'Our World Their World' is a detailed and fascinating educational exploration into the lives of animals that share our planet. As we examine their unique habitats and behaviour we analyse the impact that man has had on the earth's delicate natural system. Animals Of Antarctica Australia and Hawaii In this episode we travel to the bitter cold of Antarctica for an in-depth look at the penguin. It is then a short hop to the warmer climate of Australia to observe the koala wallaby and the remarkable flying fox. We continue our journey to the paradise island of Hawaii with its abundant birdlife. Sharing their habitat with the mongoose and the hawksbill turtle the albatross and honeycreeper are just two of the myriad of birds that call this island home. Animals Of India And Africa We begin episode two by looking squarely into the jaws of a Bengal tiger and her cubs in India. Their daily struggle for survival is compelling viewing. We study the many animals that share their environment including langur monkeys and varieties of antelope and deer. Then it's off to Africa to visit yet another of the big cats the lion. There rainforests waterholes and vast plains provide homes for a multitude of animals including leopards baboons and crocodiles. Animals Of The African Plains Northern Tanzania and the African plains are the background to the third instalment in this series. A herd of roaming elephants and the dust trail of a speeding cheetah are provocative images of Africa and both animals are featured within this DVD. Rhinos various antelope and giraffes coexist in this harsh landscape where predator and prey play a deadly game of survival. This daily routine on the African plains show Mother Nature at her most unforgiving. The Wildlife Of North And South America For the fourth episode we start in the damp humidity of the Amazon rainforest where the various New World monkeys entertain us with their breathtaking stunts of dexterity high above in the leafy canopies. It's then north to the more temperate region of Florida for a meeting with an alligator. We head north once again to find ourselves in the plains of the central United States and experience a run-in with the American badger buffalo and prairie dog. Animals Of North America The fifth and penultimate episode is an all-American affair as we journey through the United States taking in mountains woodlands and the Pacific coast. The Rocky Mountains are home to amongst others the bobcat and the little known pika both are examined in detail. On the Pacific coast we get wet watching the sea otter a particularly friendly and active animal. We then head off to the woodlands and mountains of northwest America for an in-depth look at the racoon and the mountain lion. Wilderness Specialists In the final episode of our series we travel from the mountains of northwest America to the cold of northern Scandinavia putting in a few stops along the way. Land water and air are covered in this programme as we follow the plight of the black bear and mountain goat; wild salmon and river otter; the bald eagle and the snowy owl. We also experience different temperament when we look at the ferocious wolverine and the far more placid lemming.

While watching The Planets, be prepared to fight your way past all kinds of computer animation which makes Walking with Dinosaurs seem like the last word in realism. It seems that no solar or planetary event which ever happened (or which may or may not have happened) is worthy of mention here without recourse to lovingly detailed shots of implausible-looking collisions and explosions. These come complete with sound effects, despite the fact that there is no sound in the vacuum of space, and are enhanced by a range of colours, some of which are visible only to bees. Somehow Patrick Moore's The Sky at Night manages to convey just as much excitement with little more than a couple of diagrams and the presenter's hyperactive enthusiasm. Fortunately, this two-DVD set is redeemed by both its subject matter and its sheer scope, offering all eight 50-minute episodes of the 1999 documentary series covering the history of the solar system and humanity's age-old desire to learn its secrets. Detailed indexing and scene access makes this a convenient reference source too, so amateur astronomers everywhere can finally bin those off-air VHS copies. --Roger Thomas
