His quiet life as a brilliant researcher working with cutting edge genetic technology conceals a nearly forgotten and painful past. His ex-girlfriend and equally brilliant fellow researcher Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly) has tired of Bruce's cordoned off emotional terrain and resigns herself to remaining an interested onlooker to his quiet life. Which is exactly where Betty finds herself during one of the early trials in Banner's groundbreaking research. Acclaimed Oscar-winning filmmaker Ang Lee turns his masterful eye to adapting the classic Marvel Comics character for the big screen. • Ray [HD DVD] [2004] Ray | HD DVD | (04/06/2007) from £6.00  |  Saving you £0.00 (0.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Jamie Foxx stars in this biopic of legendary soul and R&B singer Ray Charles. Skilfully edited and with a keen eye for period detail the narrative weaves in and out of the past in an interlocking tapestry of the man's rise to fame in the 1950s and '60s. Growing up poor black and blind in the rural south Charles learns under the tutelage of his tough-love mother (Sharon Warren) to turn these handicaps into assets. With this training Ray eventually plays his way into a major deal with Atlantic records and earns icon status as an American legend. Along the way the high cost of fame leads him to engage in abusive relationships manipulative behaviour and struggles with drug and alcohol problems. This is a dynamite film for the music alone (Charles's actual recordings are used in the film) but Foxx's career-benchmark performance transcends Ray's biopic roots turning this into a piercing full-on character study: unflinching sometimes harrowing and ultimately deeply moving. The sheer joy of Charles's music comes alive in Foxx's movements and his character matures convincingly and powerfully. A stellar supporting cast is on hand to back him up every step of the way including Larenz Tate as producer Quincy Jones and Kerry Washington as Ray's long-suffering wife Regina.

An all-new chapter of horror is about to begin... George A. Romero's Land of the Dead is the acclaimed director's long-awaited return to the genre he invented beginning with the seminal Night of the Living Dead followed by Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. In Romero's harrowing newest vision the world (as humankind has known it) is merely a memory. In its place is the never-ending nightmare existence of us-the living-versus them-the walkers. What's left of mankind is cordoned off behind the walls of a fortified city while the walking dead roam the vast wasteland beyond. The few wealthy and powerful try to maintain an illusion of life as it was dwelling high above the city in the exclusive towers of Fiddler's Green the last bastion of the ruling class. On the streets below however the remaining less fortunate of the city's inhabitants eke out a hard-scrabble life seeking what little solace they can in the vices available-gambling flesh trade drugs-anything that offers even a fleeting respite from the hell their lives have become. Both the lofty heights of Fiddler's Green and the demoralizing lows of the city below are lorded over by a handful of ruthless opportunists led by Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) who keeps his hands in everything from real estate to less above-board pursuits. To bring food and other essential supplies to the occupants of the city and to allow the Green's well-to-do to acquire the scarce luxury items to which they were once accustomed a hardened group of mercenaries-headed by Riley (Simon Baker) and his second-in-command Cholo (John Leguizamo)-run retrieval missions outside the city protected by their massive armored vehicle Dead Reckoning. Riley and Cholo like Kaufman are in it for the money which they hope to use for their own escapes- Riley to the North with promises of a world without fences and freedom and Cholo to the luxury of Fiddler's Green far away from the violent life he has known. While Kaufman and his employees concern themselves with commerce life is changing both within and beyond the walls of the city. Unrest and anarchy are on the rise among the city's disenfranchised and outside the army of the dead is changing evolving learning to organize and communicate. When Cholo commandeers Dead Reckoning intent on extorting millions out of Kaufman and his cronies Riley and his ragtag group-including Slack (Asia Argento) and Charlie (Robert Joy)-are called into action to stop Cholo and in the process protect the city and its population from the growing army of evolving zombies storming its weakening perimeter.

