  • Madonna - Drowned World Tour Live [2001] Madonna - Drowned World Tour Live | DVD | (03/07/2012) from £4.48  |  Saving you £0.00 (0.00%)  |  RRP £10.99

The Queen of Pop has done it again and offered her fans and music impresarios alike a musical performance to be remembered. Madonna: Drowned World Tour--filmed in her home town of Detroit on August 26, 2001--is an amazing pop concert and a visually stunning modern-dance and multi-media piece encompassing all the recent incarnations of this chameleon-like performer. Never one to shy away from championing new styles, both in clothes and music, Madonna is still as raunchy as she was on her Erotica tour, but the Drowned World Tour also offers a much more effeminate and intelligent side to her performance. This time we see a Geisha/Japanese performance during "Frozen" and a jokey southern-belle line-dancing romp during "Dont Tell Me". The monarch of performance has also discovered the best way to undergo an elaborate costume change without keeping your audience waiting--simply ply them with stunningly directed music videos on a multitude of screens and hang two solitary male dancers upside down to perform feats of dance perfection. This truly impressive show holds as much for Madonna fans as it does for anyone who is interested in studying modern performance and dance routines--and Madonna is certainly well versed enough to teach in this field with almost 20 successful years in the business. The Drowned World Tour--rumoured to be her last live show--goes to prove that Madonna still reigns supreme. On the DVD: Although the special features are hardly a ray of light--simply an impressive photo gallery and some Web links--the picture and sound on this DVD are excellent. As a champion of all things new Madonnas DVD uses a picture perfect format of 4:3, and superb sound quality: with a choice of Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1 and DTS 5.1 youll feel like youre at the concert in a prime seat. Another impressive feature is the ability to view the song lyrics, allowing you to strut around your living room like a prima donna with this glamorous version of Karaoke! --Nikki Disney

  • Till the Clouds Roll By Till the Clouds Roll By | DVD | (29/07/2003) from £3.19  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £2.99

Till the Clouds Roll By was the big MGM extravaganza of 1946, purporting to be a life of the first giant of the stage musical, Jerome Kern. Great chunks of Show Boat, Sweet Adeline and Sunny dominate while, in between excerpts, reliable Robert Walker does valiant work as Kern, lending a gentle credibility to even the most extravagant licenses taken by the writers. The liberties taken with Kern's story beggar belief, but what a fine excuse this is to sit back and enjoy a procession of gems from the great American songbook, performed by genuine legends. Judy Garland has two numbers as Marilyn Miller, both directed by husband Vincente Minnelli at the peak of their creative and personal relationships. Singing "Who?", she has to float down the proverbial staircase, obviously pregnant (Liza was born a short time later). Others to shine include Kathryn Grayson, June Allyson, Dinah Shore and, more bizarrely, a skinny young Sinatra drafted in at the last for a rousing "Old Man River". Most poignant of all is the presence of Lena Horne who, but for the racist values of Hollywood at the time, would have been a great film star. Ever confined to guest appearances, she here sings the songs of Show Boat's tragic half-caste Julie. When MGM filmed the musical in 1951, the same part went to Ava Gardner. On the DVD: Till the Clouds Roll By may boast digital remastering, but it could have done with a deal of restoration, too. Presented in 4:3 format, the picture quality is often pixellated and the soundtrack in "HiFi Stereo" is muffled and occasionally cracked. Considering its value as an archive of great performers, some rarely seen on film, this film deserves better DVD treatment. --Piers Ford

  • Woodstock [1969] Woodstock | DVD | (09/09/1999) from £4.71  |  Saving you £9.28 (66.30%)  |  RRP £13.99

The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock 'n' roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it's still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd ("half a million strong") expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, mid-concert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music--a non-stop parade of rock 'n' roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there--it's a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

