Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (02/12/2011)
from £6.99 | Saving you £26.00 (78.80%) | RRP
Correctly billed as the beginning of the end, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 kicks off the two-part finale to the massively popular movie franchise, and it does it with some style. It shoots out of the traps, too. It?s established in double-quick time that the evil Lord Voldemort is closing in on his play to kill Harry Potter, and courtesy of a tremendous opening escape sequence, the chase is soon on. This means that Harry, along with Ron and Hermione, spends the film away from the sort-of-safe grounds of Hogwarts, and they?re up against some sizeable dangers. It does all present Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 with a bit of a problem, though. Already having to contend with being the first half of a story that many are craving the ending to, it?s an elongated road movie for long periods, and not always one that?s able to sustain the full sense of menace and excitement. But when it does perform, as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 often does, it?s excellent blockbuster entertainment. There?s a boldness to large sequences of it, too, not least a terrific animated segment, and you get a lot of entertainment for your money, here. And, without question, it looks stunning in high definition. No corners have been cut here at all, and the cinematic quality of the picture and sound is reference standard. It ends with a bit of a sudden application of the brakes rather than a natural lead in to the next film, and it?s too long, certainly. Yet the pentultimate Harry Potter movie keeps the standard high, and most certainly whets the appetite for the final reckoning to come? --Jon Foster

Avatar - Collector's Edition (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD) | Blu Ray | (15/10/2012)
from £12.34 | Saving you £12.65 (50.60%) | RRP
After 12 years of thinking about it (and waiting for movie technology to catch up with his visions), James Cameron followed up his unsinkable Titanic with Avatar, a sci-fi epic meant to trump all previous sci-fi epics. Set in the future on a distant planet, Avatar spins a simple little parable about greedy colonizers (that would be mankind) messing up the lush tribal world of Pandora. A paraplegic Marine named Jake (Sam Worthington) acts through a 9-foot-tall avatar that allows him to roam the planet and pass as one of the Na'vi, the blue-skinned, large-eyed native people who would very much like to live their peaceful lives without the interference of the visitors. Although he's supposed to be gathering intel for the badass general (Stephen Lang) who'd like to lay waste to the planet and its inhabitants, Jake naturally begins to take a liking to the Na'vi, especially the feisty Neytiri (Zoë Saldana, whose entire performance, recorded by Cameron's complicated motion-capture system, exists as a digitally rendered Na'vi). The movie uses state-of-the-art 3D technology to plunge the viewer deep into Cameron's crazy toy box of planetary ecosystems and high-tech machinery. Maybe it's the fact that Cameron seems torn between his two loves--awesome destructive gizmos and flower-power message mongering--that makes Avatar's pursuit of its point ultimately uncertain. That, and the fact that Cameron's dialogue continues to clunk badly. If you're won over by the movie's trippy new world, the characters will be forgivable as broad, useful archetypes rather than standard-issue stereotypes, and you might be able to overlook the unsurprising central plot. (The overextended "take that, Michael Bay" final battle sequences could tax even Cameron enthusiasts, however.) It doesn't measure up to the hype (what could?) yet Avatar frequently hits a giddy delirium all its own. The film itself is our Pandora, a sensation-saturated universe only the movies could create. --Robert Horton

Rise of the Guardians (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray) | Blu Ray | (25/03/2013)
from £9.69 | Saving you £17.30 (64.10%) | RRP
Based on William Joyce's the Guardians of Childhood book series, Rise of the Guardians is a gorgeously animated film about Boogeyman Pitch Black's attempts to spread darkness and fear throughout the world and the guardians' attempts to foil him. Charged with the duty of watching over the children of the world, guardians Sandman, North, Tooth, and E. Aster Bunnymund are loved by children everywhere. When the Man in the Moon appoints Jack Frost to be the newest guardian, the other guardians doubt that Jack can be of much help against Pitch, especially considering that the children don't even believe in Jack Frost's existence. But when Pitch prevents Tooth from collecting the children's teeth, keeps E. Aster Bunnymund from hiding eggs on Easter, and turns the children's happy dreams into nightmares, the guardians realise that they're going to need all the help they can get. The children stop believing in the guardians one by one, and the question that remains is what can one fun-loving, somewhat immature boy with the power to freeze everything he touches possibly do to counteract the fear and darkness enveloping the world? The animation effects are excellent in this film--especially the images of frost and ice spreading across ponds and windowpanes. The characters are interestingly quirky, the action is constant and well paced, and the considerable voice talent includes Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, and Hugh Jackman. A familiarity with the books aids deeper understanding of characters like North and Sandman, but viewers unfamiliar with the books will have no problem enjoying this film. Prometheus - Special Edition (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (08/10/2012)
from £8.99 | Saving you £18.50 (61.70%) | RRP
You want an alien world created anew, with wonders and horrors lurking in its furrows? You go to Ridley Scott, of course, spectacle maker and pictorialist par excellence. So Prometheus is bound to be eye filling, with fully wrought planetary vistas and occasionally jaw-dropping visual coups. And did we use the word alien back there? Yes, folks, Prometheus is a prequel, in a sideways sort of fashion, to Scott's 1979 Alien original--or at least it's a long-distant stage setter for that story. This one begins with a space mission that could reveal the extraterrestrial roots of Earth, although what's buried out on the planet turns out to be much more complicated than expected. In the midst of suspenseful episodes (and a few contrived plot turns), Prometheus reaches for Big Answers to Big Questions, in a grand old sci-fi tradition. This lends the movie a hint of metaphysical energy, even if Scott's reach extends well, well beyond his grasp. The hokier moments are carried off with brio by Michael Fassbender (the robot on board), Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba, and then you've got Noomi Rapace entering the badass hall of fame for a long, oh-no-they-didn't sequence involving radical surgery, which might just induce the vapours in a few viewers. Even if Prometheus has its holes, the sheer size of the thing is exciting to be around. Because this movie is gigantic. --Robert Horton.
