Collection of animations following the adventures of the DC Comics hero. 'Superman: The Last Son of Krypton', the three-part episode from 'Superman: The Animated Series', recounts the early years of Superman (voice of Tim Daly) from his forced exile from the dying planet Krypton, through his growing up as a human boy, to his work at the Daily Planet as mild-mannered Clark Kent. No-one knows that the shy reporter is the superhero who has to stop terrorists blowing up Metropolis and keep Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown) in check. 'Superman: A Little Piece of Home' contains another four episodes from the series. In the title episode, Superman foils a gem heist at a new museum funded by Metropolis' mastermind criminal Lex Luthor, but mysteriously falls ill when he comes near one of their rare green gems. Luthor figures out that this rare rock is really a meteorite from Superman's home planet Krypton. But Lois Lane (Dana Delany) proves that it doesn't take superpowers to ruin Luthor's plans. In 'Speed Demons', Superman and super-cocky Flash (Charlie Schlatter) decide to race one-on-one to settle who's the fastest man on the planet, but the contest is interrupted when a mysterious villain called Weather Wizard (Miguel Ferrer) threatens to destroy Metropolis unless his demands are met. In 'The Late Mr Kent', Clark Kent digs into a murder case a little too deep and is presumed dead. In 'Where There's Smoke', Superman takes on Volcana (Peri Gilpin), a woman with fiery powers. Finally, in the full-length feature 'All-Star Superman' (2011), as a result of his arch nemesis Lex Luther (Anthony LaPaglia)'s scheming, Superman (James Denton) is overexposed to radiation and is slowly dying. • The Last Temptation of Christ [Blu-ray] [1988] [Region Free]The Last Temptation of Christ | Blu Ray | (03/06/2013) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

It isn't difficult to imagine why this 1988 retelling of the Crucifixion story was picketed so vociferously on its release in the US--this Jesus bears little resemblance to the classical Christ, who was not, upon careful review of the Gospels, ever reported to have had sex with Barbara Hershey. Heavily informed by Gnostic reinterpretations of the Passion, The Last Temptation of Christ (based rather strictly on Nikos Kazantzakis's novel of the same name) is surely worth seeing for the controversy and blasphemous content alone. But the "last temptation" of the title is nothing overtly naughty--rather, it's the seduction of the commonplace; the desire to forgo following a "calling" in exchange for domestic security. Willem Dafoe interprets Jesus as spacey, indecisive and none too charismatic (though maybe that's just Dafoe himself), but his Sermon on the Mount is radiant with visionary fire; a bit less successful is method actor Harvey Keitel, who gives the internally conflicted Judas a noticeable Brooklyn accent, and doesn't bring much imagination to a role that demands a revisionist's approach. Despite director Martin Scorsese's penchant for stupid camera tricks, much of the desert footage is simply breathtaking, even on small screen. Ultimately, Last Temptation is not much more historically illuminating than Monty Python's Life of Brian, but hey, if it's authenticity you're after, try Gibbon's. --Miles Bethany

  • Coming to America [Blu-ray] [1988][Region Free]Coming to America | Blu Ray | (03/06/2013) from £6.87   |  Saving you £13.12 (190.98%)   |  RRP £19.99

Eddie Murphy's 1988 vehicle Coming to America was probably the point at which his status as a mainstream big-screen comedian finally gelled, following the highly successful 48 Hours pairing with Nick Nolte. Never mind the hackneyed storyline: under John Landis's tight direction, he turns in a star performance (and several brilliant cameos) that is disciplined and extremely funny. Murphy plays an African prince who comes to New York officially to sow his wild oats. Privately, he is seeking a bride he can marry for love rather than one chosen by his parents. With his companion (Arsenio Hall, who pushes Murphy all the way in the comedy stakes), he settles in the borough of Queens and takes a job in a hamburger joint. A succession of hilarious satire-barbed adventures ensue, plus the required romantic conclusion. The script is crammed with ripe one-liners , but "Freeze, you diseased rhinoceros pizzle" has to be the most devastating hold-up line of all time. Film buffs will appreciate a brief appearance by Don Ameche as a down-and-out, but this is Murphy's film and he generates warmth enough to convert the most ambivalent viewer. On the DVD: The only--rather pointless--extra on offer is the original theatrical trailer which adds nothing apart from a rapid recap of the story. But the 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation (the picture quality is diamond sharp) and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack recreate the original authentic cinematic experience. The choreography of 1980s pop diva Paula Abdul in the lavish wedding scenes and Nile Rodgers' pounding musical score are the main beneficiaries. --Piers Ford

  • In The Name Of The Father [Blu-ray] [1993][Region Free]In The Name Of The Father | Blu Ray | (03/06/2013) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

If it had been written as a piece of fiction no one would have believed it, but In the Name of the Father is the true story of one of the most shocking episodes in British legal history. Dealing with the events surrounding the Guildford pub bombing in 1974 and the subsequent 15-year fight for justice, the film portrays a nation in the grip of an anti-system, desperate to find culprits at any cost, however immoral, illegal or brutal. By playing out the drama in personal as well as political terms--the relationship between Gerry Conlon (Day-Lewis) and his father (Pete Postlethwaite) becomes the story's centrepiece--the film works on numerous levels, but the events are no less shameful for it. The court case that ultimately freed the three men and one woman only takes centre stage for the last 20 minutes but despite that--and the fact that the outcome is no secret--it is high drama and completely gripping. This is an unmissable example of genuinely courageous cinema. On the DVD: Where the real-life events behind the film might have offered huge scope for additional material, the DVD provides little beyond production and cast notes. The film's re-creation of both 1970s Belfast and London is very realistic, intensified by the anamorphic screen ratio, and the excellent soundtrack (including Bono, Sinead O'Connor and Thin Lizzy), which helps drive the action, is intensified by the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. --Phil Udell