Sex. Murder. Mystery. Welcome to the party. Harry Lockhart (Robert Downey Jr.) is basically a decent guy. Sure he's a petty thief who skates through life on a shaky cocktail of dog-eared charm and cockeyed optimism but he wants to do the right thing. He just doesn't know how exactly. Harry's perpetual bad luck takes a turn for the better when he and his partner are doing some after-hours Christmas shopping at a New York City toy store and the security alarm breaks up the party. In making his frantic getaway from the cops Harry inadvertently stumbles into an audition for a Hollywood detective movie and faster than you can say Jack Robinson the producer flies him to Los Angeles for a screen test. Thrust into the cutthroat world of L.A.'s pros cons losers and wannabes Harry is teamed with tough-guy private eye Perry van Shrike (Val Kilmer) AKA Gay Perry to prepare him for his screen test. Gay Perry is ruthless relentlessly tough and - you guessed it - gay. He also has little patience for Harry who tries out his acting skills by passing himself off as a detective. It seems like nothing short of destiny when the thief-trying- to-be-an-actor- impersonating-a-detective crosses paths with Harmony Faith Lane (Michelle Monaghan) an aspiring actress who needs his help. Inspired by her hero Jonny Gossamer a fictitious hard-boiled private eye featured in a series of pulp detective novels Harmony moved to Hollywood to pursue her dreams...but a few years and a lot of rejections later she's facing the harsh reality that her best days may be behind her. When the mysterious suicide of Harmony's sister intersects with a seemingly unrelated case that Harry and Gay Perry are investigating they suddenly find themselves embroiled in a real-life murder mystery. Bodies surface and re-surface...long-buried family secrets erupt in present-day mayhem...and what began as a free trip to L.A. may result in Harry's one-way ticket to the city morgue. If he's going to stay alive and become the hero that Harmony needs him to be Harry will have to convince a reluctant Gay Perry to help him solve the case. He'll need to channel Jonny Gossamer's tough-as-nails swagger. And a little dose of luck - or is it fate? - wouldn't hurt either.

  • Ocean's Eleven [HD DVD] Ocean's Eleven | HD DVD | (05/11/2007) from £9.00  |  Saving you £0.00 (0.00%)  |  RRP £25.99

Ocean's Eleven improves on the 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end", and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originally played by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal $163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors and thieves. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. --Jeff Shannon On the DVD: Ocean's Eleven on disc is hardly swarming with special features, but just like all good heists it's quality not quantity that counts. The cast commentary is lively and it's nice to hear intelligent comments coming from Hollywood's big league for a change. However, it's the director and writer's commentary that is the real gem; it's funny, enlightening and most of all it allows Ted Griffin to put the case forward for all screenwriters across the world as to the importance of their craft. The main feature has an impressive transfer of sound and visuals, making the suits sharper and David Holmes' soundtrack even funkier. --Nikki Disney

  • Shrek The Third [HD DVD] [2007] Shrek The Third | HD DVD | (03/12/2007) from £6.50  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £29.99

It's not easy being an ogre, but Shrek finds it doubly difficult for an ogre like himself to fill in for a king when his father-in-law King Harold of Far, Far Away falls ill in this third Shrek movie. Shrek's attempts to fulfill his kingly duties play like a blooper reel, with boat christenings and knighting ceremonies gone terribly wrong, and to say that Shrek (Mike Myers) is insecure about his new role is a gross understatement. When King Harold (John Cleese) passes away, Shrek sets out with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas) to find Arthur (Justin Timberlake), the only heir in line for the throne besides himself. Just as Shrek sets sail to find Artie (as Arthur is more commonly known), Fiona (Cameron Diaz) shocks Shrek with the news that she's pregnant. Soon after, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) sends Captain Hook (Ian McShane) in pursuit of Shrek and imprisons Fiona and her fellow Princesses as part of his plan to install himself as King of Far, Far Away. Shrek finds an awkward Artie jousting with his high school classmate Lancelot (John Krasinski) and, while Artie is certainly no picture of kingliness, Shrek is determined to drag him back to Far, Far Away to assume the throne. Mishaps and comedy abound, including a spell gone wrong that locks Donkey and Puss-in-Boots inside one another's bodies. While Fiona and the other Princesses prove they're anything but helpless women, Artie and Shrek battle their own fears of inadequacy in a struggle to discover their own self-worth. In the end, Shrek, Artie, and Fiona each learn a lot about their individual strengths and what truly makes each of them happy. Of course, it's the pervasive humour and wit that make Shrek 3 so side-splittingly appealing. --Tami Horiuchi
