One of Hollywood's most iconic westerns Howard Hawks' Red River launches cinema's grandest cattle drive and one of the screen's most powerful father-son dramas. Wyatt Earp has long fascinated filmmakers. Actors from Burt Lancaster and James Stewart to Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner have played the legendary gunfighter but no portrayal is more definitive that Henry Fonda’s in My Darling Clementine. John Ford’s first Western since his seminal Stagecoach My Darling Clementine ranks among the director’s finest. Telling the story of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the friendship between Earp and Doc Holliday Ford renders this famous tale into a lyrical masterpiece filmed in his beloved Monument Valley and full of iconic moments. This limited edition contains two versions of the Western classic – the version that premiered in cinemas in December 1946 and the longer ‘pre-release’ cut that had played to preview audiences earlier that year – as well as another Wyatt Earp movie from 20th Century Fox Allan Dwan’s Frontier Marshal starring Randolph Scott and Cesar Romero. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly - Limited Edition Steelbook | Blu Ray | (26/05/2014)
from £22.45 | Saving you £-0.46 (-2.10%) | RRP
This two-disc Special Edition presents the restored, extended English-language version of Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, now clocking in at almost three hours (actually 171 minutes on this Region 2 DVD as a result of the faster frames-per-second ratio of the PAL format). It includes some 14 minutes of previously cut scenes, with both Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach returning to the editing suite in 2003 to add their voices to scenes that had never before been dubbed into English (Wallach's voice is noticeably that of a much older man in these additional sequences). The extra material contains nothing of vital importance, but it's good to have the movie returned to pretty much the way Leone originally wanted it. The anamorphic widescreen picture is now also accompanied by a handsome Dolby 5.1 soundtrack, making this the most complete and satisfactory version so far released. Film historian Richard Schickel provides an authoritative and engaging commentary on Disc 1. On the second disc there are featurettes on Leone's West (20 mins), The Leone Style (24 mins), Reconstructing The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (11 mins) and a documentary about the historical background of the Sibley campaign, The Man Who Lost the Civil War (15 mins). In addition, there's a two-part appreciation of composer Ennio Morricone, Il Maestro, by film-music expert John Burlinghame. Tuco's extended torture scene can be found here, along with a reconstruction of the fragmentary "Socorro Sequence". In short, exemplary bonus features that will satisfy every Leone aficionado. --Mark Walker

Hidden Kingdoms 3D is a groundbreaking 3D special made in conjunction with the much-anticipated BBC 1 series - billed as 'Pixar meets Life'. Using the immersive power of 3D audiences will be transported into magical worlds and experience the titanic battles our two mini-superheroes - a chipmunk and grasshopper mouse - face just to survive. Our characters may be separated across the North American continent but they're united by the challenges associated with diminutive size. Their contrasting tales will be tightly interwoven into one engaging and entertaining narrative playing out over the course of an extraordinary day - a day packed with dramatic highs and lows. Our heroes may be small but they're also deadly and able to pack a punch well above their weight. The challenges that each creature faces almost defy belief. A sudden rainstorm releases raging torrents that can wash away the grasshopper mouse's home in seconds; to a bug a falling acorn is as catastrophic as a crashing meteorite! This is a world where dirt stings like gravel and a sudden gust of wind feels like a tornado. Time has a whole different meaning too in these Hidden Kingdoms. Here a minute can play out like an hour and every second counts. It's a pressure cooker environment where creatures live their lives in fast forward - it's drama on a different scale! Of course our heroes don't live in isolation they share the Hidden Kingdom with a rich and colourful supporting cast of mini life forms that will astound and delight audiences with their beauty and bizarre natural behaviour. It's 'Mini meets Mighty' as our tiny heroes face huge adversity from large animals that live in a dimension beyond their miniature world yet unknowingly have a huge influence upon it; threatening our heroes' lives as they go about their own. We will be 'turning up the dials' in all senses - amplifying these magical hidden realms through amazing images and specialist sound design to create heightened realities. Unusual filming angles and unexpected perspectives will allow us to enter small corners of these worlds that we've never seen before. The revelations of these mini realms will be even further enhanced in a 3D experience taking fascinating factual content and distinctive filming approaches to a whole new level. The challenges our heroes face are always exceptional; their solutions always surprising but as dawns breaks on what will become the biggest day of their lives are the heroes of the Hidden Kingdom ready?
