Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel. Set five centuries in the future, it is a show where the mysterious personal pasts of the crew of the tramp spaceship Serenity continually surface. In fact, it's a Western in space where the losers in a Civil War are heading out to a barren frontier. Mal Reynolds is a man embittered by the war, yet whose love of his comrades perpetually dents his cynicism--even in the 14 episodes that exist we see him warm to the bubbly young mechanic Kaylee, the preacher Book, the idealistic doctor Simon, even to the often demented River, Simon's sister, the psychic result of malign experiments. Firefly is also about adult emotional relationships, for example Kaylee's crush on Simon, the happy marriage of Mal's second officer Zoe and the pilot Wash, the disastrous erotic stalemate between Mal and the courtesan Inara. Individual episodes deal with capers going vaguely wrong, or threats narrowly circumvented; character and plot arcs were starting to emerge when the show was cancelled. Fortunately, the spin-off movie Serenity ties up some of the ends; and in the meantime, what there is of Firefly is a show to marvel at, both for its tight writing and ensemble acting, and the idiocy of the executives who cancelled it.

Ren Laloux's mesmerising psychedelic sci-fi animated feature won the Grand Prix at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and is a landmark of European animation. Based on Stefan Wul's novel Oms en srie [Oms by the dozen], Laloux's breathtaking vision was released in France as La Plante sauvage [The Savage Planet]; in the USA as Fantastic Planet; and immediately drew comparisons to Swift's Gulliver's Travels and Planet of the Apes (both the 1968 film and Boule's 1963 novel). Today, the film can be seen to prefigure much of the work of Hayao Miyazaki at Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) due to its palpable political and social concerns, cultivated imagination, and memorable animation techniques. La Plante sauvage tells the story of Oms, human-like creatures, kept as domesticated pets by an alien race of blue giants called Draags. The story takes place on the Draags' planet Ygam, where we follow our narrator, an Om called Terr, from infancy to adulthood. He manages to escape enslavement from a Draag learning device used to educate the savage Oms — and begins to organise an Om revolt. The imagination invested in the surreal creatures, music and sound design, and eerie landscapes, is immense and unforgettable. Widely regarded as an allegorical statement on the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia, Fantastic Planet was five years in the making at Prague's Jiri Trnka Studios. The direction of Ren Laloux, the incredible art of Roland Topor, and Alain Goraguer's brilliant complementary score (much sampled by the hip-hop community) all combine to make La Plante sauvage a mind-searing experience. Special Features: New high-definition master with optional English subtitles Laloux’s five short films Les Dents du singe (1960), Les Temps morts (1964), Les Escargots (1965), Comment Wang-Fo fut sauv (1987), and La Prisonnire (1988) Laloux sauvage (2003) a 27-minute documentary about Laloux The alternate USA dub track for La Plante sauvage The complete soundtrack for La Plante sauvage 56-page colour booklet featuring rare production sketches, an interview with Laloux, and a new essay by Craig Keller

  • Blade Runner: The Final Cut [Blu-ray] Blade Runner: The Final Cut | Blu Ray | (03/12/2007) from £7.89  |  Saving you £0.10 (1.30%)  |  RRP £7.99

Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) prowls the steel-and-microchip jungle of 21st century Los Angeles. He's a blade runner stalking genetically made criminal replicants. His assignment: kill them. Their crime: wanting to be human. The story of Blade Runner is familiar to countless fans. But few have seen it like this. Because this is director Ridley Scott's own vision of his sci-fi classic. This new version omits Deckard's voiceover narration develops in slightly greater detail the romance between Deckard and Rachael (Sean Young) and removes the uplifting finale. The result is a heightened emotional impact: a great film made greater. Most intriguing of all is a newly included unicorn vision that suggests Deckard may be a replicant. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Is Deckard a replicant? As with all things in the future you must discover the answer to find yourself

  • The 100: Season 5 [DVD] [2018] The 100: Season 5 | DVD | (08/10/2018) from £12.99  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

