| RRP Remember the old days, when Pamela Anderson was still just a Playboy Playmate turned Baywatch babe? You know--back before the bootleg release of her infamous home video with then-husband and ne'er-do-well rocker Tommy Lee, at which time the whole world got to compare Pam's barely adequate acting chops with her formidable skill at fellatio? Yes, those were the days (1996, to be exact), when a movie like Barb Wire represented dubious progress for the busty blonde, who was determined to make as big a splash on the big-screen as she did in the world's most popular syndicated TV series. Set in the year 2017 when the Second Civil War is in full force, this sci-fi action thriller stars Pam in the title role--a leather-clad biker babe ("don't call me babe," she warns) who runs a nightclub in the last free city in America. The rest of country is controlled by the "Congressional Directorate," a dictatorial superpower which suspects Barb of trafficking in black-market contraband. That gets her into plenty of trouble (and a lot of cleavage-revealing costumes), and ... well, if any of this sounds even vaguely familiar, it's because this comic book-inspired movie is really just a shamelessly breast-enhanced variation on Casablanca, with Pam Anderson in the Bogart role. Taken for what it is, it's a brazen folly with action to spare, and as guilty pleasures go it's surprisingly enjoyable. What--you were expecting Oscar material? --Jeff Shannon

On the island the expedition witness a mysterious ritual to a strange beast called Kong. They soon realise that Kong is the gigantic ape that Prescott is searching for... Mad City | DVD | (22/04/2002)
from £12.10
| Saving you £1.89 (15.62%)
| RRP Mad City is an earnest effort at media criticism that's never convincing enough to stir a viewer's outrage in the way filmmaker Costa-Gavras (Music Box) might have intended. John Travolta plays a barely educated museum guard who is laid off from his job and ends up holding his former boss (Blythe Danner) and a bunch of schoolchildren hostage. Dustin Hoffman is a former television-network journalist making a grab at the limelight again by pushing and controlling press coverage of the story. What follows is by the numbers and not nearly as enlightening or enthralling as other films (such as Dog Day Afternoon or Billy Wilder's Ace in the Hole) about simple events manipulated into a media circus. Despite Travolta's tragic performance and Hoffman's impassioned one, the film breaks up over efforts to blame electronic voyeurism for social chaos. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever | DVD | (04/08/2003)
from £19.99
| Saving you £-6.00 (N/A%)
| RRP If you have a hearty appetite for fiery explosions, heavy ordnance and nonsensical mayhem, Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever is just for you. This mindless action flick is so wrong-headed that even its ungainly title is inaccurate: as expert assassins on the fringes of government intelligence, FBI agent Ecks (Antonio Banderas) and Defence Intelligence agent Sever (Lucy Liu) aren't battling each other at all. Instead, he's trying to find his missing ex-wife (the stunning but expressionless Talisa Soto) and young son, while she's pursuing an agency turncoat (Gregg Henry) who's stolen the ultimate micro-technology for clandestine killing. United against a common enemy, Ecks and Sever lay waste to half of Vancouver (the film's budget-conscious location), and it all makes as much sense as meatballs on a vegetarian menu. Banderas and Liu look fabulous as corpses pile up around them, but Thai action director Kaos (aka Wych Kaosayananda) must have confused his nickname with the incomprehensible plot of his movie. --Jeff Shannon

The Professionals - Season 2 | DVD | (05/08/2002)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP The second series of The Professionals hit television screens running in 1978, with Martin Shaw and Lewis Collins now wearing their roles--and their trousers--as the fearless CI5 duo, Bodie and Doyle, like second skins. Brian Clemens' creation, based on the notion of a special crime-busting unit, targeting terrorism, espionage and international wrong doing, crackles with humorous one-line exchanges, car chases, shoot-outs and punch-ups, all under the auspices of Gordon Jackson's George Cowley, a man with a tight reign on his team's anarchic tendencies. "Anyone who disobeys will spend the rest of his life watching trawlers in the outer Hebrides," he warns, with no expectation that his star boys will take a blind bit of notice. The formula works time and again. And it's so unmistakeably British: the irony-laden scripts; action which always seems to be filmed on the dankest of autumn days; locations which run the gamut of every dreary ring road, piece of urban wasteland and derelict warehouse within 30 miles of central London; and the kind of committed performances from a succession of stalwart guest stars which defines the quality of British television drama. Defiantly of its time, The Professionals is mercifully free of self-conscious political correctness and perhaps because of that, and despite the stylised violence at its heart, it retains an innocence and a quirky sense of humour which its modern equivalents--anything starring Ross Kemp or Robson Green--can never hope to match. TV heaven, of a sort. On the DVD: The Professionals, Series 2 comes in a package that has been lovingly and skilfully compiled to satisfy the most demanding of fans, with all 14 episodes digitally remastered and presented in sharp 4:3 format matched by a clean mono soundtrack. The extras--interactive mission briefs, snatches of Cowley's orders, car and fashion notes and guest star listings--are topped by an interview with creator Brian Clemens and composer Laurie Johnson. Anecdotes abound, covering casting decisions, the television production climate of the late 1970s and the hopelessness of British Leyland. The excellent booklet includes even more, with descriptions of the filming process and the actors' physical training, plus minutiae for the dedicated Professionals anorak. --Piers Ford

| RRP Makes Steve McQueen's Bullitt 'look like a cartoon' said Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson. Banned in 1976, terrifying yet exhilarating and absolutely compulsive - this now legendary film with its surprise ending through beautiful 70s Paris has been shrouded in myths since its first release. Was seminal French director Claude Lelouch really arrested when it was first shown? Was it a Formula 1 driver in the iconic Ferrari 275 GTB at the wheel? If it's real, how did he do it? Lelouch's electrifying 9-minute drive has to be seen to be believed. No car chase on film has, or ever will, come close. The reality of no special effects, edits or blocking off streets is terrifying.
