Untouchable | DVD | (04/02/2013)
from £4.69 | Saving you £15.30 (76.50%) | RRP
Driss (Omar Sy), a Senegalese man living in a Paris slum, applies for a job as caretaker to a wealthy quadriplegic, but all he wants is to get his paper stamped so he can get benefits. Despite his lack of qualifications, he lands the job because of his attitude: Philippe (François Cluzet), the quadriplegic, wants a caretaker who will look at him without pity. As Driss reluctantly learns to move, feed, and clean Philippe, the two men discover a blunt but vital humour that not only bridges the cultural and class divide between them, but gives Philippe a renewed joy in life. It's easy to see what made Untouchable such a massive success in France; the movie has the sweet sincerity and uplifting conclusion that make for a classic feel-good experience. The chemistry between the two leads is undeniable, and Sy--who won the French equivalent of the Oscar for his role--is a dynamic and charismatic performer, while Cluzet's understated performance conveys Philippe's frustrations. The movie doesn't dig too deeply into the struggles of life as a quadriplegic or the struggles of life among the inner-city poor, so when Untouchable ends it's not likely to leave a lasting impression, but that doesn't get in the way of its immediate charm and warmth. --Bret Fetzer

Rosemary Conley's Ultimate Whole Body Workout | DVD | (17/04/2019)
from £2.99 | Saving you £7.00 (70.10%) | RRP
When dieting guru Rosemary Conley declares that the Ultimate Whole Body Workout is her last fitness video, cynics might either be relieved that the population is finally to be spared her evangelical diet-speak, or conclude that she's "past it". However, this programme is not so easily dismissed. There might be nothing new here, but there is no doubt that a great deal of Conley's success comes from her ability to motivate. Conley first runs through the key moves featured in the work-outs, cleverly eliminating the problem of figuring it out during the sessions--and the risk of giving up. The 35-minute aerobic workout and the 20-minute body conditioning session are designed to be done on alternative days, while the final chair programme is for those with limited mobility (including pregnant women) who still want to burn calories. With no expense spared on the original soundtrack, a series of pop hits make this all the more easy to go along with. Conley punctuates her instruction with references to members of her backing team and their weight-loss successes. This is a work-out for the woman committed to being slim against all odds, and for whom dieting is likely to be a lifestyle.--Lorna V

However, one day Mei gets lost in the forest and discovers a group of Totoros - protectors of the forest. Eventually Mei convinces Satsuki to come with her and the three have a series of wonderful adventures together, as their mother begins to recuperate.Hayao Miyazaki's imagination is simply incredible and My Neighbour Totoro perfectly displays his talent to create stories and characters that you really care about. from £10.29 | Saving you £9.70 (48.50%) | RRP
Of all Masaki Kobayashi's attacks on the cruelty and inhumanity perpetrated by authoritarian power (including The Human Condition and Samurai Rebellion) perhaps none are more brilliant than his visceral mesmerising Harakiri [aka Seppuku]. In a magnificent performance Tatsuya Nakadai (Yojimbo The Face of Another Ran) stars as Hanshiro Tsugumo a masterless down-and-out samurai who enters the manor of Lord Iyi requesting to commit ritual suicide on his property. Suspected of simply fishing for charity Hanshiro is told the gruesome tale of the last samurai who made the same request - but Hanshiro will not be moved... With its intricate structure and pressure-cooker atmosphere Kobayashi's first jidai-geki period drama is a full-scale demolition job of samurai ideals and feudal hypocrisy filmed with artistry and surgical precision and scored by celebrated composer Toru Takemitsu. Adapted from the same source novel in 2011 by notorious auteur Takashi Miike the original - winner of the 1963 Special Jury Prize at Cannes - still stands as a startling moment in Japanese cinema.
Barbara Currie - Seven Secrets Of Yoga | DVD | (27/12/2001)
from £2.99 | Saving you £17.00 (85.00%) | RRP
With the slinky white leotards, the pastel set and the references to toning and firming, yoga purists might be quick to dismiss Barbara Currie’s Seven Secrets of Yoga as yoga for middle England. Yet Barbara Currie is the Delia Smith of the yoga world--it’s not just that what she does works, but she knows exactly how to make it work for the rest of us. Though the title implies that this is a session divided into seven segments, there are in fact more than seven parts: a choice of two 10-minute miracles (beginners and advanced) recommended to start the day, followed by a series of six short sequences designed to work either as a sequence a day, or together in an entire, comprehensive session. Currie’s precise instruction covers balancing the body and mind, working the lower back and toning bottom and thighs, toning the tummy and waist, working the arms and neckline, stretching the entire body and relaxing. Though the focus appears to be toning up, the real surprise is at the end when Currie cleverly reveals the seven secrets: yoga is good for shape, weight, energy, relaxation, concentration, flexibility and youth. This is a succinct and inspiring explanation of the philosophy of yoga.--Lorna V
