Touring the Vaudeville circuit in the 1930's they changed their name to the 'Garland Sisters' and Frances changed her name to Judy (influenced by the Hoagy Carmichael song). At the age of 13 she signed a contract with MGM and was eventually paired with Mickey Rooney in the 1937 feature, 'Thoroughbreds Don't Cry', which was so successful they were cast in 'Love Finds Andy Hardy'.
