  • Nanny McPhee [Blu-ray] Nanny McPhee | Blu Ray | (19/07/2010) from £3.49  |  Saving you £16.50 (82.50%)  |  RRP £19.99

You'll learn to love her...warts and all. Emma Thompson whose first screenplay won the 1995 Oscar' for Sense and Sensibility returns to screenwriting with Nanny McPhee a motion picture adaptation of the Nurse Matilda books by Christianna Brand. Thompson the only person to have won Oscars' for both acting and writing also plays the title role in Nanny McPhee opposite Colin Firth Kelly Macdonald and - in her first role for the big screen in two decades - Angela Lansbury. In this dark and witty fable Thompson portrays a person of unsettling appearance and magical powers who enters the household of the recently widowed Mr. Brown (Firth) and attempts to tame his seven exceedingly ill-behaved children. The children led by the oldest boy Simon (Love Actually's Thomas Sangster) have managed to drive away 17 previous nannies and are certain that they will have no trouble with this one. But as Nanny McPhee takes control they begin to notice that their vile behavior now leads swiftly and magically to rather startling consequences. Her influence also extends to the family's deeper problems including Mr. Brown's sudden and seemingly inexplicable attempts to find a new wife; an announcement by the domineering Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury) that she intends to take one of the children away; and the sad and secret longings of their scullery maid Evangeline (Kelly Macdonald). As the children's behavior begins to change Nanny McPhee's arresting face and frame appear to change as well creating even more questions about this mysterious stranger whom the children and their father have come to love.

But once she's arrived Nanny McPhee discovers that Mrs. Green's children are fighting a war of their own against two spoiled city cousins who have just moved in and refuse to leave. Relying on everything from a flying motorcycle and a statue that comes to life to a tree climbing piglet and a baby elephant who turns up in the oddest places Nanny McPhee uses her magic to teach her mischievous charges five new lessons.

  • Hey Arnold - The Movie [1996] Hey Arnold - The Movie | DVD | (07/07/2003) from £6.86  |  Saving you £7.44 (46.50%)  |  RRP £15.99

Adapted from the popular Nickelodeon show, Hey Arnold! continues the adventures of the blithely cheerful, football-headed Arnold (voice by Spencer Klein) on the big screen. When corrupt developer Schek (Paul Sorvino) threatens to buy the run-down urban neighbourhood where Arnold lives, he and his best friend Gerald (Jamil Smith) rally the neighbours to keep their homes from being turned into a mega-mall. After their peaceful efforts fail, they turn to espionage in a spoof of Men in Black and other action films. Hey Arnold! suffers from the same difficulty as many theatrical features spawned from TV cartoons: the characters have to solve a problem that's too big. The James Bond-style gadgetry and car chases don't fit into the slightly skewed vision of fourth-grade life that made the series popular. The limited animation and awkward designs will work better in the video release. --Charles Solomon

  • Secretariat [DVD] [2010] Secretariat | DVD | (28/03/2011) from £4.19  |  Saving you £7.80 (65.10%)  |  RRP £11.99

The "greatest racehorse of all time" mantle fits easily around the neck of Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown winner. So why not a movie version of this champion's life? Secretariat begins in the late '60s, with some good behind-the-scenes material on how thoroughbreds come to be (there's flavorful atmosphere inside the horsey world, including an account of Secretariat's ownership being decided by a coin flip as part of an old-school agreement). A highly lacquered Diane Lane plays Penny Chenery, the inheritor of her father's stables, who segues from being an all-American mom to running a major horse-racing franchise; reliable character-actor support comes in the form of John Malkovich, as a gaudily outfitted trainer, and Margo Martindale, as Chenery's assistant. Screenwriter Mike Rich and director Randall Wallace must do some heavy lifting to make Lane's privileged millionaire into some sort of underdog--luckily, the hidebound traditions of the male-dominated racing scene provide some sources of outrage. The need to stack the deck even more leads the movie into its more contrived scenes, unfortunately, as though we needed dastardly villains in order to root for Penny and her horse. Meanwhile, attempts to reach for a little Seabiscuit-style social relevance don't come off, and a curious religious undertone might make you wonder whether we're meant to assume that God chose Secretariat over some less-deserving equine. The actual excitement of the races can't be denied, however, and Secretariat's awe-inspiring win at the Belmont Stakes remains a jaw-dropping, still-unequalled display of domination in that event. And maybe in sports. --Robert Horton

  • The Smurfs [DVD] The Smurfs | DVD | (05/12/2011) from £1.79  |  Saving you £18.20 (91.00%)  |  RRP £19.99

Once in a blue moon, one gets a glimpse of what's truly important in life--and it's not always what one might expect. In the hidden land of the Smurfs, the perpetually happy blue creatures are preparing for the Blue Moon festival. They have no clue that the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) is about to follow one of them into their secret world in an attempt to capture their happy essence--a substance guaranteed to render his magic all-powerful. In a striking parallel to Enchanted, a vortex suddenly opens up and sucks Papa, Grouchy, Smurfette, Brainy, Gutsy and Clumsy Smurf into the middle of New York City, with Gargamel following close behind. Shocked expectant parents Patrick and Grace Winslow (Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) end up with an apartment full of the little blue beings. They eventually befriend the Smurfs and agree to help them outsmart Gargamel and find their way back home. What ensues is a danger-filled, comical adventure that takes the Smurfs from Central Park to Patrick's place of employment and even FAO Schwarz. Just when it looks like their plan to return home will fail, and that they've destroyed Patrick's career in the process, things really heat up and everyone learns a lesson about what's really important in life and about believing in oneself. The film does a good job melding live action and animation, and there's plenty of humour involved for both kids and adults. Most kids will laugh their way through the film, but there are some situations of peril that the very youngest or easily frightened might find rather intense. Harris and Mays do a good job interacting with their new blue friends, but it's too bad these talented actors weren't given a bit more depth of character to work with. Azaria is quite an effective villain and Frank Welker's cat Azrael is hysterical. Other notable voice talent includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy, Katy Perry as Smurfette, Fred Armisen as Brainy, George Lopez as Grouchy and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy. The Smurfs is funny enough family entertainment, but given its star-studded cast, it had the potential to be even better. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi
