Weimar was geographically and culturally the heart of Germany. It was the birthplace of the Weimar Republic the republic established in 1919 to replace Germany's imperial government and was also home to some of the greatest citizens of the German nation. But while for many it was a heaven on Earth for those imprisoned in the nearby Buchenwald Concentration Camp one of the largest in Germany it was a living hell While Weimar may have been famous for illustrious men as Bach Nietzsche and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe the unspeakable cruelty and brutality of Buchenwald would make it infamous. This programme documents the events of Buchenwald 1937-42 where prisoners were savagely punished for the slightest infraction of the rules. Inmates would freeze in -20' temperatures were worked to death and even the guard dogs enjoyed significantly better living conditions. The camp was originally built to house 8 000 inmates but by the end of 1942 numbers had already exceeded 14 000! Never an extermination camp like Auschwitz Buchenwald was a labour camp but it made every aspect of life within its fences a torture where mistreatment by the guards was not only encouraged it was compulsory

  • Evil Cult [DVD]Evil Cult | DVD | (25/10/2010) from £12.13   |  Saving you £-2.14 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

The Evil Cult (aka "Lord of the Wu Tang") is a wildly and wacky supernatural epic in which Jet Li masquerades as Mo-kei, a weakling warrior orphaned as a child when his parents are killed by two evil Jinx warlords. Chased out of the Wu Tang compound by a leader who considers him a liability, Mo-kei (and his female protectress) find themselves trapped in a dark abyss where they stumble upon a "cooking monk" trapped in a massive boulder who holds the secret to a lost form of Shaolin kung fu. They trick him into teaching Mo-kei the secret of his "solar stance". Newly empowered, Mo-kei sets off to find his maternal grandfather, King of the Gold Lion (de facto leader of the Evil Cult), to rally his clan with the Wu Tang in order to defeat the stifling government forces and exact revenge on the terrible Jinxes. Martial Law's Sammo Hung appears as Chang San Fung, Tai Chi Master of the Wu Tang clan (Hung also choreographed the action sequences for this film). Director Wong Jing (who also helmed the God of Gamblers series, Hard Boiled 2, and Return to a Better Tomorrow) just about keeps a handle on the plot and ably directs the stunning action sequences, some of which occur on battlefields swarming with soldiers. On the DVD: the main feature is presented in letterboxed format with original Cantonese dialogue and English subtitles. The print is generally of good quality but afflicted with blemishes and white flecks throughout. The subtitles are clear but their awkward translation and speed of transition serve at times to make an already convoluted plot harder to understand. It's a shame that an option to listen to a dubbed soundtrack wasn't added as the dubbed theatrical trailer (included here) enhances the daffiness of the movie. Other extras include comprehensive cast and crew filmographies and a small selection of stills. --Chris Campion

  • Make Way For Tomorrow [Masters of Cinema] [DVD]Make Way For Tomorrow | DVD | (25/10/2010) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £22.99

Of Make Way For Tomorrow Orson Welles told Peter Bogdanovich: Oh my God that's the saddest movie ever made. Long unavailable for home viewing Leo McCarey's personal favourite among all his films (which included The Awful Truth and An Affair To Remember) is sad yes but it also stands as cathartic affirmation of the dignity of human feeling and in the testament of such achieves a subtle complexity of characterization on par with Renoir Ford and Hawks. Victor Moore and Beulah Bondi two of the great Hollywood character actors appear makeup-aged beyond their actual years to portray the couple whose house the bank has foreclosed upon (the film was set and produced in the midst of the Great Depression) and who are forced subsequently to move into their children's homes in the city. A near-musical restructuring of gratitude and debt ensues once the offspring deem the couple's lodging an imposition: the two are separated then reunited weeks later... as they glide inexorably into an uncertain future. Unrelentingly unsentimental yet maintaining a balance of pathos and levity unseen in not only American studio pictures but most of the rest of world cinema Make Way For Tomorrow exerted a powerful influence on Yasujir'' Ozu's Tokyo Story and several other key entries in the Japanese master's body of work. It is a film profoundly concerned with questions of filial obligation and the way we treat one another as human beings; it is a film that to give Welles the last word could make a stone cry. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Leo McCarey's truly great Make Way For Tomorrow for the first time on Blu-ray anywhere in the world.

Sacred Weeds is a cult series featuring mind-opening footage of rare human experiences. In four carefully monitored experiments volunteers take powerful hallucinogenic and narcotic substances and the viewer sees the dramatic effects in real time. The substances come from plants like the fly agaric mushroom used by the shamans of Siberia and Henbane used by the medieval witches of Northern Europe. Do these plants transport those who take them into another and sacred world or are they more akin to the recreational drugs of the present day. The effect of these 'sacred weeds' is examined using scientific tests from clinical psychology and biochemistry. The scientists conducting the experiments have impeccable academic and medical credentials. Astonishing footage and gripping interview material revealing experiences on the edge of human understanding combined with valid and authoritative scientific research make this a truly remarkable series. Episodes Comprise: 1. The Fly Agaric Mushroom 2. Salvis Divinorum 3. Henbane--The Witches Brew? 4. The Blue Lily - Flower Power?

After years of unspeakable acts and countless unlawful deaths Dachau concentration camp was finally liberated by the Rainbow Division of the US Army on April 29th 1945. The disbelieving and stunned division rescued some 32 000 prisoners and captured close to 300 guards. The sickening sight which confronted the liberating troops brought about heat of the moment revenge attacks on the SS camp guards and other camp workers who were party to the inhumane atrocities perpetrated at Dachau. Historical records of that time cite that between 15 to 30 SS guards were killed in these vigilante reprisals which were perhaps understandable if not acceptable. Dachau now stands as a ghostly reminder and tribute to those who lost their lives.

  • Histories Of The Holocaust - Buchenwald 1942 - 45 [DVD]Histories Of The Holocaust - Buchenwald 1942 - 45 | DVD | (25/10/2010) from £12.13   |  Saving you £-2.14 (-21.40%)   |  RRP £9.99

The juxtaposition of the Weimar Republic the cultural heart of Germany with the cruelty of the Buchenwald concentration camp situated mere miles away would make the region infamous. Herman Pister's instalment as commandant in 1942 only intensified the horrors committed there with the continued growth of the Division of Typhus and Virus Research: the experimentation on inmates in ways to kill more conveniently. More and more prisoners were worked to death in various operations none more hated than the SS Death Railway. Built at the cost of many inmates' lives the railway initially transported goods made at the camp factories. But as the numbers sent to the camps rose Buchenwald became a depot where all the people were sent before being moved to places such as Dachau. The camp even had a VIP wing where French politicians and Italian princesses resided. With its population swollen beyond its limits Buchenwald would have been unmanageable if not for the 'Kapos' inmates who worked as unofficial guards for extra privileges. The struggle for control between the various Kapo groups would make life even more miserable. The atrocities of Buchenwald were discovered with its liberation by US forces in 1945 and the desire for revenge took over as camp personnel were hunted down and made to publicly stand trial for war crimes. After the war the camp's reputation worsened with the conditions in the now Soviet-run prison worse than ever. It was eventually turned into a shrine to Communism's victory over adversity but this Russian propaganda has long since peeled away leaving the realisation of man's inhumanity to man revealed.
