3 FILMS, a collection of essential films from one of the greats of cinema operating at the height of his powers, as part of The Masters of Cinema Series on Blu-ray from stunning new 4K restorations in a lavish limited edition (3000 copies) 3-disc hardbound boxed set on 16 October 2017. Between 1920 and 1929, Buster Keaton created a peerless run of feature films that established him as arguably the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies. Collected here are three key films from that era; Sherlock Jr., The General and Steamboat Bill, Jr. Together they represent a true master at his peak, and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present all three films from stunning new 4K restorations available for the first time on Blu-ray anywhere in the world. Sherlock Jr. (1924) A film projectionist (and amateur detective) offers to solve the case of a missing watch, but is instead framed for the crime himself. Desperate to clear his name, the projectionist dreams of being the great Sherlock Jr., and in one of cinemas most iconic sequences, literally steps into the screen to bring his fantasies to life. The General (1926) When union spies steal his locomotive (along with his girlfriend), a plucky railway engineer pursues them doggedly across enemy lines. Containing one of the most memorable chase sequences in the history of filmmaking, The General is widely considered to be Keaton's masterpiece. Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) A steamboat captain receives a telegram informing him that his son who he has not seen for many years will be coming to visit. Eagerly expecting a strapping young lad who will help him compete with his arch-rival, he is disappointed with the effete progeny that instead shows up. Best remembered for its climactic cyclone sequence in which Keaton performs a number of death-defying stunts whilst an entire town is destroyed around him, Steamboat Bill, Jr. was Buster Keaton's last independent silent comedy and also one of his finest. BLU-RAY SPECIAL FEATURES: 3 x Blu-ray discs plus 60-page book all housed in a hardbound slipcase 1080p presentations of all three films from stunning new 4K restorations Audio commentary on Sherlock Jr. by film historian David Kalat Three new video interviews with film scholar Peter Kramer discussing Sherlock Jr., The General and Steamboat Bill, Jr Buster Keaton: The Genius Destroyed by Hollywood (52 mins) - A new documentary on Keaton and his struggles working within the Hollywood studio system Buster Keaton on Wagon Train (58 mins) an audio recording of a then 63 year old Buster Keaton in conversation with television writer Bill Cox Sherlock Jr. Original music by Timothy Brock Sherlock Jr. Tour of Filming Locations featurette Sherlock Jr. Movie Magic & Mysteries featurette The General - Original score composed and conducted by Carl Davis The General Tour of Filming Locations featurette The General Video Tour featurette The General Home Movie Footage The General Introduction by Orson Welles The General Introduction by Gloria Swanson Steamboat Bill, Jr. - Original score composed and conducted by Carl Davis Steamboat Bill, Jr. A video essay on the making of the film PLUS: A 60-PAGE BOOK featuring a new essay by Philip Kemp; notes on each film; archival writings; Keaton Family Scrapbook, a selection of Keaton family photographs generously supplied by friends of the Keaton family; and a stunning array of archival imagery

  • Der Todesking Limited Edition [DVD] Der Todesking Limited Edition | DVD | (26/02/2018) from £24.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

The second feature film from German provocateur Jörg Buttgereit, director of Nekromantik and Nekromantik 2, Der Todesking (The King of Death) presents seven suicides across seven days of the week. As a chain letter from the self-proclaimed Brotherhood of the 7th Day circulates encouraging its recipients to end their lives, a series of grim murder-suicides unfold. In one vignette, a young woman massacres a room of concert-goers before turning the gun on herself; in another, a man, driven to madness by some unspecified mental disturbance, repeatedly slams his head into a wall before collapsing in a pool of his own blood These are just some of depictions of death and despair that make up the tortured fabric of Der Todesking. Regarded by many as director Jörg Buttgereit's most accomplished work, Der Todesking is an existential masterpiece - a powerfully haunting howl of rage from one of the genre's most underrated filmmakers. 3-DISC DIRECTOR-APPROVED LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS Director's approved HD transfer from the original 16mm negative High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations Original Stereo Audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray) Optional English subtitles Limited edition packaging featuring new artwork by Gilles Vranckx Limited edition certificate featuring original artwork Replica Brotherhood of the 7th Day Chain Letter Der Todesking Soundtrack CD Limited Edition 60-page book DISC 1 [BLU-RAY] & DISC 2 [DVD] ?DER TODESKING' Audio commentary by Jörg Buttgereit and co-writer Franz Rodenkirchen From Bundy to Lautréamont - Jörg Buttgereit in conversation with journalist Graham Rae at the 2016 Manchester Festival of Fantastic Films The Making of Der Todesking - vintage production featurette Footage from the original 1990 Berlin premiere Corpse Fucking Art - 1992 documentary bringing together the making of featurettes of Nekromantik, Der Todesking and Nekromantik 2 Der Gollob (1983, 25 mins) - short film by Jörg Buttgereit, newly transferred in HD and viewable with optional director's audio commentary Two short films by producer Manfred O. • Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights [2001] Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights | DVD | (09/09/2002) from £15.98  |  Saving you £-4.98 (-24.90%)  |  RRP £19.99

