Adele Gereth has taken the young, attractive, sensitive and tasteful Fleda Vetch under her wing. Adele is intensely houseproud, particularly of the possessions she has gathered over the years, objects of beauty, paintings and furnishing all of which reside in Poynton, the family home. Adele’s son, Owen, is dangerously close to marrying Mona Brigstock, a woman lacking entirely in class or any respectable sensibility. In young Fleda, Adele sees a potentially more suitable future mistress of the house and inheritor of her life’s work. Mona however, while lacking in character, is far from lacking in backbone. Fleda soon finds herself buffeted by every wind that blows in Poynton, and subject to almost every kind of attention both good and bad. They continued humankind's long march toward civilization and away from more primitive groups like 'The Clan Of The Cave Bear'. Daryl Hannah is Ayla inia richly detailed, beautifully filmed screen version of Jean M. Auel's bestseller. Separated from her Cro-Magnon people by a calamitous earthquake, Ayla lives with a less-developed, male-dominated Neanderthal clan. She's different in appearance, in resourcefulness, in her uncommon defiance of social taboos. And from those differences arise conflicts that underscore the Cro-Magnons' evolutionary ascendancy and the Neanderthals' mysterious disappearance from our world.Adapted from Jean M. Auel's novel and scripted by John Sayles (Director of Lone Star), this is a true cult classic that shouldn't be missed by fans of low-budget cinema the way they used to be made...

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked - Triple Play (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (02/04/2012)
from £12.13
| Saving you £12.86 (106.02%)
| RRP Pop-culture-savvy kids (and their parents) will enjoy Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked as a pleasant, lighthearted getaway with a lot of laughs for the little ones. Jason Lee reprises his role as Dave, the manager of the worldwide musical stars the Chipmunks, Simon (voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler), Theodore (Jesse McCartney), and the eternally mischievous Alvin (Justin Long). The boyz are joined by their girl-group counterparts, the Chippettes: Eleanor (Amy Poehler), Jeanette (Anna Faris), and Brittany (Christina Applegate). The grown-up viewer might wish that some of the personality of the actors playing the chipmunks were allowed some room to run, but since the voices are put through the "chipmunk synthesizer," they all pretty much end up sounding the same. Nonetheless, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked moves along at a brisk pace, with easy chuckles for toddlers and their older siblings, and some in-jokes to keep the parents amused. The plot involves the gang going on a cruise (the first half of the film, in fact, seems like a commercial for Carnival Cruises), but when Alvin is involved, something inevitably goes awry. Soon everyone is marooned on a deserted island and there are adventures and misadventures as they try to be rescued. Along the way, there are references to the Indiana Jones movies, Castaway, Gilligan's Island, and even Lost ("There are 'Others'?"). And of course, it has plenty of chipmunk-singing pop songs--lots of Lady Gaga, for those of you keeping track. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked is a big bag of popcorn of a family film that younger kids especially will love. --A.T. Hurley

| RRP Before HD there was Super 8; before Independent film there was Underground Cinema and in the late 1970's and 80's, downtown Manhattan was the epicentre of a new kind of explosive, raw and confrontational filmmaking that bore witness to the rising East Village art and No Wave music scenes and the birth of hip hop. Filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch, Beth B, Lizzie Borden and Amos Poe captured New York's gritty vibrance with dissonant tales and deadpan humour. Blank City tells their story and succeeds in capturing the glorious and grungy creative energy of another age, illustrated by extraordinary footage of their early work and the derelict landscapes of the Lower East Side. Interviews with Jim Jarmusch, John Waters, Steve Buscemi, Debbie Harry, Fab 5 Freddy, Thurston Moore and Lydia Lunch explore how a group of young visionaries pooled resources to create a DIY film movement that had a major influence on independent film today. | RRP Visions of Ecstasy, a short, experimental art film made in 1989, is the only film ever to have been banned outright in the UK solely on the grounds of blasphemy. Further its depiction and interpretation of the erotic imaginings of the 16th Century Carmelite nun, St. Teresa, were such that the films banning was upheld in an historic judgement at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg in a case that took seven years to reach its conclusion. Now, due to the abolition of the UK's blasphemy laws in 2008, Visions of Ecstasy is finally being released. Included with this historic film is also a 40 page, booklet written by the films director, Nigel Wingrove, in which he explains how the film came to be made, the effect its banning had on his life and future work, and how his continuing battles against film censorship led eventually to the resignation of the BBFC's then director, JamesFerman, the legalisation of pornography and a general relaxations of film classification overall. Also included on this DVD are the director's first erotic short film, Axel (1986) and his nunsploitation feature, Sacred Flesh (2000), in which a Mother Superior struggles with her sexual desires in a series of imagined dialogues with Mary Magdalene will her mind torments her with images of sexual perversion, lesbianism and sadomasochism.
