In Search Of The Trojan War | DVD | (10/05/2004)
from £5.49 | Saving you £14.50 (72.50%) | RRP
Originally broadcast in 1985, In Search of the Trojan War followed the successful formula established by his first historical detective series, In Search of the Dark Ages, and firmly established Michael Wood as the most personable of TV historians. Wood is not only a born TV presenter, he's got both academic gravitas and narrative skill to craft a compelling mystery from the archaeological, literary and mythological sources. Over six hour-long programmes, Wood marshals the disparate strands of evidence to present as fully rounded a portrait as possible of both historical and the legendary city of Troy, its central place in Western culture, and the Mycenaean Age itself. From Schliemann's initial cavalier bulldozing of the mound at Hisarlik, to Homer's epics, the Hittite Empire and the role of slave-women, Wood journeys back and forth across the Aegean and elsewhere, from a pre-unification Berlin to Liverpool, to illuminate the dawn of Western literature, myth and history. Did the Trojan War ever happen? Or was the city destroyed by natural causes? Wood doesn't claim to find a definitive answer, of course, but for the viewer it's rewarding enough simply to accompany him on this fascinating journey. On the DVD: In Search of the Trojan War is presented on two discs in unremarkable 4:3 TV format. There's a new 25-minute interview with Wood, who looks back affectionately on the making of the series. --Mark Walker

Minority Report - Single Disc Edition | DVD | (06/10/2003)
from £2.22 | Saving you £12.50 (69.50%) | RRP
Full of morally flawed characters, and shot in grainy desaturated colours, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is futuristic film noir with a far-fetched B-movie plot that's so feverishly presented the audience never gets a chance to ponder its many improbabilities. Based on a short story by Philip K Dick, the film is set in the Orwellian near-future of 2054, where a trio of genetically modified "pre-cogs" warn of murders before they happen. In an SF twist on the classic Hitchcockian wrong-man scenario, Detective John Anderton (Tom Cruise) is the zealous precrime cop who is himself revealed as a future killer. Plot twists and red herrings drive the action forward, and complications abound, not least Anderton's crippling emotional state, his drug habit, his avuncular-yet-sinister boss (Max Von Sydow) and the ambitious FBI agent Witwer (Colin Farrell) snapping at his heels. Though the film toys with the notion of free will in a deterministic universe, this is not so much a movie of grand ideas as forward-looking ones. Its depiction of a near-future filled with personalised advertising and intrusive security devices that relentlessly violate the right of anonymity is disturbingly believable. Ultimately, though, it's a chase movie and the innovative set-piece sequences reveal Spielberg's flair for staging action. As with A.I. before it, there's a nagging feeling that the all-too-neat resolution is a Spielbergian touch too far: the movie could satisfactorily have ended several minutes earlier. Although this is superior SF from one of Hollywood's greatest craftsmen, it would have been more in the spirit of Philip K Dick to leave a few tantalisingly untidy plot threads dangling. --Mark Walker
Doomsday | DVD | (01/09/2008)
from £3.79 | Saving you £6.20 (62.10%) | RRP
Loud, violent, and proudly derivative, the post-apocalyptic action-thriller Doomsday is the latest from UK cult director Neil Marshall, who impressed horror fans with his previous efforts, Dog Soldiers and The Descent. Both pictures established Marshall as a director with a knack for reinventing well-worn genre pictures, but here, he seems more interested in stitching together favorite scenes and elements from established horror and science-fiction films. Escape from New York is the main source for Doomsday, though there are plenty of nods to The Road Warrior and its multitude of Italian-made carbon copies, as well as the zombie/plague subgenre; the lovely but impassive Rhona Mitra is the Snake Plissken-esque loner sent by police (represented by Bob Hoskins) to infiltrate Scotland, which has descended into anarchy following a viral outbreak. The disease has surfaced in London (now a walled city), and Mitra is dispatched to find a scientist who may possess a cure. Marshall's vision of Scotland in ruins brings together the punk/modern primitive costume design of George Miller's Mad Max trilogy with some eclectic homegrown elements (knights on horseback defending a gang leader's castle), and while these touches are novel, the picture as a whole should ring overly familiar to any viewer who's spent time in the exploitation trenches during the past 25 years. Younger and less discerning audience members will undoubtedly enjoy the plentiful violence and gore, as well as the unbridled performances of the supporting cast, especially stuntwoman/actress Lee-Ann Liebenberg as the heavily tattooed Viper. --Paul Gaita