Some comedies secure cult status after just one episode. The first series of Phoenix Nights, created by and starring Bolton-born comic Peter Kay, is one of those rare gems that few saw on first showing but that everyone was soon talking about. Wheelchair-bound Brian Potter (Kay) runs the Phoenix, a shabby social club populated by an assortment of wonderfully observed characters. It's grim up North and despite the best efforts of the staff to inject life into the proceedings--be it an alternative comedy night, a version of Robot Wars in Potter's beloved Pennine Suite or a Wild West extravaganza--each evening's entertainment always ends badly. Undaunted, the Phoenix denizens continue to strive for their dream: a world in which "clubland never dies". Even though Kay is the focus of the show (having also directed and penned the series), this is no star vehicle; the hapless security guards, the club entertainer Jerry, and Ray Von the dodgy DJ all combine in an ensemble comedy the like of which hasn't been seen since Fawlty Towers. You have to watch it a couple of times just to catch all the visual gags, let alone pick up on all the nuances of the brilliantly written script. If you missed it first time round, now's your chance to own one of the best British sit-coms of recent years. On the DVD: Phoenix Nights on disc comes with a plethora of extras to enjoy. "One Man and His Horse" is behind the scenes footage of Trigger and his handler (who is almost as entertaining as his charge); there are some great deleted scenes, trailers for the first series and an episode-by-episode sequence of outtakes where the cast hilarity is definitely contagious. A commentary from Kay and some of the team consists more of reminiscence than information, but is well worth a listen. --Kristen Bowditch

Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as nine times more suspenseful than its predecessor, was The Cat O' Nine Tails. When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden, Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute's scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case. But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. Ronnie Corbett (The Two Ronnies) plays Timothy Lumsden, a part specially written for him, and has turned him into one of the best-loved comic figures on British television. Barbara Lott plays his domineering mother to perfection and his long-suffering father is portrayed by William Moore. Marguerite Hardiman features as Timothys sister, Muriel. The problem is a delicate one as Tim still lives at home with his parents. His father, who has long since retreated into a world of his own, is not a threat to Timothy, but his mother the domineering, interfering kind has to be viewed more seriously. The trouble is that she simply refuses to recognise the fact that her son is no longer a little boy, but rather a grown man despite his diminutive stature with perfectly normal, if persistently thwarted, drives and instincts. And not wishing to offend his mother, Timothy usually suffers her seemingly well-meaning intentions. It is obvious that she rules not only the house but also Timothy, through a campaign of sustained, yet subtle (and often hilarious), psychological terror tactics!

Though Hammer Films ceased theatrical production in the mid-1970s, the TV series Hammer House of Horror afforded the studio a last hurrah in 1980. Though it uses original scripts rather than adaptations of published stories, the series feels like an update of Hammer's earlier Journey to the Unknown, with a mix of contemporary settings, predictable twist endings, mock-gruesome horror, mild sex, familiar TV faces and sly camp that puts it on the shelf somewhere between Nigel Kneale's Beasts and Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected. The shows are variously directed by Hammer regulars Don Sharp (Kiss of the Vampire), Peter Sasdy (Countess Dracula), Robert Young (Vampire Circus) and Alan Gibson (Dracula AD 1972). --Kim Newman Volume One Episodes: "The House That Bled to Death; "The Silent Scream"; "Two Faces of Evil". A box set is also available.