His smooth singing style good looks and seemingly endless charm ensured that Dean Martin was a global superstar with a legion of adoring fans. As part of the legendary Rat Pack he took stage entertainment to a new level combining effortless singing with a unique comedic style. Built around Bryan Adams' Ireland show, Live at Slane Castle, Ireland is just one of the stops on his massive world tour in 2000. Adams, the gravely voiced "Groover from Vancouver", rose to prominence in the 1980s with rock hits such as "Cuts Like a Knife" and "Summer of '69", but has more recently been transformed into something of a Hollywood troubadour, scoring hits with songs such as "Everything I Do, I Do It For You" (from Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves) and "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?" (from Don Juan DeMarco). Flanked by drummer Mickey Curry and guitarist Scott on guitar, the trio perform amidst the stately surroundings of Slane Castle. Bryan and his band cover most of the singer's vast repertoire, including "18 Til I Die", "Heaven", "Run to You", "Can't Stop This Thing We Started", "Best of Me" and his recent hit with Mel C, "When You're Gone" (for which the indefatigable songstress pops in unexpectedly for a croon). Adams proves he is a confident and charismatic host, bringing fans up on stage to sing with him, cracking jokes and generally behaving like soft rock's "Mr. Nice Guy". Other musical guests are drafted in throughout the show, namely Davy Spillane and Chicane's Nick Bracegirdle. The crowd show their appreciation by singing well-known lines when the band fall purposefully silent and holding their lighters aloft for the more poignant moments. There are not a lot of musical adventures in Adams' music--just slightly anachronistic and often clichéd formulas--but for the 56,000 people watching at Slane Castle (many of them surprisingly young and enthusiastic), it certainly seems to do the trick. On the DVD: though the concert gives a good profile of Adams and his music, the extras on the DVD struggle to be quite so entertaining. The accompanying booklet is colourful enough with a few bad photos of Bryan inside, but is intensely uninformative. On the disc there are backstage sections, which show him rehearsing to a crowd of two, and the "nerve wracking" moments just before he goes on stage. As insights go, these are banal to say the least. The interview section also misses a great opportunity to ask the singer about a 20-year career full of big hits, concentrating instead on such racy and profound topics as pre-gig nerves and favourite song. The gallery of photography--some shot by the excellent Anton Corbijn--is tastefully done and there is also the option to view five of the songs from the 360-degree static view, a facility that is a novelty but hardly captures the moment. There is an opportunity to go "interactive" with Bryan by placing the disc into your PC.--Paul Sullivan

  • James Taylor - Live At The Beacon Theatre [1998] James Taylor - Live At The Beacon Theatre | DVD | (15/12/2003) from £5.79  |  Saving you £0.20 (3.30%)  |  RRP £5.99

Sensitive singer-songwriter, soft-rock poster boy, baby-boomer troubadour: James Taylor has outlived the stereotypes offered by fans and critics alike by simply staying his musical course and continuing to refine his familiar, deceptively mellifluous style. This 1998 concert displays Taylor's craftsmanship and easy rapport with both his band and his audience to satisfying effect, offering a repertoire that draws from his entire career while providing a generous selection of songs from his Grammy-winning 1997 set, Hourglass. Fans will love it, of course, but even jaded listeners can find fresh feeling and formidable expertise here.By now, Taylor's skill at low-key love songs is a given, making him an archetypal "sensitive New Age guy" on the strength of his canny mix of emotional vulnerability, romantic imagery, and understated delivery. Less obviously, Taylor has gradually transformed the shadows of disillusionment audible in his earliest songs into a nuanced acknowledgement of his own age. "Line 'Em Up," from Hourglass, typifies his skill at limning disarmingly lucid, frankly philosophical vignettes, here woven around a recollection of Richard Nixon's last hurrah, while "Jump Up Behind Me" affords a testament to self-determination ultimately as serious in theme as it is buoyant in its musical framework. Throughout, Taylor's stage band proves a thoroughbred, its accompaniment rock solid and delicately detailed, and perfectly matched to a crack backing chorus.Among the first video concerts produced with DVD in mind, Live at the Beacon Theatre has been in heavy rotation in home demonstration suites ever since its release, an achievement understandable after hearing the crystalline 5.1 mix engineered by Frank Filipetti, who shared a Grammy as co-producer on Hourglass and snagged a second award for his engineering of that album. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com
