Casting a cold eye on politicians of all hues at its climax it achieves true tragic intensity. Ambush At Blood Pass: Yojimbo a ronin (Mifune) is secretly commissioned to travel to Sanshu Pass. This once crucial thoroughfare in the time of the warlords is now just a backroad used by outcasts. There he is to wait until an undisclosed event occurs. On his journey he rescues a woman from her violent husband and takes her away with him. They arrive at an inn run by an old man and his granddaughter. This place has become home to a bunch of misfits including a one-time physician (Katsu) a wandering gambler and an officer of the law together with his prisoner. A dramatic chain of events unfolds forcing the once hostile and untrusting characters to unite in a common cause: their own survival. Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo: The gentle breeze the murmur of a babbling brook the scent of plums. These memories call Zatoichi the blind swordsman back to a once-loved village. But memories are deceptive and he arrives to find things much changed. The former boss Hyoroku has been reduced to a carver of statues of Jizo the Buddha of Healing and his daughter Umeno has become a hostess and as she describes herself one of the bad ones. Control of the village is split between a former travelling merchant Eboshiya and his son Masagoro. Eboshiya befriends Zatoichi and seeks his aid against Masagoro's minder the drunken samurai Yojimbo the crooked crook. When a masseur is killed amidst rumours that a large amount of gold has been secreted in the village the two factions begin to size each other up. It is at this point that Masagoro's younger son suddenly decides his father needs more protection and calls on the services of the contract killer Kuzuryu.

  England has been overrun by a pandemic with no apparent cure. As the infection continues to spread, safety - for a lucky few - looms in the form of a damaged 747 set to seek solace abroad. It's only once the plane is airborne that the survivors discover the infection made it onto the flight with them. As the survivors begin to take sides and try to impress their desires on one another, it becomes clear they're in as much danger from each other as they are from the infection. Shot through with an uncomfortably intimate tension, The Carrier mixes classic elements of the best apocalyptic movies with its own unique flourishes to create a film that feels both reminiscent of the masters of the genre and fresh enough to be consider a roaring in its own right. Tight direction by Anthony Woodley combines with a strong script to bring character and emotion to the forefront and deliver a very human story amid the spread of infection. As the death toll rises and, with the plane forced to land, a battle against the infected reveals the darkest traits of humankind.

  In TimeAs a storyteller, Andrew Niccol tends to think big, tackling heady subjects such as genetic predestination (Gattaca), the nature of reality (The Truman Show), and celebrity in the cyber age (S1m0ne). In Time, Niccol's first film since 2005's Lord of War, has a typically gigantic premise--a world where everyone over 25 years old must pay for every continued second of their existence--but stumbles in the execution. While the ideas are exceedingly clever, the telling isn't especially witty. Justin Timberlake stars as a goodhearted but desperate minimum-wager trapped in a society where the rich are essentially immortal and the poor see their lifespan shorten with every purchase. (A cup of coffee costs 4 minutes, taking the bus also takes 30 minutes off of your life, and so on.) After being gifted with a century by a mysterious benefactor, he begins a romance with a beautiful socialite (Amanda Seyfried), whose father holds the key to the entire monetary system. Matters are complicated with the introduction of a relentless time cop (Cillian Murphy) with his own motivations for restoring the unnatural balance of things. Niccol has fun laying out the aspects of a world where even the elderly are genetically frozen at age 25 (the scenes where Timberlake interacts with his mother, played by a disturbingly spry Olivia Wilde, are an unsavoury hoot), but has difficulty translating the ingenuity of his concept to a compelling narrative, which rapidly devolves into a mix of uninspired chase scenes and a succession of time-related puns that would have trouble passing muster on a Laffy Taffy wrapper. (The bad guys threaten to clean Timberlake's clock. Repeatedly.) While science fiction aficionados will find much to chew on in Niccol's askew reality, In Time never quite hits the marks that its own ideas suggest. As a film, it's more fun to think about than watch. --Andrew Wright The Darkest HourFancy a sci-i movie where you can shift your brain to neutral, and just sit back and watch an alien invasion take place? Then The Darkest Hour presents itself as a fine candidate for a blockbuster night in front of the television. There's nothing massively radical about the concept. A bunch of five young Americans find themselves in Moscow, just as the world finds itself under the threat of alien invasion. As such, The Darkest Hour trains its focus on its principal quintet, as they battle to survive. Which, as you've probably correctly guessed by now, is all the excuse needed for a mixture of special effects, a few thrillers, and a fun hour and a half of mayhem. The Darkest Hour doesn't quite have a blockbuster-level budget. The picture sparkles in particular, with the lively visuals benefiting enormously from the clarity of a 1080p video transfer and don't overlook the workout your audio system gets, either. This is a loud, fast film, that's happy to put any half-decent surround sound system through its paces. It gladly does so, too. Awards aren't going to be lavished at the door of The Darkest Hour anytime soon, but it's an enjoyable film, that notwithstanding. In fact, it's an enjoyable film that's just as entertaining second time round. And while occasionally the economy of its budget is evident, The Darkest Hour nonetheless punches above its weight. --Jon Foster

Blending fiction and fact to create a moving and startling vision of the personal as well as the public consequences of such an attack Watkins exposes the inadequacy of the nation's Civil Defence programme and questions the philosophy of the nuclear deterrent. Conspicuously absent from TV screens until 1985 it was mainly through cinema release in 1966 - and its Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1967 - that it gained a loyal and vociferous following providing a sharp focus for CND and other peace movements. This special edition DVD also includes Watkins' award-winning The Diary of an Unknown Soldier and The War Game - The Controversy in which Patrick Murphy reveals new information pointing to a definitive account of the banning of the film.

  Classic Kung Fu fare from the Hong Kong school directed by the old master himself, Joseph Kuo, Born Invincible has only been available in an extremely crackly print for years. Fortunately this version has been cleaned up, though lovers of Oriental kitsch will be glad to hear that the risible, excruciating dubbing remains intact. The plot revolves around the evil Ching Ying (Carter Wong), who has trained since the age of three in the near-impossible art of Tai Chi Kung Fu. His body has become tantamount to a single, deadly muscle, the 108 pressure points of human vulnerability reduced to just one--his sole weakness. His training has also left him with whitened hair and a voice that, dubbed, is a little too close to Harry Enfield's Grayson character from the Mr Cholmondley-Warner sketches in high excitement. Having killed two elders of the Lei Ping school in martial combat over an old score, it falls to the students of that establishment to avenge their masters, through three rigorous years of training. The awesome, though often-comical fight scenes (which in no way resemble Tai Chi) dominate the movie, involving as they do protracted acrobatic manoeuvres, few of which seem to involve actual contact with the human body. Still, lovers of The Matrix might care to revisit this, in order to check out how those moves were first committed to celluloid when editing was less of a fine art. --David Stubbs
