Just when Buntarou's future seems its bleakest, classmate Sayuki Kuroda asks him to write for her bishoujo video game development group. Suddenly, all the pieces start to fall together, but as Buntarou and Sayuki recruit more girls (and one romantically challenged guy), they'll find that the path through the wasteland of life is filled with more twists than any game. • Chopper Chicks In Zombietown [1989]Chopper Chicks In Zombietown | DVD | (20/11/2000) from £12.98   |  Saving you £-7.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £2.99

With a title like Chopper Chicks in Zombietown, you'd be excused from any great expectations here--but you'd also be missing out on one of trash-cinema's great pleasures: catching one of Hollywoood's A-list in their pre-fame days. In this case, the catch is Billy Bob Thornton, in a brief appearance as one of the Chopper Chicks' ex-husbands. It may be a guilty pleasure, but seeing this good 'ol boy playing dumb-as-a-doorknob long before Sling Blade (or A Simple Plan) and paying his dues is still, however strangely, gratifying. As for the film itself, Chopper Chicks is no Hell Comes to Frogtown, but it comes with all of the Troma hallmarks. The requisite beheadings and low-grade effects are all present and correct, along with the so-bad-it's-really-bad dialogue (except for the occasional so-bad-it's-good one-liner). The acting is wooden, the story negligible (cycle sluts come to town, kill zombies, save a schoolbus full of blind kids), and even the appearances by Thornton and original MTV (US) VJ Martha Quinn provide only occasional relief. The DVD extras include a photo gallery of screen-stills and the original trailer. --Randy Silver

  • The African Queen [1951]The African Queen | DVD | (19/09/2005) from £9.98   |  Saving you £-3.99 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

The boozing smoking cussing captain of a tramp steamer Charlie Allnut saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter Black Heart which chronicled screenwriter Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.

  • Journey To The Centre Of The Earth [1959]Journey To The Centre Of The Earth | DVD | (30/06/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

In this 1959 adaptation of the Jules Verne novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, James Mason plays Professor Oliver Lindenbrook, a scientist hoping to find the world's core. He leads his unusual party on an expedition to the centre of the earth, by way of a volcano in Iceland. On the way, they encounter enormous mushrooms and giant prehistoric monsters. Produced by Michael Todd with then-spectacular special effects, the story was modernised to suit 1950s sensibilities and graced by a suitably outlandish Bernard Herrmann score. Mason gives this class, while Arlene Dahl and Diane Baker are the romantic interests. And Pat Boone is more palatable than you might expect as a secondary lead. You can watch this with your children and not be bored, and they will surely love it. --Rochelle O'Gorman