District 9 | Blu Ray | (28/12/2009)
from £4.69 | Saving you £20.30 (81.20%) | RRP
Producer Peter Jackson ('Lord Of The Rings') presents this action-packed instant sci-fi classic. Rich with social and political themes District 9 is also a spectacular effects-driven event picture offering clear evidence that blockbuster movies can have a brain to go along with the brawn! 1982 Johannesburg South Africa: A large alien spaceship hovers above the city carrying hundreds of thousands of ailing extraterrestrial creatures that the population of the 'Joburg' would soon come to unaffectionately refer to as 'Prawns'. Twenty-eight years later and tensions are mounting. The 'Prawns' live in a militarized ghetto zone called District 9 where they are confined in squalor. Munitions company Multi-National United is contracted to remove the extraterrestrial element with force to a distant compound. Unexpectedly bureaucrat Wikus van der Merwe supervises the military charge. However when Wikus discovers an unknown substance and accidentally ingests it he soon becomes the most hunted man in Johannesburg. Alone and stripped of his former life Wikus' only allies are the creatures he once sought to banish. Play.com Review Taking elements from Close Encounters Of The Third Kind David Croneburg's The Fly and cult eighties hit Alien Nation District 9 is an expansion of director Neill Blomkamp's 2005 short film Alive In Joburg. Filmed in a gritty handheld documentary style the movie thrusts viewers right into the heat of the action capturing the full force of mounting tensions between the otherworldly immigrants and the bitter locals. Throw in some scathing social satire remarkable - and sometimes grotesque - special effects (on a comparatively low budget) and some Hollywood-beating action scenes and you've got a movie that ticks all the boxes. As for the cast Sharlto Copley - soon to be seen as Captain 'Howling Mad' Murdock in the A-Team Movie - is a revelation as Wikus; mixing pathos naivet'' and desperation to remarkable effect. And that's not forgetting the alien creatures themselves: veering from super strong insatiable scavengers to thoughtful and intelligent freedom fighters these CGI creations hold up remarkably well and 'Christopher' one of Wikus' only allies is a wholly sympathetic and likeable character in stark contrast to the majority of the nefarious individuals who prowl the slums in search of Wikus. District 9 comes at a time when juggernauts such as Avatar Terminator Salvation Star Trek and Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen are on the scene and it easily holds its own against the competition. More cerebral and exciting than the average sci-fi action flick we urge you to take a trip to District 9 and experience one of the most exciting and original movies of the decade.

Alien vs Predator (Single Disc Edition) | DVD | (07/03/2005)
from £2.79 | Saving you £10.50 (65.70%) | RRP
In delivering non-18-rated excitement, Alien vs. Predator is an acceptably average science-fiction action thriller with some noteworthy highlights, even if it squanders its opportunity to intelligently combine two popular franchises. Rabid fans can justifiably ask "Is that all there is?" after a decade of development hell and eager anticipation, but we're compensated by reasonably logical connections to the Alien legacy and the still-kicking Predator franchise (which hinted at AVP rivalry at the end of Predator 2); some cleverly claustrophobic sets, tense atmosphere and impressive digital effects; and a climactic AVP smackdown that's not half bad. This disposable junk should've been better, but nobody who's seen Mortal Kombat or Resident Evil should be surprised by writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson's lack of imagination. As a brisk, 90-minute exercise in generic thrills, however, Anderson's work is occasionally impressive... right up to his shameless opening for yet another sequel. --Jeff Shannon
