  • Led Zeppelin [2003] Led Zeppelin | DVD | (26/05/2003) from £21.19  |  Saving you £3.80 (15.20%)  |  RRP £24.99

Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about. Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labour of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG. Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. On the DVD: Led Zeppelin two-disc set presents all the footage in pristine 4:3 picture ratio (the Madison Square Garden footage is letterboxed) with Dolby 5.1, DTS or PCM Stereo sound options. Note that the audio is uncompressed for maximum ear-shattering enjoyment. The menu screens do not pop up beforehand, but have to be selected. It's well worth doing so. Enjoy the music first, then discover that even the menus have been painstakingly designed to provide still more unseen footage and unheard recordings (some screens don't cycle round, but present another song in its entirety). Extras include rare TV appearances, interviews and bootleg footage. --Mark Walker

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live At Montreaux 1982 And 1985 Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live At Montreaux 1982 And 1985 | DVD | (01/11/2004) from £13.28  |  Saving you £-3.29 (-32.90%)  |  RRP £9.99

If you have even a passing interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan's peerless mastery of urban blues guitar, you must own Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985. Spaced almost exactly three years apart, these concerts (60 and 93 minutes, respectively) represent the Texan blues god at his fiery best, with Double Trouble (drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon) laying the solid foundation upon which SRV built a Fender-driven sound as fierce as it was perfectly refined. The '82 show was truly "success in disguise," because despite booing from a festival audience lulled by a day of acoustic blues, and the stunned dejection that SRV felt after persevering through a uncompromising set, this was the turning point in SRV's career, leading to post-show encounters with Jackson Browne and David Bowie, who proved instrumental in bringing Stevie's music to an appreciative global audience. When Stevie, Chris, and Tommy returned to Switzerland three years later, with organist Reese Wynans adding rich new dimension to the Double Trouble sound, the Montreux crowd was primed for a rip-snorting set, and SRV's jubilant response is a joyous thing to witness. One of SRV's favorite bluesmen, Johnny Copeland, appears for a three-song triumph in a set that's uniformly superior and ecstatically energized. Basic three-camera coverage is all you need, although guitar students--for whom this DVD is a godsend--will surely wish for more emphasis on SRV's picking and fretwork. Recording quality is superb in the Montreux tradition, with 5.1-channel remixes that surpass the original masters. A splendid 23-minute documentary features retrospective interviews with Layton, Shannon, Browne, and John Mayer, and the accompanying booklet includes a heartfelt reminiscence from Bowie. Stevie Ray may be gone, but Live at Montreux ensures that his gold-standard legacy will endure. --Jeff Shannon

  • Jean Michel Jarre - Jarre In China (2 DVDs and Live CD Album) Jean Michel Jarre - Jarre In China (2 DVDs and Live CD Album) | DVD | (06/06/2005) from £40.48  |  Saving you £-15.49 (-62.00%)  |  RRP £24.99

In 1981 Jean Michel Jarre was invited by the Chinese government to become the first western musician to perform in the People’s Republic of China. Performing 5 concerts in Beijing and Shanghai the tour encountered numerous problems including arriving at an arena to find only one power socket and having to buy back concert tickets from stone-faced VIPs and redistribute them free to the Chinese public. October 2004 and Jarre returns to Beijing with 70 tonnes of equipment to open China’s "Year of France" cultural exchange with an outdoor concert. Choosing a picturesque location at Wumen Gate in the Forbidden City, Jarre performed with both modern and traditional Chinese Orchestras, choir, opera singers, and several guest musicians including Chen Lin, and guitarist Patrick Rondat. Jarre was prevented from performing with China’s Cui Jian whose songs were sung by student demonstrators in 1989. Filmed in high definition and presented in 5.1 DTS and Dolby Digital surround sound (both at the concert and on DVD) the complete concert is presented. It looks and sounds fantastic, in no small part due to the THX mastering, a first for a music DVD. Jarre makes extensive use of new photographic projections on giant 3D inflatable screens, the laser harp, Theremin, and midi flute. The music is varied but would have benefited from band musicians on stage as the music sounds all too similar to the recent "Aero" album apart from some Chinese instrumentation. Jarre looks lonely on stage and recounts a similar track listing from the last 8 years. Highlights include "Voyage to Beijing" as well as the essential "Souvenir of China" and a highly orchestrated "Rendez Vous 2." Straight after the concert in the Forbidden City, Jarre travels by motorbike through the audience to Tian’anmen Sqaure where he played a small number of songs to the expectant Chinese crowd. A great idea to play a second concert, but a missed opportunity to play some better tracks like "Eldorado" or "Chronologie 4." Instead of remaking Edith Piaf’s "La Foule" in Chinese, a better choice might have an adaptation of Jarre’s own "C’est La Vie." The package includes a photo gallery and commentary from the composer. The making-of documentary is the icing on the cake, showing how hands-on Jarre is with all aspects of production, from trimming some trees to the lighting design. The included live CD album doesn’t add anything for those who have already bought the Aero album. Jarre’s work deserves to be on the DVD format and this is a highly presented premiere from a special event. --Colin Neal

