| RRP This prestigious ensemble brings the world of Downton to life with splendour and passion. Set in England in the years leading up to the First World War Downton Abbey tells the story of a complicated community. The house has been home to the Crawley family for many generations but it is also where their servants live and plan and dream and they are as fiercely jealous of their rank as anyone. Some of them are loyal to the family and committed to Downton as a way of life others are moving through on the look out for betterment or love or just adventure. The difference is that they know so many of the secrets of the family while the family know so few of theirs. But for all the passions that rage beneath the surface this is a secure world serene and ordered and at first glance it seems it will last forever. Little do they know family or staff that the clouds of the conflict that will change everything are already gathering over their heads.

Home Alone | Blu Ray | (08/11/2010)
from £9.15
| Saving you £10.84 (118.47%)
| RRP Now and forever a favourite among kids, this 1990 comedy written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club) and directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire) ushered Macaulay Culkin onto the screen as a troubled 8-year-old who doesn't comfortably mesh with his large family. He's forced to grow a little after being accidentally left behind when his folks and siblings fly off to Paris. A good-looking boy, Culkin lights up the screen during several funny sequences, the most famous of which finds him screaming for joy when he realises he's unsupervised in his own house. A bit wooden with dialogue, the then-little star's voice could grate on the nerves (especially in long, wise-child passages of pure bromide), but he unquestionably carries Home Alone. Billie Bird and John Candy show up as two of the interesting strangers Culkin's character meets. Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern are entertainingly cartoonish as thieves, but the ensuing violence once the little hero decides to keep them out of his house is over-the-top. --Tom Keogh

Bellini's I Puritani: Juan Diego Florez / Nino Machaidze / Ildebrando D'Arcangelo / Orchestra e coro del Teatro Comunale di Bologna/ Michele Mariotti | DVD | (08/11/2010)
from £17.06

| RRP In this high-definition film of Bellinis historical bel-canto drama, I Puritani, tenor superstar Juan Diego Flórez is partnered by new young Georgian soprano Nino Machaidze, in her first appearance on Decca DVD. Joining them in a striking new staging by PierAlli at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna is celebrated bass baritone, Ildebrando DArcangelo. The context is Englands Civil War between the Roundheads (the 'Parliamentarians' or 'Puritans' of the title) and the Cavaliers (Royalists). A love triangle between Arturo (a Puritan), Riccardo (a Royalist) and the beautiful Elvira results in a drama of escapes, disguises and captures, during which Elvira loses her reason, before a final pardon restores her senses and unites her with her beloved Arturo. This new production benefits from the use of a new critical addition, with significant added material i.e. all the music that Bellini wrote for the opera. It makes this release, apart from the excellent cast, even more interesting for the opera lover.
The Pathe Collection -The Battle Of Ypres | DVD | (08/11/2010)
from £5.85
| Saving you £14.14 (241.71%)
| RRP Released in its entirety for the first time ever The Battle Of Ypres is the original 1925 British Instructional Films documentary re-enacting key scenes from the notorious Battle Of Ypres in the actual battle trenches. The lengthy campaign was largely a murderous stalemate that perfectly demonstrated the horror and futility of war. A massive 1.7 million soldiers died in the attempt to capture the Belgian town and its environs over the length of a four year campaign. The first second third and fourth battles of Ypres are all covered as are the key positions of Mesen Hill 60 and the Passchendaele Ridge - the scene of prolonged and terrible carnage over a mere 900 metres of land. A follow-up to the best-selling DVD The Battle Of The Somme (1916) as a representation of war The Battle Of Ypres was not without its controversy; it arguably distorted the grimmer realities of conflict - the trenchfoot the maiming and death - into a noble recount of the superiority of the Allies. But even in this light The Battle Of Ypres gives us a unique historical reading of one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the First World War. The original silent documentary has had an all new soundtrack created from digitally enhanced recordings of the period as well as the addition of evocative sound effects.
