Hitler - A Career chronicles the life of Adolf Hitler from the German perspective with colour and B&W footage taken from the German military archives. Some of the footage is previously unseen and the programme gives an insight into how Hitler seduced most of the German nation into blind obedience. From the influence of the Teutonic knights and Prussian warriors the documentary explains how Hitler allowed Germany to awake and then sleepwalk into disaster.
And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python's first feature, is a reworking of their best skits from the first two seasons of the TV series. Originally made for the US market (where the show had yet to be aired), it was shot on film outside the usual studio sets ("Nudge Nudge", for example, is set in a tavern filled with passers-by). The writing and performances are fine and the film is packed with some of their best bits: "How to Avoid Being Seen", " Hell's Grannies", "Blackmail", "The Lumberjack Song" and "The Upper Class Twit of the Year", among others. Many of the sketches have been shortened, however, and the loss of the overly bright video sheen (the film has a muddy, dull look to it) and the invigorating presence of a live audience leaves the film sluggish at times. They're still feeling out the possibilities of the feature length, which they conquered with their next movie, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974). --Sean Axmaker
Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph Of The Will may be the most controversial film ever made both despised and admired. A shamelessly biased unabashedly subjective rendering of the infamous 1934 Nuremberg rallies Triumph Of The Will was commissioned by Hitler himself from the director. An essential document of Hitler the orator and mesmeriser of the masses this stunning documentary revels in the monumental architecture of Albert Speer the formal precision of marching cadres and above all the almost religious exhaltation of Hitler as the mystical personification of the dreams and ideals of his people captured kinetically with a mastery of technique that is both breathtaking and sinister.
Triumph of the Will is one of the most important films ever made, not because it documents evil--more watchable examples are being made today. And not as a historical example of blind propaganda--those (much shorter) movies are merely laughable now. No, Riefenstahl's masterpiece--and it is a masterpiece, politics aside--combines the strengths of documentary and propaganda into a single, overwhelmingly powerful visual force. Riefenstahl was hired by the Reich to create an eternal record of the 1934 rally at Nuremberg, and that's exactly what she does. You might not become a Nazi after watching her film, but you will understand too clearly how Germany fell under Hitler's spell. The early crowd scenes remind one of nothing so much as Beatles concert footage (if only their fans were so well behaved!).Like the Fascists it monumentalises, Triumph of the Will overlooks its own weaknesses--at nearly two hours, the speeches tend to drone on, and the repeated visual motifs are a little over-hypnotic, especially for modern viewers. But the occasional iconic vista (banners lining the streets of Nuremberg, Hitler parting a sea of 200,000 party members standing at attention) will electrify anyone into wakefulness. --Grant Balfour, Amazon.com

After being commissioned by the 1936 Olympic Committee to create a feature film of the Berlin Olympics Riefenstahl shot a documentary that celebrates the human body by combining the poetry of bodies in motion with close-ups of athletes in the heat of competition. Includes the marathon men's diving and American track star Jesse Owens' sprint races at the 1936 Olympic Games. The production tends to glorify the young male body and some say expresses the Nazi attitude toward athletic prowess. Includes the lighting of the torch at the stadium and Adolf Hitler looking on in amazement as Jesse Owens wins an unprecedented four Gold Medals.

