If you?ve got your high definition television set up, and your Blu-ray player or Playstation 3 at the ready, then surely home cinema demo material rarely comes in better shape than Independence Day. The spectacular 1996 blockbuster stars Will Smith in the early part of his movie career and, of course, tells the tale of invaders from other worlds bringing mighty ships to the Earth. And particularly in the first half, Independence Day wrings so much tension and style from their arrival that few films have equalled it since. The sheer spectacle of set pieces such as the blowing up of the White House, or the massive battle in the skies, simply deserves to be seen and enjoyed in high definition. Independence Day, of course, does go a bit daft as it goes about wrapping up its simple-yet-compelling premise, but it?s really very hard not to forgive it. So ambitious were the effects at the time that they still stand up now, and as far as science fiction blockbusters go, this remains one of the finest in recent memory. Of course, high definition does it wonders. The film looks razor-sharp, and coupled with a punchy sound mix, Independence Day is quite superb demo material. That it?s also a fun blockbuster too is an added, and very welcome treat. --Jon Foster

  • Repo Man [Masters of Cinema] [Blu-ray] Repo Man | Blu Ray | (20/02/2012) from £10.22  |  Saving you £4.77 (31.80%)  |  RRP £14.99

Arguably the defining cult film of the Reagan era, the feature debut of Alex Cox (Sid & Nancy, Walker, Straight to Hell) is a genre-busting mash-up of atomic-age science fiction, post-punk anarchism, and conspiracy paranoia, all shot through with heavy doses of deadpan humour and offbeat philosophy. After quitting his dead-end supermarket job, young punk Otto (Emilio Estevez) is initiated as a repo man after a chance encounter with automobile repossessor Bud (Harry Dean Stanton). An illicit, high-voltage life follows, including an adrenalised search for a mysterious '64 Chevy Malibu loaded with radioactive - and extragalactic - cargo...With an iconic soundtrack (Iggy Pop, Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies), stunning Robby Mller cinematography, and iconoclastic direction, Repo Man remains one of the great debuts of the 1980s.

  • District 9 [Blu-ray] [2009] District 9 | Blu Ray | (28/12/2009) from £4.79  |  Saving you £20.20 (80.80%)  |  RRP £24.99

Producer Peter Jackson ('Lord Of The Rings') presents this action-packed instant sci-fi classic. Rich with social and political themes District 9 is also a spectacular effects-driven event picture offering clear evidence that blockbuster movies can have a brain to go along with the brawn! 1982 Johannesburg South Africa: A large alien spaceship hovers above the city carrying hundreds of thousands of ailing extraterrestrial creatures that the population of the 'Joburg' would soon come to unaffectionately refer to as 'Prawns'. Twenty-eight years later and tensions are mounting. The 'Prawns' live in a militarized ghetto zone called District 9 where they are confined in squalor. Munitions company Multi-National United is contracted to remove the extraterrestrial element with force to a distant compound. Unexpectedly bureaucrat Wikus van der Merwe supervises the military charge. However when Wikus discovers an unknown substance and accidentally ingests it he soon becomes the most hunted man in Johannesburg. Alone and stripped of his former life Wikus' only allies are the creatures he once sought to banish. Play.com Review Taking elements from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind David Croneburg's The Fly and cult eighties hit Alien Nation District 9 is an expansion of director Neill Blomkamp's 2005 short film Alive In Joburg. Filmed in a gritty handheld documentary style the movie thrusts viewers right into the heat of the action capturing the full force of mounting tensions between the otherworldly immigrants and the bitter locals. Throw in some scathing social satire remarkable - and sometimes grotesque - special effects (on a comparatively low budget) and some Hollywood-beating action scenes and you've got a movie that ticks all the boxes. As for the cast Sharlto Copley - soon to be seen as Captain 'Howling Mad' Murdock in the A-Team Movie - is a revelation as Wikus; mixing pathos naivet'' and desperation to remarkable effect. And that's not forgetting the alien creatures themselves: veering from super strong insatiable scavengers to thoughtful and intelligent freedom fighters these CGI creations hold up remarkably well and 'Christopher' one of Wikus' only allies is a wholly sympathetic and likeable character in stark contrast to the majority of the nefarious individuals who prowl the slums in search of Wikus. District 9 comes at a time when juggernauts such as Avatar Terminator Salvation Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen are on the scene and it easily holds its own against the competition. More cerebral and exciting than the average sci-fi action flick we urge you to take a trip to District 9 and experience one of the most exciting and original movies of the decade.

  • Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun [Blu-ray] Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun | Blu Ray | (20/02/2017) from £7.87  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

There's a sense of awe to the special effects work of animation specialists Gerry and Sylvia Anderson (Thunderbirds Are Go)--the slow, lovingly detailed introduction of a massive spaceship creeping out of dock and struggling against its bulk while trapped on the ground, and the almost balletic spectacle of the ship elegantly floating against an impressive star field or dramatically flying against the rugged landscape. These moments are the highlights of this sober science fiction thriller about the discovery of a planet on the far side of the sun in Earth's orbit. A mission is hastily put together, with British astrophysicist Ian Hendry teamed with hotshot American astronaut Roy Thinnes for the three-week trip, but when they suddenly crash-land the strange creatures that surround them are revealed to be human. Against all rational explanations they're back on Earth, but Thinnes suddenly discovers that everything is a mirror image of his existence: Through the Looking Glass by way of The Twilight Zone. Though it begins as a paranoid spy thriller set in the near future (the opening details an ingenious espionage caper featuring a very special eyepiece), it quickly turns into a serious and oddly unsettling space-race drama with a heady twist. Robert Parrish's direction is unusually aloof, but the film is always intriguing and well acted with gorgeous special effects that may rank second only to Stanley Kubrick's 2001 as the most elegant vision of outer space flight on film. --Sean Axmaker
