Season 1 Created by and starring filmmaker Lena Dunham, Girls takes a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early 20s. The girls, having lived in New York for a couple of years are still not sure what they want from boys, from each other, from themselves... and things don't seem to be getting any clearer. Season 2 Following the urban adventures of a group of 20-something women, the series focuses on Hannah Horvath (Dunham) and her complicated web of NYC friends, ex-friends, boyfriends, and ex-boyfriends. This season, Hannah forges ahead with her dream of being a bestselling author and even starts to earn a little cash, but her enthusiasm is tempered by the responsibility she feels for her now-ex Adam (Adam Driver), convalescing after his S1-finale accident. Let down by work and still lonely after calling things off with Charlie, Marnie (Allison Williams) needs her best friend and former roommate more than ever, but lingering awkwardness and some surprising turns only drive a wedge further between them. Meanwhile, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) meets her new inlaws and attempts to live the married life, and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) gives Ray (Alex Karpovsky) another chance at a relationship. The girls may have their ups and downs, but the show's raw poignancy and fresh humor remain constant. And Season 2 of Girls is as addictive as ever. Season 3 Following the misadventures of a group of 20-something friends in NYC, the series centres on Hannah Horvath (Lena Dunham) and her mess of anxieties, insecurities and uncertainty as she approaches her mid-20s. In Season 3, Hannah is now in a committed relationship with Adam (Adam Driver), and the two are settling into a newfound domesticity in her apartment. Hannah is also working on rehabilitating her writing career and concentrating on delivering her eBook to her eccentric publisher. Meanwhile, Marnie (Allison Williams) is adjusting to life after a sudden and traumatic breakup with Charlie and meticulously working to achieve the life she feels she deserves. Nearing graduation, newly single Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) masterminds a plan to create a healthy (at least on paper) balance between partying and her studies. And, continuing her streak of disrupting the lives of those around her, Jessa (Jemima Kirke) resurfaces and strikes up an ambiguous friendship with a flamboyant father figure. Over this season's 12 episodes, the friendships between the girls are more volatile than ever, proving that female friendship is its own kind of romance. As always, love, life, sex and death can all interrupt the circuitous path to adulthood - and will arrive when you're least prepared. Season 4 Lena Dunham returns for the fourth season of Girls, the Emmy®- and Golden Globe-winning comedy series that follows the misadventures of a group of 20-something friends in and out of NYC. This season finds the girls tentatively edging towards maturity as they take on new personas in new worlds. As the season begins, Hannah (Dunham) leaves New York to attend the prestigious Iowa Writers' Workshop in the hopes of becoming a more serious writer, while confronting uncertainty in her relationship with Adam (Adam Driver). Meanwhile, back in New York, Marnie (Allison Williams) pursues a music career while balancing her professional and romantic relationship with Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach); Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) graduates and begins interviewing for jobs, while sorting out her relationship with Ray (Alex Karpovsky); and Jessa (Jemima Kirke) is trying out sobriety through AA, though her ability to stir up drama remains undiminished. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, this season's 10 episodes offer up some unexpected twists, as the girls of Girls continue to hunt for success creatively, professionally and romantically in New York City and beyond. Guests this season include Richard E. Grant (Doctor Who) as Jessa's rehab friend Jasper; Rita Wilson (The Good Wife) as Marnie's mom Evie; John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) as Hannah's editor/publisher David; Gaby Hoffmann (You Can Count on Me) as Adam's sister Caroline; and others. Season 5 Lena Dunham returns for the highly anticipated fifth season of Girls, the award-winning hit comedy series that follows the assorted humiliations and triumphs of a group of girls in their mid-20s each facing new challenges in life and love this season. As Season 5 begins, Hannah is, for the moment, putting her writing ambitions aside, continuing to work as a teacher alongside new boyfriend (and refreshingly nice guy) Fran a relationship which her friends urge her not to screw up. Meanwhile, Marnie micro-manages her upstate wedding to her musical partner Desi, but upon returning from the honeymoon, begins to realize she needs more space, literally and figuratively. Jessa, working towards becoming a therapist, tries to stay on the straight and narrow, while managing a budding relationship. And Shoshanna, who makes a brief return to the U.S. for Marnie's wedding, is thriving at her new job in Japan, where she flirts with her boss despite her long-distance relationship with Scott back home. Honest and uproarious, with unexpected surprise turns, Girls' fifth season promises to maintain the series' place as one of the most talked-about shows on television. Season 6 Lena Dunham stars in the sixth and final season of Girls, HBO's hit comedy that follows the assorted humiliations and triumphs of a group of 20-something friends in NYC. Season 6 picks up six months after the end of S5, with Hannah (Dunham), enjoying new success as a writer after her participation in The Moth last season, getting a plum writing assignment that could dramatically change the course of her life. Marnie (Allison Williams), now in a relationship with Ray (Alex Karpovsky), seeks to maintain her independence post-divorce from Desi, but when her actions veer into self-absorption, it may end up making her current relationship unsustainable. Now also a couple, Jessa and Adam (Jemima Kirke and Adam Driver) decide to embark on a creative project to channel their passions, which could become a source of contention. And Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) finds herself professionally on the right path in a new job at a marketing agency, though personally she realizes that her friendships may be holding her back. Patrick Tam's dazzling take on the classic wuxia adventure Eureka Entertainment to release THE SWORD, Patrick Tam's dazzling take on the classic wuxia adventure. Presented for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK from a brand new 2K restoration. Available from 18 November 2024 as part of the Eureka Classics range, the Limited edition release of 2000 copies will exclusively feature an O-card slipcase, and a collector's booklet. Best known as a key contributor to the Hong Kong New Wave as the director of My Heart is That Eternal Rose and the editor of Wong Kar-wai's Days of Being Wild and Ashes of Time, Patrick Tam began his filmmaking career with The Sword: a love letter to the wuxia genre starring Adam Cheng (Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain). Believing that he is in possession of a cursed blade, the legendary swordsman Hua Qian Shu (Tien Feng, King Boxer) has retreated from the martial arts world to live in peaceful seclusion. However, his retirement has done nothing to dampen his reputation; a young warrior, Li Mak-jan (Cheng), wishes to challenge the master in order to test his own sword-fighting skill. But as Li searches for the reclusive Hua Qian Shu so that he might face him in combat, he finds himself entangled with old lovers and new rivals. Soon, it becomes apparent that the old master's sword really might be cursed and will, perhaps, bring nothing but tragedy to those who seek to wield it. After a period of dormancy, wuxia films resurged in the 1980s as the likes of Duel to the Death, Bastard Swordsman and Tsui Hark's Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain rejected the realist approach adopted by kung fu cinema in the previous decade. Eureka Classics is proud to present Patrick Tam's The Sword one of the earliest and best pictures to emerge from this wuxia revival for the first time on Blu-ray in the UK from a brand new 2K restoration.

