  • Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) [2011][Region Free] Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (02/12/2011) from £6.99  |  Saving you £26.00 (78.80%)  |  RRP £32.99

Correctly billed as the beginning of the end, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 kicks off the two-part finale to the massively popular movie franchise, and it does it with some style. It shoots out of the traps, too. It?s established in double-quick time that the evil Lord Voldemort is closing in on his play to kill Harry Potter, and courtesy of a tremendous opening escape sequence, the chase is soon on. This means that Harry, along with Ron and Hermione, spends the film away from the sort-of-safe grounds of Hogwarts, and they?re up against some sizeable dangers. It does all present Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 with a bit of a problem, though. Already having to contend with being the first half of a story that many are craving the ending to, it?s an elongated road movie for long periods, and not always one that?s able to sustain the full sense of menace and excitement. But when it does perform, as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 often does, it?s excellent blockbuster entertainment. There?s a boldness to large sequences of it, too, not least a terrific animated segment, and you get a lot of entertainment for your money, here. And, without question, it looks stunning in high definition. No corners have been cut here at all, and the cinematic quality of the picture and sound is reference standard. It ends with a bit of a sudden application of the brakes rather than a natural lead in to the next film, and it?s too long, certainly. Yet the pentultimate Harry Potter movie keeps the standard high, and most certainly whets the appetite for the final reckoning to come? --Jon Foster

  • Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy)[Region Free] Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (11/02/2013) from £5.16  |  Saving you £21.83 (80.90%)  |  RRP £26.99

Madagascar 3 is the funny, action-filled third instalment in the popular animated Madagascar franchise. The film opens with the penguins and lemur King Julien XIII flying off in a monkey-powered plane to visit the casinos of Monte Carlo, leaving Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman back in Africa awaiting their return. When the penguins don't come back, the lion, zebra, hippo, and giraffe go after them and descend on the casino in their typically bumbling fashion. Silliness and comedy abound, but the plot drags a bit through this section of the film until the introduction of Captain DuBois, an animal control officer with some serious tracking skills and an obsession with acquiring a lion head for her wall. The story and action really begin in earnest when Alex, Marty, Gloria, and Melman join up with a travelling circus in an attempt to elude DuBois. The sense of conflict, humour on both kid and adult levels, and suspense is fantastic as the foursome go to great lengths to impress the veteran circus animals and improve the struggling circus's show to win a coveted American tour contract. Each of the animals learns some important lessons about taking risks, believing in oneself, and finding and pursuing one's passion along the journey. But when it looks like the group's dream of returning to the New York Zoo may finally be within grasp, the quartet discover that they can never truly go back to the way things used to be--and more surprisingly, that perhaps none of them really wants to. • Rise of the Guardians (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray)[Region Free] Rise of the Guardians (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray) | Blu Ray | (25/03/2013) from £9.69  |  Saving you £17.30 (64.10%)  |  RRP £26.99

Based on William Joyce's the Guardians of Childhood book series, Rise of the Guardians is a gorgeously animated film about Boogeyman Pitch Black's attempts to spread darkness and fear throughout the world and the guardians' attempts to foil him. Charged with the duty of watching over the children of the world, guardians Sandman, North, Tooth, and E. Aster Bunnymund are loved by children everywhere. When the Man in the Moon appoints Jack Frost to be the newest guardian, the other guardians doubt that Jack can be of much help against Pitch, especially considering that the children don't even believe in Jack Frost's existence. But when Pitch prevents Tooth from collecting the children's teeth, keeps E. Aster Bunnymund from hiding eggs on Easter, and turns the children's happy dreams into nightmares, the guardians realise that they're going to need all the help they can get. The children stop believing in the guardians one by one, and the question that remains is what can one fun-loving, somewhat immature boy with the power to freeze everything he touches possibly do to counteract the fear and darkness enveloping the world? The animation effects are excellent in this film--especially the images of frost and ice spreading across ponds and windowpanes. The characters are interestingly quirky, the action is constant and well paced, and the considerable voice talent includes Alec Baldwin, Chris Pine, Jude Law, Isla Fisher, and Hugh Jackman. A familiarity with the books aids deeper understanding of characters like North and Sandman, but viewers unfamiliar with the books will have no problem enjoying this film. • Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (10/12/2012) from £7.59  |  Saving you £22.40 (74.70%)  |  RRP £29.99

