  • Welcome To Death Row [2001] Welcome To Death Row | DVD | (08/10/2001) from £5.78  |  Saving you £-9.24 (-154.30%)  |  RRP £5.99

Welcome to Death Row tells the unauthorised history of the most notorious rap label ever. And what a story it is, with enough blood and betrayal to satiate the Borgias and machinations that would make Machiavelli proud. The rise and fall of Death Row and its power-hungry CEO, Marion "Suge" Knight, makes The Godfather look like a bedtime story. The film centres on the testimony of Michael Harris--also known as "Harry O", as in octopus, because he had his business fingers in so many pies--who provided Suge Knight with the seed money to set up Death Row, and assigned his lawyer David Kenner to oversee the label's business affairs. The film traces the entire controversial history of the label, which at its height was turning over $500 million a year, and the impact it had on not only the music industry but American culture. "It was like working in a prison", says Doug Young, the label's record promoter, of Suge Knight's predilection for hiring gangsters and ex-felons. The film also details the relationship between Death Row and its biggest star, Tupac Shakur, and the effect that Shakur's sudden death in a Las Vegas drive-by shooting had on the label's fortunes (a story told in greater depth in Savidge's film Thug Immortal).Although none of the major players in this drama are represented on tape--Dr Dre and Interscope Records heads Jimmy Iovine and Ted Fields are as conspicuous by their absence as lawyer David Kenner and Suge Knight, the villains of the piece--the producers have unearthed an alarming number of believable behind-the-scenes sources including record promoters, managers, private investigators and former associates and employees of the label. Director Savidge wisely uses talking heads to tell his story, weaving into it a wealth of archive material and previously unseen home-video footage. The epic narrative is split into discrete chapters but, with so much information and opinion flying about, at times the chronology of events becomes confused. Yet this does little to spoil a documentary that goes a long way to revealing the intimate connection between the music industry and organised crime, and the desire for power and glory that drives them both.On the DVD: As if there wasn't enough information to digest in the documentary (which is presented in a clean 1:85.1 anamorphic format), the extra features on the DVD provide even more supplementary evidence. There are outtakes from the interviews used in the main feature, as well as additional interview footage of Snoop Dogg and Harry O. There is uncensored security camera footage of a fight in the lobby of the MGM Grand involving the Death Row entourage that preceded the death of Tupac Shakur by minutes, a music video for "Deep Cover" (the song that launched Snoop Dogg) and a fascinating audio commentary by director Savidge and producers Jeff Scheftel and Stephen A Housden, in which they relate the difficulties encountered in obtaining the trust of those they interviewed and the factors they took into consideration when constructing the film. Savidge recalls that the model they had in mind was the fractured, multi-perspective narrative of Kurosawa's Rashomon. --Chris Campion

Michael Ball Live at the Royal Albert Hall is a tour-de-force from a performer who manages to combine West-End stardom with great success as Britain's favourite MOR performer. By the end of the 1980s he was already a youthful veteran of some of the decade's biggest musicals, including Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera. But his performance in Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love, which spawned the hit single "Love Changes Everything", turned him into a major star--a status he has maintained with best-selling albums, sell-out concert tours and television series. As this 1999 concert reveals, he is at his best singing show songs which give him a character to get his teeth into: "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables", for example. And he is a first-rate pop singer whose gallant 1992 bid for Eurovision glory is recalled with the up tempo "One Step out of Time". He favours dramatic ballads and sometimes takes them way over the top: there's more than a touch of Dusty Springfield in his histrionic gestures. But it's all delivered with an engaging charm that clearly delights the predominantly female audience. Also included is a "Backstage with Michael Ball" documentary. --Piers Ford

IN 1962 FOUR YOUNG MEN JOHN LENNON, PAUL McCARTNEY, GEORGE HARRISON AND RINGO STARR CAME TOGETHER TO FORM THE 20TH CENTURY MUSICAL PHENOMENON KNOWN AS, THE BEATLES. The band stormed Europe in 1963, and, in 1964, they conquered America. Their groundbreaking world tours changed global youth culture forever and, arguably, invented mass entertainment as we know it today. All the while, the group were composing and recording a series of extraordinarily successful singles and albums. However the relentless pressure of such unprecedented fame, that in 1966 became uncontrollable turmoil, led to the decision to stop touring. In the ensuing years The Beatles were then free to focus on a series of albums that changed the face of recorded music. Master storyteller and Oscar® winner*, Ron Howard, explores this incredible journey in his own unique way: How did The Beatles do this? How did they cope with all the fame and pressure? How did they not only survive, but go on to revolutionise popular music? With original interviews, footage, staggering live performances, and the intimate study of character that Ron Howard is known for, he puts us right inside this extraordinary adventure, answering the question everyone always wants to know: What was it like to be there?!!

