  • Woody Allen: Six Films - 1979-1985 [Blu-ray] Woody Allen: Six Films - 1979-1985 | Blu Ray | (12/12/2016) from £43.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

Arrow Academy's second Woody Allen collection covers 1979-85, during which he made many of his best-loved films. These begin with Manhattan, a sublime Gershwin-scored Panavision love-letter to his home city, and end with The Purple Rose of Cairo, a wistfully affectionate romance about the cinema's past that also doubles as a hilariously fantastical farce. In between there's the Felliniesque, fascinatingly self-analytical Stardust Memories; the bucolic romp A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (the first of thirteen films starring Mia Farrow); the technically and conceptually astonishing Zelig, in which a human chameleon bears witness to many of the 1920s and 30s cultural and political upheavals; and the perfectly-formed Broadway Danny Rose, a comedy about a theatrical agent who gets mixed up with the Mob. By now, Allen was working with a tightly-knit regular team: cinematographer Gordon Willis, designer Mel Bourne, editor Susan E. Morse and producer Robert Greenhut worked on nearly all of these, achieving an enviable consistency of style at a time when American cinema was moving away from the notion of the auteur director. Collection includes: ¢ Manhattan (1979) ¢ Stardust Memories (1980) ¢ A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982) ¢ Zelig (1983) ¢ Broadway Danny Rose (1984) ¢ The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) ¢ Exclusive to this collection: Manhattan and a hardback book featuring new and archive writing on all the films.

  • Family Values: Three Films by Hirokazu Kore-eda [Blu-ray] Family Values: Three Films by Hirokazu Kore-eda | Blu Ray | (29/01/2018) from £32.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

One of Japan's most internationally celebrated filmmakers working today, Hirokazu Kore-eda is feted by critics and audiences alike. His films often focus on family dynamics and recall the films of masters Yasujiro Ozu and Mikio Naruse. Collected here in a limited edition box set are some of his finest works. I Wish tells the story of a family literally separated as elder brother Koichi lives with his mother and grandparents, whilst younger Ryu lives with his deadbeat father. The boys hear a rumour that when two trains on the near completed Kyushu line pass each other a miracle will be granted and they hatch a plan to meet and bring their family back together. Like Father, Like Son finds two families in turmoil as they discover their six year old sons were swapped and they have been raising children who are not biologically their own. Worlds apart in many ways they question their roles and nature vs nurture. After the Storm once again focuses on a separated family; the father, Ryota, a struggling writer clutching at past glory is trying to reconnect with his family following the death of his father, causing him to evaluate his relationship with his son and his own role as a father. Featuring perfectly measured screenplays and astonishing, naturalistic performances, Kore-eda's films are moving portraits of family life that superbly demonstrate the fragility and profundity of familial bonds.
