The Ganges River (Gang Ma or Great Mother) is the holiest river in the world. Rising from the pure glacial meltwaters of the Himalayas it flows down onto India's Northern Plain then heads eastwards into the swamplands of Bangladesh finally discharging a 500-km (310-mile) tongue of red silt into the Bay of Bengal. As well as filling wells and irrigating crops to sustain the cities and villages along its banks it is the spiritual life-blood for India's primary religion Hinduism. Bathing in the Ganges remains the lifelong ambition of many of India's believing masses who consider the river to be a living goddess. People gather daily at her banks to murmur prayers baptise children wash vibrant coloured saris drink her waters or simply die - believing such acts help absolve sins and lead the way to Nirvana. Ganges reveals the source of the river high in the Himalayas - the youngest mountain range in the world - and follows its route as it sharply incises the mountains on its journey south-east. Along the way we discover the Hindu story of the river's creation and how it supports the myriad forms of life that thrive on its banks.

  • Ancient Worlds [Blu-ray] Ancient Worlds | Blu Ray | (06/12/2010) from £9.99  |  Saving you £20.00 (66.70%)  |  RRP £29.99

Ancient Worlds is a six-part odyssey from the first cities of Mesopotamia to the Christianisation of the Roman Empire with archaeologist and historian Richard Miles at the helm. The series tells the story of what Richard argues is mankind's greatest achievement - civilisation. The series offers an epic sweep of history against a panorama of stunning locations and bold propositions about the origins of human society. In the 21st century we might fondly imagine that it is humankind's natural state to live together in communities that extend beyond blood ties. As Ancient Worlds sets out to show however no such assumptions were made by the first clan chiefs who decided to form communities in southern Iraq in 4500 BC. There is nothing natural about the city and its founders understood that its very survival relied on compromise ruthlessness sacrifice and toil. In the West we have consigned the term 'civilisation' to the museum display case. Embarrassed by its chauvinistic and elitist connotations we have increasingly taken refuge in more politically correct and soft-focused terms such as 'culture' to explain our origins. This series seeks to rescue civilisation from its enforced retirement and celebrate such a hard-fought invention.

  • It Might Get Loud [Blu-ray] [2008] It Might Get Loud | Blu Ray | (18/01/2010) from £8.00  |  Saving you £16.99 (68.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

Three generations of rock guitarists come together for It Might Get Loud, a 2009 documentary directed by Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth). These are not just your garden-variety guitar gods: Jimmy Page, in his mid-'60s at the time of the film, founded Led Zeppelin, who dominated the 1970s following the breakup of the Beatles. As a member of U2, 48-year-old David Evans, better known as the Edge, created one of the most distinctive and influential sounds of the past quarter century. And 34-year-old Jack White (of the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, and the Dead Weather) was described by one music publication as "the most significant rock 'n' roll figure of the past ten years." Guggenheim, who followed the three around for the better part of a year, takes us into their individual lives, past and present. There are shots of Page as a young London session musician, with the Yardbirds and Zeppelin, at Headley Grange (the estate where much of the fourth Zep album was made), and at home with his record collection. The Edge takes us to the Dublin classroom where U2 first rehearsed, as well as to the practice room he uses now (never a virtuoso soloist, he developed a style based on texture and a mind-boggling array of effects); and White, whose insistence on authenticity is admirable but perhaps a tad self-conscious, constructs a "guitar" from a plank of wood, a piece of wire, and a Coke bottle (he also plays a recording by the primitive bluesman Son House, featuring just voice and handclaps, that White says is still his biggest inspiration). The three also converge on a Hollywood sound stage, where they chat and a do a little jamming on Zep's "In My Time of Dying" (with all three playing slide guitar) and the Band's "The Weight." It's hard to say if the film's appeal will extend beyond guitar freaks and fans of these particular bands, but at the very least, It Might Get Loud offers some interesting insight into the soul and inspiration behind some of pop's best and most popular music. --Sam Graham

Nearly three decades on, is Anvil! The Story Of Anvil finally the film that finally gives This Is Spinal Tap a run for its money? Quite possibly so. The recipient of far-reaching acclaim, and with a real run for being named film of the year, this is a superb documentary, that is all the more staggering for being true. Anvil! The Story Of Anvil follows the band of its title, a heavy metal group who enjoyed moderate success in the late 70s and early 80s, but kept going even when the light of fame and success shone elsewhere. Thus, we meet the band?s members--Steve ?Lips? Kudlow and Robb Reiner--as they hold down day jobs, record an album and head off on a European tour that could have been taken straight out of the Spinal Tap playbook. As Anvil! The Story Of Anvil develops, though, there?s a drama at the heart of it that mixes in with the many frequent laughs. And, as it turns out, it?s a film that out of nowhere manages to move you, pretty much the last thing you expect of it. This is, and there?s no two ways about it, a quite brilliant film, and one of the very best documentaries in some time. It?s outrageously entertaining, very funny and yet human to the core. Anvil! The Story Of Anvil is going to take some beating, and don?t be surprised if it?s another three decades before anything else comes close to it and This Is Spinal Tap? --Jon Foster
