| RRP This moving WW2 drama deservedly won the 1958 Cannes Palme d'Or and reintroduced Soviet cinema to the outside world as well as being a huge domestic box office hit. Veronica (Tatiana Samoilova who won the Best Actress Award in Cannes for the role) is madly in love with her fianc Boris (Alexei Batalov) who departs for the front to do his patriotic duty for the war effort. The film looks at the impact of the war on the participants: the lovers who fail to say their farewells prior to Boris' departure through unfortunate circumstances; his surgeon father who has to continue caring for his patients; and the shifty cousin trying to avoid the conflict altogether. The story unravels to depict a poignant portrayal of blameless individuals doing their best to survive the travails of tragedy and hardship. The film's compelling narrative is complemented by brilliant cinematography which was way ahead of its time.

| RRP Twelve-year-old twins Ai and Yu Hayakawa take a mysterious subway to Wonderland to look for their missing scientist-parents. Wonderland is a hostile place, ruled by the petulant Earl Tyrant and his assorted hench-creatures. Ai and Yu are attacked by monsters and saved first by Lisa, a practitioner of the "Kigen Arts," then repeatedly by the taciturn, gun-totting Kaze. The first episodes are cluttered with characters who appear briefly then vanish. Although Ai, Yu, and Lisa do a lot of traveling, the series doesn't really go anywhere: the filmmakers seem more interested in showcasing the elaborate CG effects at their disposal than in coherent storytelling. The effects are very flashy, but they never meld satisfactorily with the drawn animation. Based on the popular videogame franchise, Unlimited borrows from Matsumoto's Galaxy Express and Miyazawa's Galactic Railroad, but offers none of their mystery and magic. (Rated 12 and older: violence, tobacco use)
