In 1962's On the Beat, Norman Wisdom's Pitkin, the most famous incarnation of his riotous buffoon character, is dreaming of something better as usual. Pitkin wants to follow in his father's footsteps and become a policeman, but being decidedly on the short side, has to settle for washing police cars. Of course it's not long before Norman is impersonating an officer of the law. Wisdom also plays his nemesis here, the German General Schreiber, as well as the chief suspect in a series of jewel robberies which only Pitkin's chaotic antics can solve. Terence Alexander effectively reprises his character from The Square Peg (1958), and Wisdom regular David Lodge, previously seen costarring in The Bulldog Breed (1960), is also on hand, though otherwise the supporting cast is less stellar than before. By the time of 1955's Man of the Moment, Wisdom was firmly established as Britain's favourite movie comedian, his shy, helpful and good-natured "gump" character forever unintentionally causing catastrophe in the great tradition of Charlie Chaplin. However, while Chaplin ventured into politics in Modern Times (1936) for satirical purposes, when Norman's minor civil servant here accidentally becomes the UK delegate at a conference in Geneva the emphasis is on farce and pratfalls. The plot sees Norman sticking up for the rights of the fictional kingdom of Tawaki against less-than-honest government interests, while his new-found status brings the attention of the ladies, including the return of his Trouble in Store (1953) costar Lana Morris. Continuing his collaboration with veteran director John Paddy Carstairs, the film is a polished laughter machine that continues to entertain. --Gary S Dalkin

  • The Burning [1981]The Burning | DVD | (04/11/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The scenario of this notorious splatter movie may be familiar- a group of teenage-counsellors at a lakeside summer camp face the vengeance of a twisted psychotic - but the nail-biting tension and graphic gore sequences of this bloody shocker will certainly not be. Described as 'a searing pulse-pounding bolt of energy sure to shock even the most hardened gore-addict' The Burning not only boasts the directorial talents of Tony Maylam - Director of The Recent SF/ Horror smash hit 'Spilt Second' - but also special effects by the genius of gore Tom Savini music by Rick Wakeman and a special appearance by 'Raising Arizona' star Holly Hunter. Long considered one of the goriest of horror films. The Burning the subject of numerous prosecutions has been unavailable since 1983. It is seemed to be an extremely frightening and nerve jolting movie.

  • Race to Witch Mountain [Blu-ray]Race to Witch Mountain | Blu Ray | (31/10/2011) from £9.43   |  Saving you £13.56 (59.00%)   |  RRP £22.99

Loosely based on Alexander Key's novel Escape to Witch Mountain, Race to Witch Mountain is not so much a remake of the 1975 film Escape to Witch Mountain as an entirely new film based on some key plot points from the former film. When two innocent-looking teens appear in Jack Bruno's (Dwayne Johnson) cab and tell him "we must travel in that direction", Jack thinks it's a bit strange but shrugs it off and starts driving. Soon they're being followed and chased off the road, but is it Jack's past catching up with him or something much larger? Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) reluctantly confess that they are aliens from another planet, but Jack refuses to accept their statement until Sara starts moving things with her mind and Seth slips through the body of the car and deflects the SUV that's pursuing them. Sara and Seth tell Jack that they must recover their crashed spaceship in order to save earth from being taken over by aliens, so Jack takes them to see Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino); a scientist who he met by chance and who believes in the possible existence of extra-terrestrials. While the four are initially wary of one another, Dr. Friedman provides some valuable contacts and they begin trusting one another out of sheer necessity. Soon they're battling secret government agencies, heavily armed personnel, and even a cybernetic Siphon (which looks a lot like a Cylon from Battlestar Galactica) in a desperate attempt to gain access to the heavily fortified Witch Mountain and the crashed spacecraft. Action-packed car chases dominate the film (a bit excessively, in this reviewer's opinion), but the acting and chemistry between actors is good as is the suspense and intrigue. Rated PG due to sequences of action and violence, frightening and dangerous situations, and some thematic elements. (Ages 9 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

  • Into The Arms Of Strangers: Stories Of The Kindertransport [2000]Into The Arms Of Strangers: Stories Of The Kindertransport | DVD | (28/06/2013) from £21.02   |  Saving you £-3.03 (-16.80%)   |  RRP £17.99

Winner of the 2001 Oscar for Best Documentary, Into The Arms Of Strangers attempts to expose and understand one of the forgotten travesties of WWII. While the evacuation of British children during the Second World War has become the stuff of legend, the rescue of 10,000 Jewish children from Germany is less well known. This programme of "kindertransport" was to provide a vital escape route to England for many children, but would also leave many heartbroken families behind to face an uncertain future at the hands of the Nazis. Told mainly in the first person by those who made the journey, this American produced documentary is a moving testament to the most innocent victims--one and a half million children perished in the Holocaust. We may have become used to tales of Nazi's brutality in the 21st century, but it is always shocking to see the emotions that still run deep for those who experienced and survived these events first hand. As the story--narrated by Dame Judi Dench--unfolds it becomes clear that although the kindertransport was one of the great humanitarian efforts of the 20th century it was not without its flaws, none more so than the internment and repatriation of many of the evacuees that followed once war with Germany was declared. A very real historical document, Into The Arms Of Strangers is highly recommended for those looking to delve a little deeper into the travesties of War. --Phil Udell

  • Prokofiev - CinderellaProkofiev - Cinderella | DVD | (24/09/2003) from £28.55   |  Saving you £-0.56 (N/A%)   |  RRP £27.99

Perrault's timeless fairy tale of the mistreated waif turned princess has inspired a number of composers and choreographers since its first incarnation as a major ballet by Petipa in 1893. But none has gained the popularity of the version set by Frederick Aston for Sadler's Wells Royal ballet in 1948. It was the first full-length ballet devised by a British choreographer.Though the role of Cinderella was danced by Moira Shearer at the premier it soon became a signature piece for Margot Fonteyn and a mainstay of the company's repertoire. In addition to providing the choreography Ashton also gave himself a plum role as one of the Ugly Sisters and appears on this video in tandem with Kenneth MacMillan another celebrated British choreographer en travesti.

  • Robbie The Reindeer In Hooves Of Fire [2000]Robbie The Reindeer In Hooves Of Fire | DVD | (27/11/2000) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

Robbie the Reindeer is as short as many of the made-for-TV classics that have preceded it. However, so much action, zippy dialogue and witty visual puns have been packed into its 29-minute running time that you'd swear it was longer. The content of the film, like many new animations and cartoons, is geared slightly in favour of older audiences, because of its sexual innuendos and adult comedy, but the kids will love the slapstick comedy and loveable characters. Robbie's father is another stop-motion favourite, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and pop is keen to see his loveable--but lazy--son follow in his famous hoof prints. The adult theme continues in the shape of the storyline, which was actually inspired more by Rocky than by Rudolph. As in Rocky, there's a supportive female (Donner) and a crusty trainer (Old Jingle). Together they help Robbie get in shape for the Reindeer Games, where he'll have the chance to show Santa whether he has the right stuff or not. Fans of Aardman Animations should appreciate the detailed animation and clever humour. The cream of Britain's comic crop provides the voices, including Jane Horrocks as Donner. Robbie Williams narrates the story, and Mark Knopfler provides the music. --Kathleen C Fennessy, Amazon.com
