Although most commonly associated with the Wuxia genre, in 1979 King Hu directed the epic fantasy-horror, Legend of the Mountain. Heavily influenced by traditional Chinese aesthetics and Zen Buddhist philosophy, it has come to be regarded as one of his greatest filmmaking achievements. A young scholar, Ho Yunqing (Shih Jun, A Touch of Zen, Dragon Inn), is tasked by an eminent monk to transcribe a Buddhist sutra said to have immense power over the spirits of the afterlife. To execute his work in peace, he travels to an isolated monastery deep in the mountains, where he encounters a number of strange people, including the mysterious and beautiful Melody (Hsu Feng, A Touch of Zen, Dragon Inn). As malicious spirits attempt to steal the sutra, Ho becomes entangled in a conflict between duelling forces of good and evil. Will he leave the mountain alive? Adapted from a Song Dynasty folk tale, Legend of the Mountain exemplifies King Hu's masterful command of spectacular visuals and philosophical insights into life and existence. Hayao Miyazaki had been cradling the idea for this wonderful fantasy for a long time before he finally decided to write and direct it. Set in rural Japan during the 1950s, My Neighbour Totoro is full of the magical touches that Miyazaki has become famous for.Tatsuo Kusakabe and his two daughters, Mei and Satsuki, have moved to the country to be near their ailing mother who resides at a local hospital. As the girls explore their surroundings, the younger sibling, Mei, believes that the forest is inhabited by magical creatures, much to the amusement of her father and sister. However, one day Mei gets lost in the forest and discovers a group of Totoros - protectors of the forest. Eventually Mei convinces Satsuki to come with her and the three have a series of wonderful adventures together, as their mother begins to recuperate.Hayao Miyazaki's imagination is simply incredible and My Neighbour Totoro perfectly displays his talent to create stories and characters that you really care about. Aside from the variously sized Totoros there is the magnificently surreal 'Catbus' to contend with too! Also, you get a first look at the 'dust bunnies' - later seen in Spirited Away!

Originally turned down flat by the British Board of Film Censors and initially released exclusively in London in a version heavily cut by its nervous distributor The Beast is Walerian Borowczyk's most notorious film although it's much wittier and more playful than its subject matter might suggest. Lucy Broadhurst (Lisbeth Hummel) is due to inherit a substantial fortune but on condition that she marries the son of her late father's best friend. But Mathurin de l'Espérance (Pierre Benedetti) seems more interested in his horses than in his bride-to-be and when Lucy finds out about the story of his 18th-century ancestor Romilda (Sirpa Lane) and brings her to life in one of the most outrageous dream sequences in cinema history we begin to realise just how bizarre Mathurin's bloodline truly is. Receiving its Blu-ray world premiere this new high-definition restoration by Argos Films is supported by the original short-film version of The Beast and Venus on the Half-Shell (1975) Borowczyk's portrait of the painter Bona Tibertelli de Pisis and her erotic fusions of men women and molluscs. • Ghost In The Shell [Blu-ray] Ghost In The Shell | Blu Ray | (20/03/2017) from £6.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

The skilful blending of drawn animation and computer-generated imagery excited anime fans when this science fiction mystery was released in 1995: many enthusiasts believe Ghost suggests what the future of anime will be, at least in the short term. The film is set in the not-too-distant future, when an unnamed government uses lifelike cyborgs or "enhanced" humans for undercover work. One of the key cyborgs is The Major, Motoko Kusanagi, who resembles a cross between The Terminator and a Playboy centrefold. She finds herself caught up in a tangled web of espionage and counterespionage as she searches for the mysterious superhacker known as "The Puppet Master." Mamoru Oshii directs with a staccato rhythm, alternating sequences of rapid-fire action (car chases, gun battles, explosions) with static dialogue scenes that allow the characters to sort out the vaguely mystical and rather convoluted plot. Kusanagi's final quote from I Corinthians suggests that electronic evolution may compliment and eventually supplant organic evolution. The minor nudity, profanity, and considerable violence would earn Ghost in the Shell at least a PG rating. --Charles Solomon
