  • The Cure - Trilogy - Live In Berlin [2002] The Cure - Trilogy - Live In Berlin | DVD | (01/12/2008) from £7.99  |  Saving you £0.00 (0.00%)  |  RRP £16.99

An ambitious yet practical idea, the Cure's Trilogy underscores the tonal and lyrical connections between three of the band's darkest albums in the last 20 years. The restless, ever-changing group, fronted by goth-gloomster Robert Smith, took up residence at the Tempodrom Berlin for a couple of nights in late 2002 for the express purpose of playing the group's 1982 Pornography, 1989's Disintegration, and 2000's Bloodflowers live and in their entirety. Whether it was a good idea or not depends on one's point of view. All three sets are long on droning, funereal rhythm sections, thick guitar lines that carry good pop melodies to overstylised destruction, and Smith's own cracked, morose vocals. On the other hand, fine distinctions emerge: The Disintegration portion of the show is lightest on its feet, with lush orchestration on "Plainsong", a hint of swing on "Lovesong", and cinematic tendencies in the stirring "The Same Deep Water as You". The rest of the concert is numbing. --Tom Keogh

  • Planet Earth [Blu-ray] Planet Earth | Blu Ray | (17/04/2019) from £9.85  |  Saving you £36.00 (72.00%)  |  RRP £49.99

As befits the BBC's reputation for producing some of the world's best nature documentaries, Planet Earth is an epic travelogue, focussing on different ecologies and the unique animals that inhabit them. Once again, Sir David Attenborough provides the narration, as the cameras fly across the surface of the earth, zooming in to give us a bug's eye view one minute, zooming out to give us an eagle's perspective the next. The BBC's cameramen filmed more than 200 locations, resulting in some truly spectacular footage, much of which has never before been seen--such as the rare sight of an endangered snow leopard hunting in the Himalayas, or great white sharks leaping from the water as they hunt. The creators of Planet Earth endured some of the world's most hostile environments, from the deepest ocean depths to an Antarctic blizzard to a fetid, cockroach- and bat-infested cave, just to grab a few moments of film; it's worth watching the "Making of" shorts that accompany each episode, in order to see just what lengths they had to go to. The three extra episodes here--Planet Earth: The Future--provide a sobering finale, as Sir David practically pleads with viewers to cherish the animals that we share this planet with, before it's too late. --Ted Kord

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live At Montreaux 1982 And 1985 Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live At Montreaux 1982 And 1985 | DVD | (01/11/2004) from £13.28  |  Saving you £-3.29 (-32.90%)  |  RRP £9.99

If you have even a passing interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan's peerless mastery of urban blues guitar, you must own Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985. Spaced almost exactly three years apart, these concerts (60 and 93 minutes, respectively) represent the Texan blues god at his fiery best, with Double Trouble (drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon) laying the solid foundation upon which SRV built a Fender-driven sound as fierce as it was perfectly refined. The '82 show was truly "success in disguise," because despite booing from a festival audience lulled by a day of acoustic blues, and the stunned dejection that SRV felt after persevering through a uncompromising set, this was the turning point in SRV's career, leading to post-show encounters with Jackson Browne and David Bowie, who proved instrumental in bringing Stevie's music to an appreciative global audience. When Stevie, Chris, and Tommy returned to Switzerland three years later, with organist Reese Wynans adding rich new dimension to the Double Trouble sound, the Montreux crowd was primed for a rip-snorting set, and SRV's jubilant response is a joyous thing to witness. One of SRV's favorite bluesmen, Johnny Copeland, appears for a three-song triumph in a set that's uniformly superior and ecstatically energized. Basic three-camera coverage is all you need, although guitar students--for whom this DVD is a godsend--will surely wish for more emphasis on SRV's picking and fretwork. Recording quality is superb in the Montreux tradition, with 5.1-channel remixes that surpass the original masters. A splendid 23-minute documentary features retrospective interviews with Layton, Shannon, Browne, and John Mayer, and the accompanying booklet includes a heartfelt reminiscence from Bowie. Stevie Ray may be gone, but Live at Montreux ensures that his gold-standard legacy will endure. --Jeff Shannon

Combining pop culture with hard science Dinosaurs: Inside And Out takes viewers on a fast-paced fun and enlightening tour of what we know about dinosaurs and what we're just finding out about how they lived. This series of four one-hour programs moves from palaeontologists working to discover fossils in the field to the reconstruction of dinosaurs and their habitats and even into the shopping mall to see how dinosaurs capture our imaginations today. Renaissance Of The Dinosaurs: Many early palaeontologists in their haste to assemble as many of the dinosaurs as possible made mistakes in reconstructing dinosaurs and their habitats. See how today's scientists consider that dinosaurs may have been a completely unique group of animals far more complex and intelligent than we had ever imagined. Land Of The Giants: Travel back to the teeming landscape of the badlands of North America during the age of the dinosaurs where sheer size was a herbivore's best defence against predators. Discover how dinosaurs used their horns thick skulls and stamping feet not only to scare off enemies but also to attract mates. The Killer Elite: Despite our modern views about dinosaurs some of these creatures have managed to maintain their monstrous reputation: the carnivores. Find out how fleet-footed raptors used their razor-like claws to gut luckless prey and why the legendary Tyrannosaurus Rex may not have been the feared attacker as was once thought. And Then There Were None: How could dinosaurs flourish for over 160 million years and then suddenly vanish? In the Yucatan Peninsula lies an intriguing clue: the shadowy remains of a huge meteorite crater. Could it be the smoking gun that extinction theorists have been looking for?

  • David Attenborough's Life Of Birds [1998] David Attenborough's Life Of Birds | DVD | (04/12/2000) from £6.99  |  Saving you £17.06 (56.90%)  |  RRP £29.99

Like the albatross glimpsed in the beginning of this 10-part series The Life of Birds quickly takes flight. Sir David Attenborough hosts this unprecedented and extraordinary global look at the magnificent and often curious winged species with which we share our planet. Like the best wildlife shows, The Life of Birds offers a fresh and accessible view of creatures we may take for granted (didn't Alfred Hitchcock warn us about that?). The focus of this series is not on the different bird species, but on bird behaviour. Remarkable and awe-inspiring footage preserves the wide range of tools and techniques with which birds fly, hunt for food, attract a mate, hatch their chicks and defend themselves against predators. Attenborough pops up in the most remote, most exotic locales, with occasional comic effect: at one point, night-vision cameras capture the rare sight of the nocturnal kiwi as it forages for food on a New Zealand beach; the camera pans to reveal scant paces away our guide shining a flashlight on the nonplussed bird. --Donald Liebenson
