With the help of MIB (Oliver Platt) and Hank (A Single Man's Nicholas Hoult), they seek out other mutants, while fending off Shaw and Emma Frost (Mad Men's January Jones), who try to recruit them for more nefarious ends, leading to a showdown in Cuba between the United States and the Soviet Union, the good and bad mutants, and Charles and Erik, whose goals have begun to diverge. Throughout, Vaughn crisscrosses the globe, piles on the visual effects, and juices the action with a rousing score, but it's the actors who make the biggest impression as McAvoy and Fassbender prove themselves worthy successors to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. The movie comes alive whenever they take centre stage, and dies a little when they don't. For the most part, though, Vaughn does right by playing up the James Bond parallels and acknowledging the debt to producer Bryan Singer through a couple of clever cameos. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Offering mere handfuls of rice as payment, they hire seven unemployed "ronin" (masterless samurai), including a boastful swordsman (Toshiro Mifune) who is actually a farmer's son desperately seeking glory and acceptance. The samurai get acquainted with but remain distant from the villagers, knowing that their assignment may prove to be fatal. The climactic battle with the raiding thieves remains one of the most breathtaking sequences ever filmed. It's poetry in hyperactive motion and one of Kurosawa's crowning cinematic achievements. This is not a film that can be well served by any synopsis; it must be seen to be appreciated and belongs on the short list of any definitive home-video library. --Jeff Shannon

  This is the entire first series of Reeves and Mortimer's long-awaited take on the cult classic Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and it's surely the most re-watchable of television series, not least because of its improbable plots. The anticipation which preceded the show was a drama in itself. How will it compare with the original? Would Reeves and Mortimer be able to cut it in acting roles? Will the cast be upstaged by her wardrobe? The answers were, of course, "perfectly", "no problem" and "probably not, but the BBC wardrobe department certainly excelled themselves for this series". In fact, the premise of this humorous supernatural detective fantasy (a genre which probably contains nothing other than this series and the original)--a dead private detective comes back as a ghost to assist his partner, who is the only mortal who can see him--could easily have occurred as one of those surreal narratives from the duo's comedy shows. A must-see. On the DVD: the DVD includes a lively behind-the-scenes documentary (broadcast at the beginning of the series), an unfunny collection of outtakes and a rather better music video which comes on like Blue Velvet "re-imagined" by Cubby Broccoli.--Roger Thomas
