  • Inside Job [DVD] Inside Job | DVD | (13/06/2011) from £3.00  |  Saving you £16.99 (85.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

As he did with the occupation of Iraq in No End in Sight, Charles Ferguson shines a light on the global financial crisis in Inside Job. Accompanied by narration from Matt Damon, Ferguson begins and ends in Iceland, a flourishing country that gave American-style banking a try--and paid the price. Then he looks at the spectacular rise and cataclysmic fall of deregulation in the United States. Unlike Alex Gibney's fiscal films, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Casino Jack, Ferguson builds his narrative around dozens of players, interviewing authors, bank managers, government ministers, and even a psychotherapist, who speaks to a culture that encourages Gordon Gekko-like behavior, but the number of those who declined to comment, like Alan Greenspan, is even larger. Though the director isn't as combative as Michael Moore, he asks tough questions and elicits squirms from several participants, notably former Treasury secretary David McCormick and Columbia dean Glenn Hubbard, George W. Bush's economic adviser. Their reactions are understandable, since the borders between Wall Street, Washington, and the Ivy League dissolved years ago; it's hard to know who to trust when conflicts of interest run rampant. If Ferguson takes Reagan and Bush to task for tax cuts that benefit the wealthy, he criticizes Clinton for encouraging derivatives and Obama for failing to deliver on the promise of reform. And in the category of unlikely heroes: former governor Eliot Spitzer, who fought against fraud as New York's attorney general (he's the subject of Gibney's documentary Client 9). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

  • Alien 3 [Blu-ray] Alien 3 | Blu Ray | (30/01/2012) from £7.65  |  Saving you £7.60 (47.50%)  |  RRP £15.99

By transplanting the classic haunted house scenario into space, Ridley Scott, together with screenwriters Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett, produced a work of genuinely original cinematic sci-fi with Alien that, despite the passage of years and countless inferior imitations, remains shockingly fresh even after repeated viewing. Scott's legendary obsession with detail ensures that the setting is thoroughly conceived, while the Gothic production design and Jerry Goldsmith's wonderfully unsettling score produce a sense of disquiet from the outset: everything about the spaceship Nostromo--from Tupperware to toolboxes-seems oddly familiar yet disconcertingly ... well, alien.Nothing much to speak of happens for at least the first 30 minutes, and that in a way is the secret of the film's success: the audience has been nervously peering round every corner for so long that by the time the eponymous beast claims its first victim, the release of pent-up anxiety is all the more effective. Although Sigourney Weaver ultimately takes centre-stage, the ensemble cast is uniformly excellent. The remarkably low-tech effects still look good (better in many places than the CGI of the sequels), while the nightmarish quality of H.R. Giger's bio-mechanical creature and set design is enhanced by camerawork that tantalises by what it doesn't reveal. On the DVD: The director, audibly pausing to puff on his cigar at regular intervals, provides an insightful commentary which, in tandem with superior sound and picture, sheds light into some previously unexplored dark recesses of this much-analysed, much-discussed movie (why the crew eat muesli, for example, or where the "rain" in the engine room is coming from). Deleted scenes include the famous "cocoon" sequence, the completion of the creature's insect-like life-cycle for which cinema audiences had to wait until 1986 and James Cameron's Aliens. Isolated audio tracks, a picture gallery of production artwork and a "making of" documentary complete a highly attractive DVD package. --Mark Walker

  • Kings And Queens [2002] Kings And Queens | DVD | (15/09/2003) from £4.89  |  Saving you £15.10 (75.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

Originally broadcast in the UK on Channel 5, Kings & Queens is a documentary series detailing the lives of 12 significant English rulers between 1066 and the present day. From William the Conqueror via Richard III to Queen Victoria and Elizabeth II, presenter Dr Nigel Spivey takes the viewer through the ages, describing the political intrigue, lust, battles and bloodshed that make up the histories of a "millennium of monarchs". By no means a definitive or exhaustive guide to the history of the nation's rulers, Kings & Queens is still a solid and watchable series. The most enjoyable episodes are those based on the more colourful royals; such as the incestuous, betrayal-prone Richard III, the mysteriously virginal Elizabeth I, or the "fat, gluttonous, sex-crazed" Henry VIII. Spivey is a lively and entertaining guide, but his energetic efforts to make the subject matter relevant and engaging are hampered by the series' low production values, which can only stretch to suspiciously repetitive battle reconstructions, a primitive soundtrack, cheap dramatisations and a 23-minute running time that leaves a number of the biographies feeling rushed and lacking in depth. The fact that a number of the historical chapters he is attempting to recreate--most notably Edward I's clash with "Braveheart" William Wallace, and Queen Victoria's relationship with John Brown--are familiar from more lavish, feature-length productions does not help. This is a shame, as those instances in which Spivey illustrates his stories using credible and authentic source material, such as a close examination of the Bayeaux Tapestry or, in the latter episodes, photographs and documentary footage, are vivid and engrossing. On the DVD: Kings & Queens is a two-disc set featuring episode and scene selection and subtitles but no extra features. --Paul Philpott

  • Species [1995] Species | DVD | (01/02/2000) from £5.99  |  Saving you £9.45 (59.10%)  |  RRP £15.99

There's a kind of perverse marketing genius at work in this cheesy sci-fi hit from 1995 in which scientists create a half-human, half-alien woman named Sil (Natasha Henstridge) who's capable of morphing from a slimy, tentacled creature into a blonde babe with the body of a Playboy centrefold. This makes it easy for Sil to lure gullible guys who are only too willing to indulge her voracious mating urge, realising too late that sex with Sil is anything but safe. As the body count rises, a handpicked team of specialists tracks the alien's killing spree, but their diverse expertise is barely a match for the ever-morphing Sil. Borrowing elements of the Alien movies (including bizarre alien designs by Swedish artist HR Giger) and spicing them up with some tantalising nudity, Species is a wet dream for creature-feature fans--kind of like watching a sci-fi vampire fantasy while browsing through the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Marley marks the first time ever that Bob's family has authorised the use of their own private Bob Marley archives.Bob Marley's universal appeal, impact on music history and his role as a social and political prophet is both unique and unparalleled. Only a handful of musicians have ever achieved such an impact and Bob Marley, though his life was far too short, stands strongly among them.I think what's great about the film is though there have been a lot of things done on Bob, I think this one will give people a more emotional connection to Bob's life as a man - not just a reggae legend or a mythical figure, but his life as a man. - Ziggy Marley