The revisionist version of natural history offered up in the Ice Age movies gets yet another twist in the fourth instalment, 10 years after Manny the woolly mammoth, Diego the sabre-toothed tiger, Sid the sloth, and Scrat the squirrel made their chilly debut to hot box-office receipts. The lessons of family and loyalty in Continental Drift may seem a little warmed over, but the creatively constructed laughs, amusing voice characterisations, and inventive CGI animation are reason enough to keep the series viable for kids to giggle about and grown-ups to belly laugh over--sometimes for exactly the same reasons. Once again, acorn-addicted Scrat is the cause of some pretty important behind-the-scenes machinations. His dialogue-free antics also serve as a stand-alone subplot that could easily be a very clever short film of its own. This time the weasely rodent's addled obsession with the fruit of the oak is revealed as the cause of the formation of the world's continents as we now know them. He sets the story--and planet Earth--in motion while pursuing a little nut in a hyperactive prologue that causes underground rifts that in turn form the famous shapes of Australia, Africa, North America, and the outline of Italy (which it turns out is shaped like a boot for a very good reason). Above ground this means more global chaos for the herd of animals we've come to know so well. All the familiar voices reprise their wonderful roles as fissures in earth and ice separate Manny (Ray Romano) from his woolly wife Ellie (Queen Latifah) and boy-crazy teenager Peaches (Keke Palmer). With a killer continental shelf bearing down on them, mother and daughter lead the madcap pack of animal characters toward a safe meeting place while Manny, Diego (Denis Leary), Sid (John Leguizamo), and Sid's crazy granny (Wanda Sykes) drift away on an iceberg schooner into a newly vast open ocean. While floating into oblivion, the mismatched pack encounters a band of animal pirates piloting another slab of ship-shaped ice, captained by a crazed baboon named Gutt (Peter Dinklage), who's bent on resentment-based revenge. The motley crew provides a plethora of comic encounters and a new raft of excellent voice actors. Running a close second to Dinklage in ingenious casting is Jennifer Lopez as Shira, a sultry tiger who, don't cha know, ends up on the good ship and falling for Diego in the end. The adventures of both the land- and sea-based creatures are full of clever gags and densely constructed set pieces that may not be quite up to Pixar story standards, but are certainly always on the ball and executed with computer-animation acumen that is astonishingly lifelike for such an unreal-looking world. Scrat's misadventures act as interstitial connectors to the parallel heroes' journey stories until they ultimately intersect in a massively scaled finale. Even after all the melting and refreezing, the Ice Age world is still a hot commodity in the animated-franchise business and remains a good investment despite the constancy of global rifts in entertaining family fare. --Ted Fry

  • Dolphin Tale (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy)[Region Free] Dolphin Tale (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (13/02/2012) from £6.18  |  Saving you £20.81 (77.10%)  |  RRP £26.99

Inspired by a true story, Dolphin Tale is about courage, ingenuity, and never giving up. Sawyer (Nathan Gamble) is a young boy who's struggling with school and doesn't have many friends other than his cousin Kyle (Austin Stowell). When Kyle, a star swimmer, joins the army to earn money for college and is called to active duty, it looks like Sawyer is destined to spend his summer alone tinkering in the garage and attending summer school. Sawyer stumbles upon a dolphin that's been severely injured, becomes fascinated by dolphins, and is suddenly intellectually engaged like never before. In spite of his shyness, he forms a friendship with marine rescue doctor Clay (Harry Connick Jr.) and his daughter Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff) and, more importantly, a special and very powerful bond with the rescued dolphin, who's dubbed Winter. As the newly formed team struggles to save Winter's life and ensure her continued safety, financial concerns, an accident that leaves Kyle crippled for life, and a hurricane all seem to join forces against them. In the end, it is Sawyer's determination, coupled with a little bit of luck and a lot of ingenuity from an army doctor (Morgan Freeman) who specializes in prosthetics, that helps make each member of the team, including Kyle and Winter, whole again. The talented cast does a great job of creating completely believable characters, but Gamble, Zuehlsdorff, Connick, Freeman, Stowell, and of course Winter, who plays herself, all deserve special mention. While the story of an injured animal rescued and rehabilitated has certainly been told before, this film is emotionally powerful and will absolutely captivate children and adults alike.