It's been nearly 100 years since Earth was devastated by a nuclear apocalypse, with the only survivors being the inhabitants of 12 international space stations that were in orbit at the time. Three generations later, the survivors number 4,000 -- and resources are running out on their dying Ark (the 12 stations now linked together and repurposed to keep the survivors alive). Capital punishment and population control are the order of the day, as the leaders of the Ark take ruthless steps to ensure their future -- including secretly exiling a group of 100 juvenile prisoners to the Earth's surface to test whether it's habitable. No one has set foot on the planet in nearly a century -- until now. Among the exiles are Clarke, the teenage daughter of the Ark's chief medical officer; Wells, son of the Ark's Chancellor; the resourceful Finn; and brother/sister duo Bellamy and Octavia, whose illegal sibling status has them flaunting the rules. Technologically blind to what's happening on the planet below them, the Ark's leaders -- Clarke's widowed mother, Abby; the Chancellor, Jaha; and Jaha's shadowy second in command, Kane -- are faced with difficult decisions about life, death and the continued existence of the human race. For the 100 on Earth, however, the alien planet they've never known is a mysterious realm that can be magical one moment and lethal the next. With the survival of the human race entirely in their hands, the 100 must find a way to forge a new path on a wildly changed Earth that's primitive, intense and teeming with the unknown.

  • Highlander [Blu-ray] Highlander | Blu Ray | (11/07/2016) from £12.36  |  Saving you £12.50 (50.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

This 1986 fantasy/action thriller has since spawned two sequels, a TV series, numerous comic-book spin-offs, and a loyal (if somewhat oddly obsessive) following of fans. Directed by music-video veteran Russell Mulcahy (which explains the dizzying camera work and soundtrack contributions from Queen), the original theatrical release made a hash of an intriguing story about an "Immortal" from 16th-century Scotland (Christopher Lambert) who time-leaps to modern-day America with his arch-enemy (Clancy Brown) in hot pursuit. It becomes a battle to the death (yes, Immortals can die) and Lambert seeks survival training from an Immortal mentor played by Sean Connery. Highlander is dazzling, energetic and altogether confusing. --Jeff Shannon

  • The Lovely Bones [DVD] [2009] The Lovely Bones | DVD | (28/06/2010) from £5.49  |  Saving you £14.50 (72.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Director Peter Jackson takes a personal, risky leap in his direction of the film version of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel The Lovely Bones. Yet the leap pays off, in emotional depth and riveting visuals that transport the viewer to other worlds--even ones the viewer may not want to visit. The Lovely Bones is lofted by its star-making performance by the young Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), who plays Susie Salmon, the 14-year-old girl who is murdered early in the film, and who narrates the action from her "in-between place" after dying but before going to heaven. Ronan makes Susie as earthy and awkward as any young teen, yet her presence, and her gorgeous pale eyes, remind viewers that she's otherworldly too. The Lovely Bones takes some big departures from the book, as many critics have pointed out, but it works well on its own merits. The drama involves how (even whether) Susie's family will recover after her ghastly murder, and what happens to her killer and the futile-seeming search for justice and closure. The entire cast is stellar, including Mark Wahlberg and Rachel Weisz as Susie's nearly destroyed parents; the composed young New Zealand actress Rose McIver, who plays Susie's younger sister, whom Susie watches grow up to be the young woman that Susie will never get to be; and Susan Sarandon, the boozy, wisecracking grandmother who may or may not be able to help keep the family from splintering into a million pieces. The other true standout is Stanley Tucci, almost unrecognisable as the quiet, creepy neighbour who kills Susie, obsessing over every detail and perhaps having left a whole trail of gruesome murders in his shambling wake. Jackson's deft direction keeps the mourning humans moving along believably, numbly, and gives breathtaking life to the afterlife, in scenes of fantasy and dread that recall his Heavenly Creatures. --A.T.
