  • Red Lights [Blu-ray] Red Lights | Blu Ray | (22/10/2012) from £4.57  |  Saving you £10.42 (69.50%)  |  RRP £14.99

Call them professional skeptics: well-known academic ghostbuster Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her very focused assistant Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) travel around to alleged instances of paranormal activity, the better to debunk such hugger-mugger. A rather large challenge arrives in the form of a long-retired psychic, one Simon Silver (Robert De Niro), a legendary (and quite blind) reader of minds and bender of spoons. This showdown between the forces of rationality and the specter of X-Files-level phenomena gets off to a promising start, as writer-director Rodrigo Cortés stages a few nifty sequences of the debunkers at work. Also nice to see the perpetually haunted Murphy in a lead role, and Weaver's pretty commanding without doing anything fussy. It's therefore a shame that logic flies out the window at a certain point in the storyline (this is a movie with far too many "In that case, why didn't they just do this?" moments), and that the overall approach becomes pointlessly frantic. Cortés did rather nicely with the restrictions of his 2010 feature Buried, which was set entirely in a coffin, but the larger playing field seems to be a greater challenge--and the ending seems a little overdesigned to foment a thousand online arguments. Final sin: wasting Elizabeth Olsen in a completely decorative role. --Robert Horton

  • No Country For Old Men [Blu-ray] [2007] No Country For Old Men | Blu Ray | (08/09/2008) from £6.00  |  Saving you £18.99 (76.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

The Academy Award winning adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's violent poetic and darkly funny crime novel No Country For Old Men sees The Coen Brothers produce their finest thriller to date. Set amongst the wild empty and imposing landscape of 1980s Texas No Country For Old Men is a masterly tale of the good the deranged and the outright doomed. Approaching retirement Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is one of the last links to the history of Texas' Old West and the men who patrolled the frontiers of decency and lawlessness. These days though he feels less and less able to comprehend the new breed of violent criminals that have drifted into his jurisdiction. Violent men like Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem): an enigmatic psychopathic and obsessively compulsive killer who determines the fate of his victims with a quick flip of a coin. Chigurh an ex-special-forces operative turned hit man has been hired to track down two million dollars in cash taken from the scene of a drug-deal gone awry and whoever spirited it away. That man is Llewellyn Moss (Josh Brolin): a financially struggling hardened Vietnam veteran who stumbled upon the money and a substantial amount of heroin amongst a sea of bloody corpses and a bullet-strewn truck whilst hunting antelope in the desert near the Mexican border. McCarthy's melancholic and muscular prose is a perfect match for the Coen brothers' unique brand of poker-faced irony. The narrative ellipses entwine with the Coens' modern noir nonchalance and dark humour to highlight and explore the similarities and differences of Moss Chigurh and Bell as they try to track one another down. With dark intelligence and an unstoppable array of sly wit No Country For Old Men is reminiscent of Joel and Ethan Coen's early neo-noir motion picture Blood Simple and their much-lauded Academy Award winning Fargo and is a cat-and-mouse chase epic that engages and excites from beginning to end.

  • Serenity (Blu-Ray) Serenity (Blu-Ray) | Blu Ray | (05/01/2009) from £6.10  |  Saving you £13.89 (69.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Can't stop the signal... Beloved television cult director Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer Angel) makes a spectacular first foray onto the big screen with Serenity the cinematic adaptation of his wildly popular but short-lived sci-fi series Firefly. A mix of space western comedy and drama Serenity follows captain Malcolm Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his ragtag crew as they trade their way around the edges of civilized society. Of particular interest are two passengers they take on Simon and River Tam (Sean Maher and Summer Glau) a brother and his telepathic sister on the run from the corrupt governing Alliance. As notorious former members of the anti-Alliance opposition Mal and his crew make it difficult for Simon and River to stay hidden. Everything goes completely awry when a government assassin is sent to retrieve River. As Mal is forced to choose between his close-knit crew and the brother and sister newcomers it becomes apparent that River harbors both a dangerous secret and astounding fighting powers and Mal decides that discovering the truth about what she knows might just be worth his time. Many of the film's action sequences revolve around Summer Glau's martial arts skills in her portrayal of River. Glau prepared for her role with Hong Kong stuntwoman Ming Lu as well as stunt coordinators Chad Stahelski and Hiro Koda and as a result performed nearly all the stuntwork herself. In addition to the stellar stunts realistic graphics and an often haunting score the film's actors display a rare chemistry that brings viewers both into their lives and into a possible version of humanity's future.
