To The Devil A Daughter (Doubleplay) | Blu Ray | (29/01/2018)
from £16.25

| RRP Hammer's To the Devil a Daughter was the last film made by the once great studio. Clearly ailing, Hammer again adapted a novel by Dennis Wheatley, the author behind one of their greatest successes, The Devil Rides Out (1967). Unfortunately for the studio, films such as Rosemary's Baby (1968) and The Exorcist (1973) had, in the intervening decade, radically changed horror cinema. With American star Richard Widmark echoing Gregory Peck's role in the far more polished The Omen (1976), the film seemed, rather than setting the pace as Hammer once had, to be very much jumping on the 1970's occult band-wagon. Christopher Lee is the satanic ex-communicated priest whose coven plan to incarnate the ancient demon Ashteroth, while a supernaturally beautiful Nastassja Kinski demonstrates the same willingness to disrobe as in Cat People (1982). Even so, this lacklustre, misogynistic film couldn't compete with Carrie and Suspiria (both also 1976) and Hammer thereafter concentrated on TV productions. Surprisingly, director Peter Sykes' next film, Jesus (1979), as well as being the most seen and internationally distributed film ever (with an audience of over two billion by 2000), is also the most faithful portrayal of Christ yet committed to celluloid. --Gary S. | Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Director Terence Fisher (The Curse of Frankenstein Dracula The Hound of the Baskervilles) transformed the fate of Hammer Pictures with his vibrant and explicit series of gothic horror films which would become the studio’s signature style for nearly two decades. Fisher continued his winning streak for the studio with this tale of scientific debauchery which remains one of Hammer Films finest achievements. Doctor and amateur sculptor Georges Bonnet (Anton Diffring – Circus of Horrors Fahrenheit 451) has discovered a murderous method of maintaining his youth once every ten years he murders a young woman and removes her parathyroid glands to replace his own. But after 104 years he’s run into some problems. His collaborator is now too old to perform the surgical procedure and a detective is on his case. In desperation Bonnet blackmails another surgeon (Christopher Lee) into performing the procedure by threatening the life of Janine Dubois (Hazel Court) a woman who both men desire. With cinematography by Jack Asher (whose Bava-esque use of colours lend the film an almost dreamlike quality) and set-design by Bernard Robinson who could miraculously produce lavish and expensive looking sets on a tight budget Eureka Entertainment is proud to present The Man Who Could Cheat Death available in the UK for the first time on Blu-ray in a special dual-format edition. Features: Exclusively restored 1080p presentation of the film on Blu-ray Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing New video interview with film scholar Jonathan Rigby New video interview with critic & author Kim Newman Limited Edition Collector’s Booklet

Repulsing Indian attacks and battling against the hostile elements, The Duke still finds time for romance with a fellow traveller (Marguerite Churchill). In 'The Comancheros (1961), Wayne stars as Texas Ranger Jake Cutter whose path crosses with that of professional gambler Paul Regret (Stuart Whitman). The two become uneasy bedfellows in their quest to crush a powerful outlaw gang who are selling arms and alcohol to the local Indians. 'North to Alaska' (1960) is a lighthearted Western starring Wayne and Stewart Granger as rough and tumble gold prospectors in Alaska. When Sam McCord (Wayne) and George Pratt (Granger) eventually strike it rich in the gold rush, George sends Sam to Seattle to fetch his fiancee; but Sam falls in love with her. George eventually accepts his loss and sets about finding a new gal, but only seems to find trouble. Thomas (Wayne) comes to their aid. The former enemies find themselves united in their efforts to resist Mexican Emperor Maximillian, and Juarez, the rebel leader. from £N/A

| RRP Baywatch Hawaiian Reunion, like the 11-year television series itself, is a guilty pleasure short on story credibility but long on action, hardbody appeal, and hot passions. The hyperdrive plot finds Mitch Buchannon (David Hasselhoff), presumed dead at the end of season 10, alive and well and in love with a woman named Allison (Alexandra Paul), who bears a spooky resemblance to Mitch's late lover, Stephanie. Wedding plans that include the old Baywatch lifeguard crew (Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Billy Warlock, etc.) are set for Hawaii, but in a Wrath of Khan-like twist, a villain (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) from the old show's second season turns up with an elaborate plan to kidnap and endanger Mitch's guests. The script is shameless, of course, but the outré element is fun to watch, including a subplot in which Mitch's former wife (Gena Lee Nolin)--suspicious of Allison's true motives--gets into a spectacular catfight with her ex's new lady.--Tom Keogh

| RRP After the poor reception given to George Lazenby in Her Majesty's Secret Service, Sean Connery was no doubt lured back to the series with a gadget-stuffed briefcase full of cash (most of which he allegedly gave to charity) for this wry, snappily made seventh instalment in the series. Some of its secret weapons include a smart script, a Las Vegas setting providing plenty of neon reflections on windscreens for a memorable car chase through the Strip, and the comely Jill St. John as Tiffany Case, a diamond cut-above most of the preceding Bond girls. (Apart from Diana Rigg in Her Majesty's Secret Service, that is). Blofeld and his fluffy white cat are on hand to menace 007--it's the Nehru jackets and steely surface-look of this one in particular that the Austin Powers spoofs are sending up. Blofeld's initial cover as a reclusive Howard Hughes-like millionaire points to how the series was catching up with more contemporary figures and issues. Other highlights include two truly ferocious, karate-kicking female assassins and a sizzling moon-buggy chase across the dunes. --Leslie FelperinOn the DVD: The mind boggling possibility of casting Adam West (TV's Batman) as Bond was seriously mooted because the suits at United Artists wanted to Americanise the franchise, th e documentary reveals. Sean Connery was eventually persuaded to return but demanded a record fee to reprise his role, and then donated all the cash to his charitable foundation, the Scottish International Education Trust. The rags to riches story of larger-than-life producer Albert R Broccoli is told in the second documentary. The commentary is another in the series of edited selections from interviews with cast and crew, which are exhaustive in the wealth of detail offered but a little exhausting to sit through. Sundry trailers, radio and TV spots plus a few deleted scenes complete the comprehensive selection. --Mark Walker