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live At Montreaux 1982 And 1985 Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live At Montreaux 1982 And 1985 | DVD | (01/11/2004) from £11.34  |  Saving you £-1.35 (-13.50%)  |  RRP £9.99

If you have even a passing interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan's peerless mastery of urban blues guitar, you must own Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985. Spaced almost exactly three years apart, these concerts (60 and 93 minutes, respectively) represent the Texan blues god at his fiery best, with Double Trouble (drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon) laying the solid foundation upon which SRV built a Fender-driven sound as fierce as it was perfectly refined. The '82 show was truly "success in disguise," because despite booing from a festival audience lulled by a day of acoustic blues, and the stunned dejection that SRV felt after persevering through a uncompromising set, this was the turning point in SRV's career, leading to post-show encounters with Jackson Browne and David Bowie, who proved instrumental in bringing Stevie's music to an appreciative global audience. When Stevie, Chris, and Tommy returned to Switzerland three years later, with organist Reese Wynans adding rich new dimension to the Double Trouble sound, the Montreux crowd was primed for a rip-snorting set, and SRV's jubilant response is a joyous thing to witness. One of SRV's favorite bluesmen, Johnny Copeland, appears for a three-song triumph in a set that's uniformly superior and ecstatically energized. Basic three-camera coverage is all you need, although guitar students--for whom this DVD is a godsend--will surely wish for more emphasis on SRV's picking and fretwork. Recording quality is superb in the Montreux tradition, with 5.1-channel remixes that surpass the original masters. A splendid 23-minute documentary features retrospective interviews with Layton, Shannon, Browne, and John Mayer, and the accompanying booklet includes a heartfelt reminiscence from Bowie. Stevie Ray may be gone, but Live at Montreux ensures that his gold-standard legacy will endure. --Jeff Shannon

The first disc titled Voliminal is a 80-minute film made up of rapidly edited scenes shot on handheld digital cameras for 28 months; during the making of Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) and on 'The Subliminal Verses' world tour. This is not a slick concert film with interspersed backstage footage. Nor is it a travelogue of fantastic sights and fabulous babes. This is survival in the belly of the beast. Crahan has assembled the shots into a dizzying cacophony of deafening sound and jarring imagery that's both challenging and impossible to ignore. Like the films of Harmony Korine Voliminal juxtaposes seemingly unrelated ideas into a collage of disturbingly surreal reality. The result is a shocking disorienting view of the thrill and terror of dangling on the precipice of the abyss. 'It's vomit at its finest ' explains Crahan. Buried within the septic folds of the first Voliminal: Inside The Nine disc are nine 'rabbit holes' that viewers can access with their DVD remotes. Each hole will feature a short starring each member of the band. The second disc of Voliminal: Inside The Nine features exclusive in-depth interviews with each of the band members. The discussions cover 10 years of band history in unflinching candor. 'The band is 10 years old and I felt that we needed to talk for real ' Crahan says. 'We're going into our places of choice individually and you're being invited all the way in. Hopefully you'll be able to stomach what is real.' In addition to personal band interviews the second DVD will include bonus live footage taken from festivals and television performances from around the world and the music videos from Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) - 'Duality ' 'Vermilion ' 'Before I Forget ' 'The Nameless' and the controversial 'Vermilion 2 ' which was never officially released. Fans will also get an up-close view of the 'death masks' Slipknot use in concert. Disc 1 - Track List: 1. Voliminal - The Movie Disc 2 Track List: Promo Videos: 1. Duality 2. Vermilion 3. • Meat Loaf - Hits Out Of Hell (1984) Meat Loaf - Hits Out Of Hell (1984) | DVD | (05/03/2001) from £9.99  |  Saving you £-9.58 (-119.90%)  |  RRP £7.99

Though Hits out of Hell shares the title of Meat Loaf's 1984 greatest hits album, the tracklisting is not quite the same: curiously, the DVD omits "Dead Ringer for Love", "Midnight at the Lost and Found" and "All Revved Up with No Place to Go", but includes, perhaps by way of compensation, "More Than You Deserve" and "If You Really Want To". Such considerations are, of course, of only superficial importance: once producer and songwriter Jim Steinman had patented the Meat Loaf template on 1977's 30-million-selling Bat Out of Hell--an engagingly preposterous synthesis of Springsteen's Born to Run, Spector's Be My Baby, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries", Led Zeppelin IV and the Broadway musical--he didn't tinker much with the formula. The video clips that accompany the songs tend either to be workmanlike "live" performances or complicated mini-operas--the latter have not dated tremendously well. On the DVD: This DVD offers a choice of Dolby Surround Sound or PCM Stereo, and has a refreshingly simple and easy to navigate menu offering instant access to different tracks. The special features are desultory in the extreme: a brief biography of the Meat Loaf phenomenon and a discography. --Andrew Mueller