Vanished for 65 million years dinosaurs are making a comeback both in the lab and in the public imagination. Combining pop culture with hard science Dinosaurs: Inside And Out takes viewers on a fast-paced fun and enlightening tour of what we know about dinosaurs and what we're just finding out about how they lived. This series of four one-hour programs moves from palaeontologists working to discover fossils in the field to the reconstruction of dinosaurs and their habitats and even into the shopping mall to see how dinosaurs capture our imaginations today. Renaissance Of The Dinosaurs: Many early palaeontologists in their haste to assemble as many of the dinosaurs as possible made mistakes in reconstructing dinosaurs and their habitats. See how today's scientists consider that dinosaurs may have been a completely unique group of animals far more complex and intelligent than we had ever imagined. Land Of The Giants: Travel back to the teeming landscape of the badlands of North America during the age of the dinosaurs where sheer size was a herbivore's best defence against predators. Discover how dinosaurs used their horns thick skulls and stamping feet not only to scare off enemies but also to attract mates. The Killer Elite: Despite our modern views about dinosaurs some of these creatures have managed to maintain their monstrous reputation: the carnivores. Find out how fleet-footed raptors used their razor-like claws to gut luckless prey and why the legendary Tyrannosaurus Rex may not have been the feared attacker as was once thought. And Then There Were None: How could dinosaurs flourish for over 160 million years and then suddenly vanish? In the Yucatan Peninsula lies an intriguing clue: the shadowy remains of a huge meteorite crater. Could it be the smoking gun that extinction theorists have been looking for?

Like the albatross glimpsed in the beginning of this 10-part series The Life of Birds quickly takes flight. Sir David Attenborough hosts this unprecedented and extraordinary global look at the magnificent and often curious winged species with which we share our planet. Like the best wildlife shows, The Life of Birds offers a fresh and accessible view of creatures we may take for granted (didn't Alfred Hitchcock warn us about that?). The focus of this series is not on the different bird species, but on bird behaviour. Remarkable and awe-inspiring footage preserves the wide range of tools and techniques with which birds fly, hunt for food, attract a mate, hatch their chicks and defend themselves against predators. Attenborough pops up in the most remote, most exotic locales, with occasional comic effect: at one point, night-vision cameras capture the rare sight of the nocturnal kiwi as it forages for food on a New Zealand beach; the camera pans to reveal scant paces away our guide shining a flashlight on the nonplussed bird. --Donald Liebenson

  • Robbie Williams - What We Did Last Summer - Robbie Williams Live At Knebworth [2003] Robbie Williams - What We Did Last Summer - Robbie Williams Live At Knebworth | DVD | (24/11/2003) from £9.50  |  Saving you £-4.99 (-27.70%)  |  RRP £17.99

What We Did Last Summer records the three August days in 2003 in which (it seemed) most of the Home Counties converged on rural Hertfordshire for Robbie Williams's record-breaking Knebworth gigs. For the 375,000 fans (or pilgrims) who endured the massive traffic jams and the sweltering heat to attend the concerts, Williams is their pop messiah--an image the star seems content to cultivate throughout the two-hour set. Opening the concert in the style of another who wowed the masses, the stage curtains fall to reveal Robbie hanging upside down like Houdini in an escapologist costume; and like that master showman, Williams manages to keep his audience spellbound too. Despite the tens of thousands at the gig, Robbie does his best to interact with the audience, utilising his charm in an almost impossible attempt to persuade the masses that he's performing individually to each and every one of them. Various items of Robbie's attire are thrown into the audience, and one good-looking female fan is pulled from the front row, an event that Mr Williams uses to his own benefit by consensually sticking his tongue down her throat. He also takes advantage of the size of the audience and the fading light, by requesting that those with cameras use them at the exact same moment. Like a galaxy of pulsating stars, the camera flashes look spectacular, an effect that could only have been witnessed at the time by those lucky enough to be on stage. Consisting mainly of greatest hits and tracks from Escapology, the show connects the familiar with the lesser-known songs. Nonetheless, despite this mix of old and new, there's a slight air of weariness about the gig. Maybe it's the plethora of other Robbie DVDs available, his sheer over-familiarity, or perhaps, as the star himself suggests, now that he's reached the pinnacle of his career he has nowhere else to go. Only time will tell whether the fans stay loyal, but this concert provides an excellent memento of Robbie on top. On the DVD: What We Did Last Summer has the two-hour gig on the first disc, presented with a choice of spectacular sound options: DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 or Stereo. The second disc, frankly, has a paltry amount of bonus material that takes up a fraction of the potential space available. The DVD-ROM extras should also come with a health warning, particularly the PC sound effects/clips, which have the potential to test the patience of a saint. Luckily there are a number of hidden extras including Robbie's legendary live performance of "Back for Good" with former Take That bandmate Mark Owen. --John Galilee
