  • Fantastic Four - Rise Of The Silver Surfer [Blu-ray] [2007] Fantastic Four - Rise Of The Silver Surfer | Blu Ray | (08/10/2007) from £2.75  |  Saving you £11.40 (57.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Offering a real improvement on its predecessor and successfully introducing one of the world of comics' most popular characters in the process, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer easily warrants some attention on DVD to go with its impressive box office take. Picking up where the surprisingly tepid original left off, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer finds the Marvel Comics Universe's first family dealing with the celebrity that their powers have brought them, to the point where even a simple wedding can't take place without interruption. The film then takes a little while to re-establish its characters and re-introduce some of the issues that underpin them. But it's not too long before the Silver Surfer arrives, and things really get into gear. For make no mistake: it's the Surfer who ignites the film and provides some of the very best moments of Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer. Backed up by some superb special effects work, he's a far more interesting draw that the returning Julian McMahon as Dr Doom. While there are, inevitably, various problems that each of the characters in Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer must face, the film never opts to go knee-deep into them. Instead, it chooses a light, breezy tone, that's suited well to family viewing yet not without some genuine blockbuster moments. It's no classic, but Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer is most certainly fun. And it's equally certain that this isn't the last we've seen of this quintet of heroes... --Jon Foster

  • Monte Carlo [Blu-ray] Monte Carlo | Blu Ray | (12/03/2012) from £6.09  |  Saving you £13.90 (69.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

A graduation trip to Paris and a case of mistaken identity coincide to give three Texan girls an overseas adventure they'll never forget. Friends Grace (Selena Gomez) and Emma (Katie Cassidy) are going on a trip to Paris to celebrate Grace's graduation, but find themselves saddled with Emma's soon-to-be stepsister Meg (Leighton Meester), who's just about as different from Emma and Grace as is humanly possible. The trip starts out rushed and much less glamorous than the girls anticipated, but when Grace is mistaken for British heiress Cordelia Winthrop Scott, the girls suddenly find themselves in the lap of luxury and wind up at a charity event in Monte Carlo. Along the way, each of the girls meets a boy who helps them to mature and discover what's truly important in their lives. This movie has essentially been done before (think The Lizzie McGuire Movie and Cheetah Girls 2), and even with the star power of Gomez, this rendition pales in comparison. Throw in the unlikely pairing of Cassidy and Gomez as friends and contemporaries despite their significant age difference, and the abrupt personality switch that Meester's character undergoes, and the whole film comes off as pretty unbelievable to those over 12-years-old. However, tweens are likely to find the characters and situation enticing enough, especially when combined with the draw of Disney Channel icon Gomez, to earn the film a passing score. (Ages 10 to 12) --Tami Horiuchi

A scathing comedy satire of fashionistas and cut-throat corporate excess boasting a grandstanding central turn by Meryl Streep as the ultimate boss from Hell The Devil Wears Prada is based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger who once worked as an assistant to real-life Vogue editor Anna Wintour. In the dizzying world of New York fashion where size zero is the new 2 six is the new 8 and a bad hair day can end a career Runaway magazine is the Holy Grail. Overseen with a finely manicured fist by Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) - the most powerful woman in fashion - Runway is a fearsome gauntlet for anyone who wants to make it in the industry. To make Runway the fashion bible of New York and therefore the world Miranda has let nothing stand in her way - including a long line of assistants that didn't make the cut. It's a job no self-respecting person can survive yet it's an opportunity a million young women in New York would kill for. A stint as Miranda's assistant could blast-open the doors for recent college graduate Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway). More college drab than haute couture she stands alone among the small army of 'Clackers' on staff at Runway - superslim fashion divas clacking their stilettos down the halls of the magazine's Manhattan headquarters. But when Andy comes in for the job it dawns on her that making it in this industry will take more than drive and determination. And her ultimate test stands before her in head-to-toe Prada. Miranda can spin the fashion world like a basketball but has a devil of a time finding and keeping a good assistant. Andy is completely wrong for the job. But she has something the rest of them don't: she refuses to fail. To become the perfect assistant Andy will need to make herself over in Miranda's image. Soon much to her boyfriend's dismay she can talk the talk walk the walk and never again confuse Dolce with Gabbana. But the more of life she sees through Miranda's eyes the more she begins to grasp that Miranda's world is a fabulous but lonely one - and that sometimes great success depends on great sacrifice. But at what cost?

  • The Karate Kid [Blu-ray] [2010] The Karate Kid | Blu Ray | (19/09/2011) from £4.99  |  Saving you £9.51 (59.50%)  |  RRP £15.99

A remake of the 1984 film of the same name, The Karate Kid well exceeds expectations, delivering a powerful viewing experience filled with action-packed martial arts scenes, great footage of China and its many wonders, and an absorbing story of a preadolescent boy's struggle to find his own inner strength. The title Karate Kid is really a misnomer as it is the art of kung fu that is practiced in this remake, not karate, and other details, including the film's setting in China, also differ from the original film. What remains the same, and just as powerful, is the underlying story: a young boy moves to a new place where he feels isolated and is bullied by his peers. Through an unlikely relationship with an adult, the boy not only learns to protect himself through martial arts, but develops the much more important qualities of respect and the mastery of one's own mind and body. Relative newcomer Jaden Smith (son of actors and producers Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith) is excellent as the main character Dre Parker; Jackie Chan gives a restrained and highly effective performance as his mentor Mr. Han; and Zhenwei Wang is eerily believable as the bully Chen. This is an intense and often violent film that fully engulfs its viewers--be prepared to gasp and cheer out loud, and know that you may never look at the act of putting on and taking off a jacket in the same way again.--Tami Horiuchi