Halloween is one of the great modern horror films, but as a franchise its track record has been spotty at best, painfully bad at worst. Halloween H2O: Twenty Years Later, directed by horror vet Steve Miner (Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3, House), won't displace John Carpenter's original but it might help you forget the films in between. Miner certainly has: the film begins as if sequels 3 through 6 never happened. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising her role for the first time in almost two decades) faked her death and is now a single mom and headmistress of an exclusive California private school. She's also a secret alcoholic who lives in fear of her homicidal brother-bogeyman Michael Myers. Guess who decides to show up for a family reunion? The film begins with classic horror-movie exposition (the deserted college campus, Michael's escape, Laurie's waking nightmares) accomplished with some humour and style, but it's all set up for the second half, a driving roller coaster of stalk-and-slash thrills. There's little of the self-conscious genre referencing of Scream and at times the film is a little far-fetched--it is a slasher movie about a knife-wielding homicidal maniac who won't stay dead, after all--but Curtis transforms Laurie from a shrieking victim into an empowered, determined horror-movie heroine who's learned a thing or two from the previous films. Adam Arkin, Josh Hartnett, and TV cutie Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek) co-star, and the script received uncredited polish from Scream writer Kevin Williamson; Curtis's mom, Janet Leigh, pops up in a cameo. --Sean Axmaker

  • Firefly - The Complete Series [2003]Firefly - The Complete Series | DVD | (19/04/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £34.99

Much praised and much missed after its premature cancellation, Firefly is the first SF TV series to be conceived by Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy and cocreator of Angel. Set five centuries in the future, it is a show where the mysterious personal pasts of the crew of the tramp spaceship Serenity continually surface. In fact, it's a Western in space where the losers in a Civil War are heading out to a barren frontier. Mal Reynolds is a man embittered by the war, yet whose love of his comrades perpetually dents his cynicism--even in the 14 episodes that exist we see him warm to the bubbly young mechanic Kaylee, the preacher Book, the idealistic doctor Simon, even to the often demented River, Simon's sister, the psychic result of malign experiments. Firefly is also about adult emotional relationships, for example Kaylee's crush on Simon, the happy marriage of Mal's second officer Zoe and the pilot Wash, the disastrous erotic stalemate between Mal and the courtesan Inara. Individual episodes deal with capers going vaguely wrong, or threats narrowly circumvented; character and plot arcs were starting to emerge when the show was cancelled. Fortunately, the spin-off movie Serenity is planned; and in the meantime, what there is of Firefly is a show to marvel at, both for its tight writing and ensemble acting, and the idiocy of the executives who cancelled it. On the DVD: Firefly on DVD is presented in anamorphic 1.78:1 with Dolby Surround Sound. It includes commentaries on six episodes by various writers, directors, designers and cast members as well as featurettes on the conception of the show and the design of the spaceship Serenity, four deleted scenes, a gag reel, and Joss Whedon singing the show's theme tune, more or less. One of the things that emerges from all of this is how committed to the project everyone involved with it was, and is--unusually, you end up caring as much for the cast and crew as for the characters. The discs have subtitles in English and Spanish and the option of listening to the soundtrack dubbed into Spanish or French. --Roz Kaveney

Don't just think of The Wedding Singer as an Adam Sandler comedy--though it most certainly is that. But also think of it as the tip of the wave of the 1980s nostalgia craze that followed on the heels of the 1970s nostalgia craze. Set in the post-disco, new wave era, the film tells the story of Robbie Hart (Sandler), the king of small-town wedding-band singers, who once dreamt of being a rock star. But his contentment with life shatters when his fiancée stands him up at the altar. After wallowing in self-pity (by musically attacking the next wedding couple he serenades) and swearing off women, he helps a new friend, Julia (Drew Barrymore), get ready for her impending nuptials--only to find himself falling in love with her. If you're a Sandler fan, you'll enjoy him as an actual adult, though a wise-cracking one. And dig all those kooky 80s reference jokes and that greatest-hits-of-early-MTV soundtrack. --Marshall Fine
