It's 1974 and fifteen-year-old Danny is our guide through the ups and downs of life with the Baker family. Dad Fred, known to all and sundry as ˜Spud', is a proud south London docker with a penchant for rackets, fiddles and schemes, hopefully ˜nice and tasty' ones. Wife Bet loves him deeply but longs for the family to go ˜straight', and do daft things like pay taxes and put money in the electricity meter instead of always trying to scam it. With eldest daughter Sharon's wedding looming, the docks facing closure and a switch to the dreaded ˜containerisation' putting thousands of dockers out of work, times are challenging. So too are Danny's attempts to get closer to the opposite sex. Full of humour, warmth and drama, Cradle To Grave is based on actual events and characters.

  • Star Trek 8 : First Contact [1996]Star Trek 8 : First Contact | DVD | (31/07/2000) from £5.24   |  Saving you £10.75 (205.15%)   |  RRP £15.99

Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and this one (number eight in the popular series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race. Time travel, a dazzling new Enterprise, and capable direction by Next Generation alumnus Jonathan Frakes makes this one rank with the best of the bunch. Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his able crew travel back in time to Earth in the year 2063, where they hope to ensure that the inventor of warp drive (played by James Cromwell) will successfully carry out his pioneering warp-drive flight and precipitate Earth's "first contact" with an alien race. A seductive Borg queen (Alice Krige) holds Lt. Data (Brent Spiner) hostage in an effort to sabotage the Federation's preservation of history, and the captive android finds himself tempted by the queen's tantalising sins of the flesh. Sharply conceived to fit snugly into the burgeoning Star Trek chronology, First Contact leads to a surprise revelation that marks an important historical chapter in the ongoing mission "to boldly go where no one has gone before". --Jeff Shannon

  • New Worlds [DVD]New Worlds | DVD | (19/05/2014) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

A lavish new drama mini-series set in England and America in the 1680's from the makers of the award winning The Devil's Whore Elizabeth I and The White Queen. Starring Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones) Jamie Dornan (The Fall) Alice Englert (Beautiful Creatures) Freya Mavor (The White Queen) Jeremy Northam (The Tudors). New Worlds is a gripping story of love loss and the price of freedom. In England the restored monarchy of Charles II has betrayed its promises and reverted to tyranny. Behind the decadence of the Court a terror machine is repressing the freedoms won for the people during England's bloody civil war. In America the tentacles of state terror reach the colonists but they themselves are ruthlessly stalking their claim to the territories occupied by the Native American Indians in a chilling echo of the tyrannical behaviour they seek to escape. Against this turbulent backdrop four young people - Beth Hope Abe and Ned - struggle to choose between love and ideals in the harsh reality of the changing world. Special Features: Includes Four Featurettes Cast and Crew Interviews

  • Young Guns [1988]Young Guns | DVD | (18/06/2001) from £5.49   |  Saving you £10.50 (191.26%)   |  RRP £15.99

Part of what was touted as a late-1980s revival of Westerns (and you can see how long that lasted), this good-looking, empty-brained film was like a spurs-and-chaps version of a Joel Schumacher movie, filled with pretty faces, prettier imagery, and absolutely no new ideas. Young Guns sees an idiotically grinning Emilio Estevez cast as Billy the Kid, who slowly accumulates a gang of Brat Pack buddies (Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland, Dermot Mulroney) and fashions them into a group of male models with six-guns. The action is confused and the script is trite, though Terence Stamp is intriguing as the old reprobate who helps the gang get its act together. This is followed by an even worse sequel. --Marshall Fine

  • The Graduate 50th Anniversary Edition [DVD] [1967]The Graduate 50th Anniversary Edition | DVD | (14/08/2017) from £6.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Few films have defined a generation as much as The Graduate did. The alienation, the nonconformity, the intergenerational romance, the blissful Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack--they all served to lob a cultural grenade smack into the middle of 1967 America, ultimately making the film the third most profitable up to that time. Seen from a later perspective, its radical chic has dimmed a bit, yet it's still a joy to see Dustin Hoffman's bemused Benjamin and Anne Bancroft's deliciously decadent, sardonic Mrs Robinson. The script by Buck Henry and Calder Willingham is still offbeat and dryly funny and Mike Nichols, who won an Oscar for his direction, has just the right, light touch. --Anne Hurley, Amazon.com
