  • Kenny [DVD] Kenny | DVD | (20/11/2017) from £4.39  |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)  |  RRP £N/A

'Kenny' is an incredible feature film that tells the unique story of a man whose life and career have become entwined with the fortunes of his adopted city. Tragedy and triumph have been shared over more than thirty years, cementing Kenny Dalglish's place in the hearts of everyone who lives in the city. Known as 'The King', Kenny Dalglish was revered by fans during his time at Liverpool FC, where as a player and manager he won 27 trophies. However, arguably his greatest challenge came in the aftermath of Hillsborough, when he became a beacon of hope and strength in the fight for justice that followed. In 1985, following the Heysel Stadium disaster, Kenny was appointed Player-Manager of Liverpool Football Club. Already lionized for his feats on the pitch, this intensely private 34-year old was now the public face of Liverpool, making the leap from player to gaffer with 39 deaths hanging over the club, the city, the entire nation. His success at the club during the years that followed are uniquely captured through his eyes and interviews with legendary former players such as Alan Hansen, Ian Rush, and John Barnes as well as one of his greatest rivals Sir Alex Ferguson. These triumphs were eventually overshadowed by Hillsborough, the impact of that terrible day revealed by Kenny, his closest friends and family, with the toil of carrying the grief of an entire city eventually leading to Kenny's resignation as manager. Uplifting, powerful, funny but at times truly heart breaking, this unique portrait of a proud Scotsman who captured the hearts of Merseyside will move everyone who watches it. This film tells the story of one of football's greatest players and a city's favourite son. • Germany 1 England 5 [2001] Germany 1 England 5 | DVD | (29/10/2001) from £2.47  |  Saving you £12.63 (63.20%)  |  RRP £19.99

Germany 1, England 5 commemorates the game that elevated coach Sven-Goran Eriksson to his (albeit temporary) status as greatest living man in England, after an unforeseen and unforgettable pummelling of the team England love to hate. September 1, 2001, will linger long in the memory as the day England travelled to Munich for a vital World Cup qualifier against Germany and quickly went one-down in time-honoured tradition. Lest we forget, only a few months previously Germany had soiled the last ever international at Wembley with a victory that sent little Kevin Keegan into a spiral of self-loathing; they boasted a 28-year unbeaten home record; and the hosts had already booked alternative matches on the World Cup play-off dates that this 5-1 result hilariously forced them to change. You'll know the story--a Michael Owen hat-trick, plus superb strikes from Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey, as the Germans look on aghast--but the magic of that late summer evening is worth wallowing in again. The pictures and commentary are from the BBC--Motson and Brooking (with no option to turn them off, unfortunately)--and you get the full 90-minutes, all the relevant replays you could wish for, plus the pre-match build-up and some post-match reaction interviews from the night itself. This is a cherished snapshot of a sporting moment when anything seemed possible for England. On the DVD: Germany 1, England 5 on disc comes with a reasonable selection of extras--though the lack of alternative commentaries cuts down on the repeat-viewing appeal. "Player Cams" are not alternative takes of the match but mini-montages of action featuring Beckham, Owen, Gerrard, Heskey and Scholes. "Goal Frenzy" offers extended montages of the goals themselves. "U21 Highlights" are extended highlights of the corresponding U21 qualifier. --Alex Hankin

  • Riding Giants [2004] Riding Giants | DVD | (22/08/2005) from £3.00  |  Saving you £16.99 (85.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Riding Giants is more than another blissful surfing movie. It's an outstanding documentary about one era in American alternative lifestyles, when surfing was well-suited to a radical culture of social dropouts. Using an amazing array of amateur film clips, shot for the most part in Hawaii and California from the late 1950s and early '60s, director Stacy Peralta traces the rise of surfing's appeal to young men looking to test themselves in an unorthodox (and sexy) milieu--of "living life to the fullest," as former surfer-turned-screenwriter John Milius (Big Wednesday) puts it at one point. Lengthy chapters on the glories of Oahu's Makaha and the "superstition and dread" that accompanied the big-wave challenge of Waimea Bay are riveting and sometimes heroic, particularly told through the memories of surf legend Greg Noll. Great material, too, about the deadly wonders of surfing Mavericks, California, where the rocks will get one if the violent tides don't. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

  • 1966 World Cup Final [2002] 1966 World Cup Final | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £2.34  |  Saving you £11.31 (70.70%)  |  RRP £15.99

The 1966 World Cup Final is arguably the most revered sporting achievement in English history, certainly English football's most frequently eulogised match, but have you actually ever seen it? If not this enhanced DVD release is nothing short of essential. Featuring the original black and white BBC coverage of the match, with Kenneth Wolstenholme at the commentator's mike, this is an opportunity for even those familiar with the big moments--five goals and "they think it's all over"--to watch the action in its entirety. It's an experience rather similar to people's descriptions of meeting TV stars--everyone's shorter, taller, fatter, thinner, balder than you expect--but even simply viewed as a game of football this is something of a classic, with disputed goals, clattering tackles, last-minute equalisers and dodgy officials, putting the achievement of Moore and co into its proper context. On the DVD: The 1966 World Cup Final comes to DVD with a sparkling slew of extras. The choicest feature is the alternative match commentary provided, live, by five of the England team themselves--Jack Charlton, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst, George Cohen and Gordon Banks. It's a frequently hilarious, sometimes touching additional perspective, delivered in an entertainingly chaotic style by five men who may share a common bond, but clearly see the task in hand somewhat differently. Aside from text-only profiles of the England 11 (no subs in those days), and a gallery of stills from the match and build-up, there are three additional mini-programmes. Exclusive interviews with Tina Moore (wife of late England captain Bobby Moore), and with the late commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme, tear down some of the media-generated nonsense that has grown to obscure the match and its key participants, with their personal reflections on the event and its resonance. John Motson narrates an entertaining documentary on "The Summer of 66", featuring archive and contemporary interviews with players and fans. --Alex Hankin
