This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time.--Tom Keogh

  • The Package [DVD] The Package | DVD | (04/12/2017) from £9.48  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Gene Hackman is a career officer assigned a routine mission well beneath him: deliver a prisoner (Tommy Lee Jones) from Europe to the United States. However, the simple assignment becomes a daring cat-and-mouse game played as the last flames of the Cold War are flickering. This is the first of three films that teamed Jones with director Andrew Davis. In 1989 Jones was a wild card: an actor respected but only popping up in grade B fare. After Davis' Under Siege and The Fugitive, Jones was America's favourite gruff character actor, with an Oscar on his mantel. With a weaker script, Davis still creates the same kind of magic here. Hackman is superb as the officer, an action role similar to others that the nearly 60-year-old unexpectedly excelled at (Bat 21, Narrow Margin) during this period. Tight, tense and with no letup in the third act, The Package is a good gem for a Saturday night flick. --Doug Thomas

MOLLY REALLY KNOWS HOW TO CUT MEN DOWN TO SIZE!!! Representing something of an anomaly in the career of director Matt Cimber (whose other credits include such blaxploitation fare as The Candy Tangerine Man) The Witch Who Came from the Sea is an unnerving journey into madness and murder starring Millie Perkins (The Diary of Anne Frank). Molly (Perkins) experiences violent fantasies in which she ties muscular men up before bloodily dispatching them with a razor. But when a news report announces the shocking double-murder of two football players which strongly echoes one of Molly's most recent depraved flights of fancy, the fantasy starts to bleed into reality literally. Written by Perkins' late husband Robert Thom (Death Race 2000), The Witch Who Came from the Sea features early cinematography from DOP Dean Cundey, who would go on to expand his genre credentials with his work on Escape from New York and The Thing. • Black Sabbath [Blu-ray] Black Sabbath | Blu Ray | (04/12/2017) from £13.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Black Sunday was such a huge hit that a follow-up was swiftly demanded, and horror maestro Mario Bava duly devised this three-part horror anthology blending modern and period stories. In the giallo-style ?The Telephone', a woman is terrorised by her former pimp after his escape from prison, and tries to escape him with the help of her lesbian lover, who has a dark secret of her own. In the Victorian-era ?The Drop of Water', a nurse steals a ring from the corpse of a dead spiritualist, which naturally tries to get it back. But it's the 19th-century Russian story ?The Wurdalak' that comes closest to Bava's earlier classic, with the great Boris Karloff as a much-loved paterfamilias who might not be entirely what he seems. Features: Bava's direction is as stylish as ever, and Black Sabbath is almost a compendium of his favourite themes. High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation of two versions of the film; ?I tre volti della paura' the European version with score by Roberto Nicolosi & ?Black Sabbath' the re-edited and re-dubbed AIP version with Les Baxter score, on home video for the first time English SDH subtitles for English Audio and a new English subtitle translation of the Italian audio Audio Commentary with Bava biographer and expert Tim Lucas
