Reinventing Star Trek was always going to be controversial but Lost's J.J. Abrams has pulled it off with style creating a bold vision that is faithful without being slavish. The young cast step boldly into iconic roles and the action is bigger and more epic than ever before! Director J.J. Abrams (Alias) re-teams with his MI: III screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to bring a new vision of the greatest space adventure of all time. Play.com Review When Paramount announced that J.J. Abrams and Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman would tackle Star Trek few fans doubted that the creator of Lost would deliver but even the most optimistic fan could be forgiven for not expecting it to be this good! We'll get straight to the point: this is the best Enterprise adventure since Wrath Of Khan - and plenty would argue that it's even better. So what's so good about the latest adventure? Let us boldly tell you... Influenced by Spock's appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generations: Season 5's Unification and Star Trek: The Original Series: Season 1's Balance Of Terror where Kirk becomes the first human to encounter a Romulan Abrams' movie is deeply rooted in the lore of the series but some bold decisions reinvigorate the franchise. A sort of re-boot re-imagining and prequel all in one this origins story toys with the space-time continuum effectively creating a parallel universe in which the characters can exist as new versions of their former incarnations freeing the story from the constraints of past movies and TV shows. Depicting the characters in their formative years the cast of relative newcomers are a resounding success. Playing Kirk like a cross between William Shatner's original Tom Cruise's Maverick and Harrison Ford's Han Solo Chris Pine (Smokin' Aces) is charming and hilarious but he's always building to become the iconic hero. Heroes star Zachary Quinto successfully channels Leonard Nimoy (who also appears) as Spock exploring the character's dual heritage. Meanwhile Zoe Saldana captures the strength and sexuality of Nichelle Nichols' original Uhura easily capable of holding her own against the egos onboard the Enterprise. Her romantic leanings might surprise a few old Trek fans too. Elsewhere Karl Urban brilliantly plays Bones Simon Pegg amuses as Scottie Anton Yelchin (Terminator Salvation) adds humour as Chekov John Cho appears as Sulu; and that's not forgetting Eric Bana (Black Hawk Down) as Romulan baddie Nero. The actors are fantastic but it's Abrams' handling of the spectacle that made this movie the highest grossing Star Trek. Never before have we seen such intense action and such gripping set pieces; the opening is one of the most immediate impacting scenes in a blockbuster for many years. Overall fans will love the references and creative decisions whilst newcomers will enjoy the intense action-packed spectacle and accessibility of a world that might have previously seemed inaccessible such is the depth and scale of the Star Trek legacy. Did we mention two sequels are on the way? Wish we could warp speed!

  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Triple Play (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) Rise of the Planet of the Apes - Triple Play (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (12/12/2011) from £4.69  |  Saving you £14.00 (56.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

A galaxy's worth of nihilism buried under a 70s Velveeta topping, The Planet of the Apes series stands today as a dark marvel of pop cinema, a group of wildly variable films that combine to form a giant inescapable kiss-off to the human race. (That said message was able to withstand such distractions as ever-cheapening makeup and Charlton Heston loudly pounding sand makes its achievements even more impressive, really.) Boasting a keen awareness of its predecessors' particular charms and a gem of a central CGI performance by Andy Serkis, Rise of the Planet of the Apes makes for a rather miraculous summer movie: a big-budget special effects extravaganza that also delivers a killer backhand. Sort of redoing 1972's Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, the film follows the events set in motion when a bereaved scientist (James Franco) attempts to create a cure for Alzheimer's, resulting in a supernaturally intelligent chimp named Caesar. The old bit about science tampering in God's domain quickly applies. Director Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist) displays an admirable sense of pacing, deftly levying the escalating action scenes with small character moments from the likes of John Lithgow and Brian Cox. That said, the film belongs to Caesar, whose path from wide-eyed innocent to reluctant revolutionary generates the ironic pulp empathy that gave the original series such a kick. Watching the climactic confrontation on the Golden Gate Bridge, it's distressingly easy to figure out which side to root for. Chuck Heston would no doubt grit his teeth in approval. Note: Those skeptical that this revamp could wholly retain the original's doomy backbeat would do well to stick around during the end credits. --Andrew Wright

In 1974, the most celebrated American R&B acts of the time came together with the most renowned musical groups in Southern Africa for a 12-hour, three-night long concert held in Kinshasa, Zaire. The pipe dream of musician Hugh Masekela and producer Stewart Levine, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with The Rumble in the Jungle, the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, previously chronicled in the Academy Award winning documentary When We Were Kings.Soul Power is a verit documentary, entirely composed of footage shot in 1974 at the legendary music festival (dubbed Zaire '74). It shows the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, Miriam Makeba, among a host of others. At the peak of their talents and the height of their careers, these artists were inspired by this return to their African roots, as well as the enthusiasm of the Zairian audience, to give the performances of their lives. The concert has achieved mythological significance as the definitive Africa(n)-American musical event of the 20th Century.Soul Power has been crafted from the extensive footage which remained after the making of When We Were Kings, which famously documented the epic title fight, but only briefly touched upon the Zaire '74 music festival. This footage has remained vaulted for the past 35 years, unused, unseen, until now. Lensed primarily by celebrated cinematographers Albert Maysles (Gimme Shelter, Grey Gardens), Paul Goldsmith (Rust Never Sleeps), Kevin Keating (Harlan County USA), and Roderick Young (Wattstax), Soul Power finally provides today's audience the opportunity to experience this historic musical event in all of its magnificent, filmed glory, restored with incredible sound quality. An unbridled musical journey for the ages.

But a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon. Two South African fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the existing myths about the artist known as Rodriguez. The devastated landscape of the Louisiana bayou becomes a primordial world in the eyes of 6-year-old Hushpuppy (the fierce and magnetic Quvenzhané Wallis). Hushpuppy's father Wink (Dwight Henry), emotionally unstable and increasingly ill, fights to maintain their ramshackle home, along with the rest of the precarious community of the area known as the Bathtub--but a Katrina-esque storm leaves the Bathtub flooded, driving Wink to desperate lengths. Faced with the loss of everything she knows, Hushpuppy decides her only hope is to find her mother, but her only clue is a winking light in the distance. Beasts of the Southern Wild tells its story entirely from the 6-year-old girl's perspective; the actions and emotions of adults take on a mythic scope, as does the damaged environment in which she lives. The movie is dense and rich, often as obscure and murky as the overgrown bayou itself, sometimes off-putting and enticing at the same time. Wallis, her performance brimming with feral energy and a wounded soul, carries the movie with more star power than most adults could muster. The dialogue is thick with intriguing metaphors and the images resist being easily interpreted into a conventional plot, but the story gradually emerges, rising to a potent end. Viewers who take the time to sink into its mysteries will be rewarded. --Bret Fetzer