The Liberation of Auschwitz Etched deeply into the pages of history, Auschwitz conjures up images of death, torture and unimaginable human suffering. At the time of release only 18 minutes of the footage contained within this DVD had been seen in the west; despite it being used as damning prosecution evidence at the Nuremburg Trials. Recorded from January to February 1945 by a Soviet film crew attached to the 1st Ukrainian Front, the programme tells the story of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp. Dachau & Sachsenhausen Whilst Hitler sought the answers to his “Jewish problem”, more and more centres of containment sprung up throughout Nazi occupied Europe. Two such camps were Dachau and Sachsenhausen, and although perhaps not such recognisable names as Auschwitz, they were no less crucial in the persecution and extermination ofthe European Jews. Ghetto Theresienstatd Between 1941 and 1945 the small fortress town of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia became a transit point to the death camps in the east for thousands of Czech, German, Austrian and Dutch Jews. All those deported to Theresienstadt were led to believe it was an “end camp” from which they would travel no further. They were promised a comfortable and peaceful life in the “Reich home for the aged” and were hoodwinked into signing over to the S.S. all of their properties and assets. The Yellow Star - The Persecution of the Jews in Europe 1933-1945 This Oscar™ nominated documentary serves not only as a remembrance but a lesson and a warning for the future. It follows the plight of Europe’s Jews during the terrifying period from 1933 until the final defeat of the Third Reich in 1945. Never before had the world seen such contempt for human life on such a grand scale with the murder of an estimated 6 million Jews with countless others persecuted. Ravensbruck & Buchenwald Ravensbruck: Women from more than 20 countries were incarcerated between 1939 and 1945 in the Ravensbruck concentration camp in Germany. They were subjected to gross maltreatment, humiliation and some were tortured to death all in the name of the Third Reich.Buchenwald: After being established in the German town of Weimar in the summer of 1937, Buchenwald developed into one of the largest concentration camps in Germany, with approximately 250,000 inmates fromsome 35 different countries. More than 50,000 were to die during the reign of terror by torture, deliberate starvation and systematic culling. Majdanek This rare and stark documentary graphically portrays the methodical murder, starvation and torture of an estimated 2 million innocent victims and demonstrates the frightening efficiency of the German death camp. Also captured here on film are rare scenes from a Russian post-war tribunal, where survivors are seen giving evidence against captured SS officers and camp officials, this evidence was often to result in the conviction and execution of those standing accused.
In the Autumn of 1940, the decision was made by Hitler to construct a base of operations from which Operation Barbarossa could be planned and instigated. This almost impenetrable series of structures, located in the Masurian woods near the town of Rastenburg, welcomed the Feuhrer for the first time on 23rd June 1941.Although Hitler had a number of similar bases built throughout Europe, the Wolf's Lair was by far his preferred location, spending a total of over 800 days ther during a 3-and-a-half year period. In that time, a number of key decisions were made there that drove the Eastern campaign against Russia, as well as a failed assassination attempt on the Feuhrer himself. This Special Edition 2 Disc DVD helps to reconstruct the story of this extremely secretive and fascinating centre of Nazioperations, from its original design and construction in the early 40s to its continued use by Hitler and eventual demise asthe war came to a close. For the first time on DVD, actual witnesses are interviewed and reveal their personal stories aboutHitler, giving an insight into some of the planning behind the infamous Eastern Campaign. Also featured is an in-depthanalysis of the attempted assassination on Hitler by German Army Officer Claus von Stauffenberg, whose exploits wererecently portrayed on the big screen in the film Valkyrie.
The North Atlantic was the main battlefield of the German submarines. From the beginning of 1942 the Anglo-American convoys ran on the northern route between Iceland and the ice-free Russian port of Murmansk and Archangelsk. The disruption or destruction of these huge supplies of materials was one of the main tasks of the German U - Boats. Aircraft Carriers Cruisers Destroyers Corvettes and countless smaller Patrol vessels were involved in battles in the Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean and played their part in the outcome of the fighting.
On the 20th April 1939 one of the biggest and most elaborate birthday parades to ever be staged in Germany was about to take place. With the day already declared a national holiday by the German government two days before, hundreds of thousands of people came from throughout Germany to the Reich capital to join the celebrations and mark the 50th birthday of Adolf Hitler. With thousands in attendance, including a selection of prominant figures and over 20,000 official guests, Hitler used this opportunity to show off his military strength and issue a warning to the Western powers. This DVD shows Berling preparing itself for Hitler's birthday parade in 1939 using a selection of rare archive footage, parts of which have been painstakingly restored and can now be presented in colour for the first time. Several extracts used in this documentary were taken by members of the public which have only just been discovered and are presented here for the very first time. These eyewitness films help to show an extremely important and personal documentation on the events of that day, five months before the outbreak of World War II.
On the fronts were many different types of tanks assault guns and self-propelled guns in use. Light tanks of the type I and II medium tanks of the type III IV & PAN THER and the heavy battle tanks of the type: TIGER KNIGSTIGER etc. as well as numerous assault guns in different versions were in operation. The Tank divisions of the Wehrmacht and their support units came to use on all sections of the front. During the 1st World War tanks were used to support the infantry. They were linked on the battlefield with the slow infantry units to protect them and give them artillery support. The mass use of tanks gave a sinister influence on the outcome of events.

The main task of the Luftwaffe was to support the combat units of the German army. The types and varieties of aircraft and the equipment and weaponry they carried had been developed specifically for these needs. Besides a powerful fighter weapon numerous Fighter and Hunter aircraft units were formed. The Ju 87 (Stuka) Ju 88 Me 110 (Bf 110) amongst others formed the core of the fast battle groups while the He 111 was used as the standard medium range bomber. The nations involved in the Second World War 1939 to 1945 fought for the airspace over Europe and the Pacific Ocean. It was a deadly race for air supremacy. Only those who held it could hope for victory.
