  • The Chase (Dual Format Limited Edition) [Blu-ray] The Chase (Dual Format Limited Edition) | Blu Ray | (25/09/2017) from £14.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

An almost absurdly star-studded cast brings to life Horton Foote's story of prejudice, violence, and frustrated love in The Chase. When Bubber Reeves (Robert Redford) escapes from prison, a drunken party in his hometown turns into a vigilante mob. The news disrupts the birthday celebration of a local oil tycoon (E.G. Marshall), whose son (James Fox) is having an affair with Reeves's wife Anna (Jane Fonda). Meanwhile, a bank vice-president (Robert Duvall) knows his wife (Janice Rule) is cheating on him but can't do anything about it except spread a little misery. The sheriff (Marlon Brando) struggles to hold things together until he can persuade Reeves to give himself up. The accents are thick and the emotions seem overwrought at first, but director Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde , Little Big Man) weaves the multiple storylines together into an unsettling finale. Also featuring Angie Dickinson and Miriam Hopkins. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

  • Pokemon: The First Movie [Blu-ray] Pokemon: The First Movie | Blu Ray | (02/10/2017) from £6.48  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

The world domination of Pokémon begets their first theatrical movie. This adventure is a little more complex and dark than the popular TV series, but kids who live for the show will gobble up this film and ask for seconds. Those baffled by the show's popularity, however, will see nothing better here. Mewtwo, a new type of Pokémon designed by scientists to be the ultimate fighter, decides he wants to rule the world and challenges all the great Pokémasters to battle. Of course, our intrepid heroes Ash, Misty and Brock are there to tangle with Mewtwo and spoil his devilish schemes. The film is a tad more emotional than the show (that is, there is some emotion), with Ash sacrificing himself to defend his beloved Pikachu. Would you really expect the makers of this worldwide phenomenon to radically change its winning formula? The feature is only 55-minutes long, but there's also a 20-minute short, "Pikachu's Vacation." For the Pokémon novice, this escapade will truly baffle: the narrated tale has virtually no dialogue except Pokémon speaking their names (Bulbasaur, for instance, will only express emotion by using variations of his name: "Bulba, Bulba-SAUR!"). --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  • The Untamed [Blu-ray] The Untamed | Blu Ray | (09/10/2017) from £13.30  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Celebrated filmmaker Amat Escalante follows up his critically lauded features Heli and Los Bastardos with the award-winning The Untamed, which critics have called ferociously intelligent (Jonathan Romney, Screen) and brilliant, frightening (Rory O'Connor, The Film Stage). Alejandra is a housewife, raising two boys with husband Angel in a small city. Her brother Fabian works as a nurse in a local hospital. Their provincial lives are upset with the arrival of the mysterious Veronica. Sex and love can be fragile in certain regions where strong family values, hypocrisy, homophobia, and male chauvinism exist. Veronica convinces them that in the nearby woods, inside an isolated cabin, dwells something not of this world that could be the answer to all of their problems. Something whose force they cannot resist and with whom they must make peace or suffer its wrath. Escalante's film mixes Lovecraftian science fiction with social commentary as he tackles themes including corruption and social injustice, with a dose of inspiration from Zulawski's Possession, producing a mix that has won acclaim including the Silver Lion at the prestigious Venice Film Festival and Best Director at Austin's Fantastic Fest. With dizzying cinematic tricks and astonishing performances, Francis Coppola's 1992 version of the oft-filmed Dracula story is one of the most exuberant, extravagant films of the 1990s. Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder, as the Count and Mina Murray, are quite a pair of star-crossed lovers. She's betrothed to another man; he can't kick the habit of feeding off the living. Anthony Hopkins plays Van Helsing, the vampire slayer, with tongue firmly in cheek. Tom Waits is great fun as Renfield, the hapless slave of Dracula who craves the blood of insects and cats. Sadie Frost is a sexy Lucy Westenra. And poor Keanu Reeves, as Jonathan Harker, has the misfortune to be seduced by Dracula's three half-naked wives. There's a little bit of everything in this version of Dracula: gore, high-speed horseback chases, passion and longing.

This winning 1987 epic written and directed by John Boorman (Deliverance, The General) serves as a picaresque and semi-autobiographical remembrance of a boy's coming of age during the Second World War. Exhibiting a defiant and humorous take on life during the London blitz, the family of the young boy at the center of the story (Sebastian Rice-Edwards) are a close-knit and resilient bunch, undeterred in the face of the war and revelling in each other's company even as they hide from the incessant bombing. To be sure, there are some poignant moments in this childhood reminiscence, such as when the boy's older sister (Sammi Davis) falls in love with a Canadian, becomes pregnant, and marries him, only to see him taken away by the military police. And the boy's mother (Sarah Miles) serves as a strong influence in the his life as she leads her family through this tumultuous time. The majestic sweep of the film is contrasted with so many comic moments as the people in town go about the mundane details of their daily lives yet also engage in the most absurd rituals in dealing with the onslaught of German artillery - from taking the air raids for granted to wearing gas masks at school. Boorman doesn't dwell on the horrors of war; instead he celebrates the richness and resilience of the people he remembers so fondly. An adventurous and nostalgic slice of life, Hope and Glory is a superb and memorable film. --Robert Lane

Mermaids take the stage in Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska's horror musical, a cult classic in the making. This genre-defying horror-musical mash-upthe bold debut of Polish director AGNIESZKA SMOCZYNSKA follows a pair of carnivorous mermaid sisters drawn ashore to explore life on land in an alternate 1980s Poland. Their tantalizing siren songs and otherworldly auras make them overnight sensations as nightclub singers in the half-glam, half-decrepit world of Smoczynska's imagining. The director gives fierce teeth to her viscerally sensual, darkly feminist twist on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, in which the girls' bond is tested and their survival threatened after one sister falls for a human. A coming-of-age fairy tale with a catchy synth-fuelled soundtrack, outrageous song-and-dance numbers, and lavishly grimy sets, The Lure explores its themes of emerging female sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with savage energy and originality. • Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased): The Complete Series [Blu-ray] Randall And Hopkirk (Deceased): The Complete Series | Blu Ray | (02/10/2017) from £49.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

The twist of private-eye show Randall & Hopkirk Deceased is that in the first episode, gumshoe Marty Hopkirk (Kenneth Cope) is killed off by the villains, only to pop up in an immaculate white suit as a ghost visible only to his hardboiled partner Jeff Randall (Mike Pratt). In theory, the supernatural streak--which meant a complex set of rules about Marty's appearances and effects on the physical world--should lead the show into wilder territory, but most episodes squander the team's unique abilities on ordinary cases about blackmail and murder-for-profit. A persistent subplot has the living Jeff getting cosy with the dead Marty's widow Jean (Annette Andre) to the discomfort of her late husband. The elementary effects and the nice underplaying of the leads have a certain period charm, and the show could afford a high calibre of special guest villains and dolly birds. A 1990s remake with Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer hasn't obliterated memories of the original. --Kim Newman
