The pair face temperatures of -40C that will instantly freeze exposed flesh hurricane-force winds that threaten to dash them against the mountain peaks and very low levels of oxygen. As the day of the flight approaches they face the reality of the challenge ahead and are beset with machine troubles failed test flights and a damaged engine. At his lowest ebb Bear has some uncharacteristic doubts: 'I'd always planned this project to be ambitious but safe; the bottom line is it's ambitious but it's not safe.' • David Attenborough's Life Of Birds [1998] David Attenborough's Life Of Birds | DVD | (04/12/2000) from £19.88  |  Saving you £10.11 (33.70%)  |  RRP £29.99

Like the albatross glimpsed in the beginning of this 10-part series The Life of Birds quickly takes flight. Sir David Attenborough hosts this unprecedented and extraordinary global look at the magnificent and often curious winged species with which we share our planet. Like the best wildlife shows, The Life of Birds offers a fresh and accessible view of creatures we may take for granted (didn't Alfred Hitchcock warn us about that?). The focus of this series is not on the different bird species, but on bird behaviour. Remarkable and awe-inspiring footage preserves the wide range of tools and techniques with which birds fly, hunt for food, attract a mate, hatch their chicks and defend themselves against predators. Attenborough pops up in the most remote, most exotic locales, with occasional comic effect: at one point, night-vision cameras capture the rare sight of the nocturnal kiwi as it forages for food on a New Zealand beach; the camera pans to reveal scant paces away our guide shining a flashlight on the nonplussed bird. --Donald Liebenson

  • March Of The Penguins [Blu-ray] [2005] March Of The Penguins | Blu Ray | (07/05/2007) from £5.49  |  Saving you £19.50 (78.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

Coming from a French director Luc Jacquet the Oscar-winning family documentary March Of The Penguins would have to be a love story. And it is in that it follows the mating rituals of the emperor penguin one of the most resilient animals on earth. Each summer after a nourishing period of deep-sea feeding the penguins pop up onto the ice and begin their procession across the frozen tundra of Antarctica. Walking in single file they are a sight to behold. Hundreds converge from every direction moving instinctively toward their mating ground. Once there they mingle and chatter until they find the perfect mate - a monogamous match that will last a year through the brutal winter and into the spring. During that time the mother will birth an egg and then leave for the ocean to feed again. The father will stay to protect the egg through the freezing blizzards and pure darkness of winter which would be deadly to practically any other species. Finally with spring the egg hatches and the baby penguins are born. Mothers return from the sea to reunite with their families and feed the starving newborns while the fathers are finally relieved of their protective duties after months without food. The film is remarkable in its story which is narrated by Morgan Freeman whose dignified voice gives the penguins the grave admiration they deserve. But even more incredible is its photography which shows the penguins hunting underwater sliding on the ice and in the midst of kissing. At one point the camera even zooms inside the mouth of a penguin as it regurgitates for its young. A story of love and more strikingly survival March Of The Penguins is any eye-opening and educational experience.

  • The Living Planet [1983] The Living Planet | DVD | (01/09/2003) from £8.99  |  Saving you £7.79 (22.30%)  |  RRP £34.99

In 1979 David Attenborough presented Life on Earth, the first wildlife blockbuster series, a chronicle of three-and-a-half billion years of natural history. The Living Planet followed five years later, an equally ambitious 12-part documentary which spanned the globe with portraits of each of the major geographical regions which offer home to life. Attenborough demonstrates how even in the most hostile of environments, from the volcanic "Furnaces of the Earth" to "The Frozen World" of mountains and tundra, the Arctic and Antarctic, live maintains a foothold. He takes us to "The Northern Forests", the "Jungle", "Seas of Grass" and "The Baking Deserts", and ever the genial host, details how in all its endless diversity, life is ingeniously suited to its surroundings. With breathtaking imagery we meet our fellow inhabitants, from penguins to polar bears, lions to scorpions, oaks to eagles, and journey on to "The Open Ocean" and the "New Worlds" which mankind itself is rapidly fashioning through ever more radical technological change. The series ends with an impassioned environmental plea which rings even more urgent now than in 1984. The Trials of Life (1990) and The Private Life of Plants (1994) further detail The Living Planet. --Gary S. Dalkin

  • Penguin - Spy in the Huddle [DVD] Penguin - Spy in the Huddle | DVD | (08/04/2013) from £12.09  |  Saving you £5.90 (32.80%)  |  RRP £17.99

From the makers of Earth flight and Polar Bear - Spy on the Ice, the spy cameras are back with this latest BBC series. This time they travel to Antarctica and the southern oceans, where they focus on the most charismatic and popular bird on Earth - the penguin. Spy cameras cleverly disguised as life size penguins infiltrate the colonies to capture their emotional and often amusing lives. The emperor penguin has the most incredible life story of any bird. Just as Polar Bear - Spy on the Ice changed the way we look at an iconic subject, the spy cameras give the emperor penguin's amazing story a fresh perspective. The Humboldt penguin lives in the hot desert regions of South America and its problems have more to do with heat than cold. The rock hopper is one of the more comical penguins nesting on cliffs in the Falklands islands, braving incredibly rough oceans to reach the shore. The trials and tribulations of these other penguins crosscut the narrative of the emperor penguin, highlighting the differences at the same stage in their lives. When the emperors huddle together to protect themselves against minus 60degree temperatures, Humboldt penguins are tolerating plus 40degrees in the driest desert on Earth! While emperors are negotiating huge snowdrifts, rock hoppers are trying to jump up vertical cliffs. 50 different spy cams reveal the secret lives of nature's most devoted parents.
