From BAFTA-winning director Philippa Lowthorpe and Golden Globe-nominated screenwriter Emma Frost, comes this exhilarating adaptation of Daphne du Maurier's classic gothic novel, Jamaica Inn. Spirited Mary Yellan (Jessica Brown Findlay) finds herself alone in the world when her mother passes away. She is forced to move to the isolated Jamaica Inn, deep in the heart of the windswept Cornish moors, where she enters a world where nothing is as it first appears. Her Aunt Patience (Joanne Whalley) is a shell of the carefree woman she was, firmly under the spell of her domineering husband, Joss (Sean Harris). Joss is the head of a violent smuggling gang and when he isn't smuggling, he is drinking heavily to forget all he has seen and done. Then there is the enigmatic Jem (Matthew McNulty), her uncle's brother and therefore not to be trusted in Mary's mind although her heart may be saying otherwise... Life at Jamaica Inn challenges Mary's black-and-white sense of right and wrong as she finds herself living among smugglers in a lawless land. When she thinks she has witnessed a murder, Mary wonders at what cost she will stay silent. Special Features: Behind the scenes Interviews with cast and crew
Lucifer Morningstar has decided he's had enough of being the dutiful servant in Hell and decides to spend some time on Earth to better understand humanity. He settles in Los Angeles - the City of Angels.
Season Four sizzles with fiendishly clever comebacks. The charismatic, handsome Lucifer Morningstar returns, resurrected after Season Three's wicked cliff-hanger. His unofficial partner in crime-solving and affairs of the heart, LAPD detective Chloe Decker, returns from an extended vacation taken after she saw Lucifer's devil face for the first time and realized he was, in fact, exactly the man he always claimed to be. New to the series but not to the Lord of Hell is Eve, his old flame, the original sinner. Her charms are as tempting to Lucifer now as the serpent's big, red apple was to her back in the day. Does she want revenge for her expulsion from Eden all those years ago, or something else entirely? Personal demons will be conquered, and crimes will be solved. But will things ever be right with Deckerstar again? Only time and 10 scandalous new episodes will tell.
Given that Resident Evil is a Paul Anderson movie based on a computer game which was itself highly derivative (especially of George A Romero and James Cameron films), it's probably unfair to complain that it hasn't got an original idea or moment in its entire running time. In the early 1980s, Italian schlock films such as Zombie Flesh Eaters and Zombie Creeping Flesh tried to cram in as many moments restaged from American originals as possible, strung together by silly characters wandering between monster attacks. This is a much-improved, edited, photographed and directed version of the same gambit. As amnesiac Milla Jovovich remembers amazing kung fu skills and anti-globalist Eric Mabius mutters about evil corporations, a gang of clichéd soldiers with nary a distinguishing feature between them (except for Michelle Rodriguez as a secondary tough chick) are trapped in an underground scientific compound at the mercy of a tyrannical computer--which manifests as a smug little-girl-o-gram--fending off flesh-eating zombies (though gore fans will be disappointed by the film's need to stay within the limits of the 15 certificate) and CGI mutants, not to mention the ever-popular zombie dogs. It's tolerably action-packed, but zips past its borrowings (Aliens, Cube, Deep Blue Sea) without adding anything that future schlock pictures will want to imitate. On the DVD: Resident Evil on disc has the expected trailers, both teaser and theatrical; a half-hour making-of; zombie make-up tests; featurettes on music (with Marilyn Manson), production design and costume. A lively commentary track features Anderson, Jovovich, Rodriguez and producer/zombie Jeremy Bolt--Jovovich upbraids Anderson for talking about different gradings of film stock over her nude scene and everyone else talks about how much she hurt them by punching them out during action sequences. Anderson mentions an alternate commentary track with visual effects designer Richard Yuricich, but it isn't included. --Kim Newman

LUCIFER is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, Lucifer Morningstar abandoned his throne and retired to Los Angeles, where he has teamed up with LAPD detective Chloe Decker to take down criminals. Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer has a way of manipulating people into confessing their deepest, darkest secrets, which helps Chloe deliver justice. But Lucifer quickly discovered that Chloe makes him vulnerable. When he's around her, the devil can bleed like anyone else. It's a truly scary realization that doesn't sit well with his best friend, Mazikeen aka Maze, a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman. Maze wants nothing more than to leave Los Angeles and get back to her life in Hell, but Lucifer is having one helluva good time with the mortals and she is not about to leave him behind. At the end of Season One, Chloe watched Lucifer die, only to come back to life, causing more confusion over who and what he really is. Meanwhile, her estranged husband, Dan, also an LAPD detective, comes clean about his involvement in a corrupt case - jeopardizing not only his job, but also their relationship. In Season Two, Lucifer and his brother angel, Amenadiel, who've been sparring over Lucifer's resistance to returning to the underworld, will now be brought back together for one common goal - to find their mother, who's escaped Hell. After all, Lucifer doesn't take after his dad, so the parent he does resemble is sure to be quite terrifying. With mom on the loose, Dr. Linda - who's become not only a therapist, but also a confidante to Lucifer, Amenadiel and Maze - will surely have a lot of advice to dole out. And, by the time she's done with them, she may need a therapist of her own. L.A. is hotter than ever in this one-hour drama from Jerry Bruckheimer Television, based on the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment's Vertigo imprint.

This first film adaptation of a John Grisham novel is a crackerjack popcorn movie that satisfies even though it radically changes the last half of the book. The novel's dynamic setup is intact: Mitch McDeere, a hot law graduate (a well-suited Tom Cruise), finds a dream job in a luxurious Memphis law firm. His superiors (Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook) provide Mitch and his young wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn), with a house and plenty of money in exchange for lots of work, and maybe something more. Soon FBI agents (including a bald Ed Harris) encircle Mitch, telling him his firm has a sinister secret, forcing Mitch into a heck of a pickle. How Mitch deals with his situation is where the book and movie differ, yet by the time Mitch is running from bad guys with suitcase in hand, the movie delivers Grisham's goods. For Sydney Pollack's film, Mitch is more confrontational and heroic. Plot aside, the care Pollack put into this fair-weather thriller is unimpeachable, as is his cast. There is hardly a better all-star cast in any 1990s thriller, from Hackman and Harris in key roles to actors in smaller parts, sometimes with only a scene or two. Standouts include David Strathairn as Mitch's wayward brother, Wilford Brimley as the head of security, film producer Jerry Weintraub as an angry client, Gary Busey as a private investigator and Holly Hunter in a delicious, Oscar-nominated supporting role as Busey's most loyal of secretaries. The cast seems to have had as much fun making the film as we do watching it. It's slick Hollywood product, but first-rate all the way. --Doug Thomas
Guy Pearce stars in this innovative thriller that begins with a crime and then goes back through time to trace its origins.
A team-building weekend in Eastern Europe goes badly wrong for the employees of a weapons company.
Dynamic drama series set in Toronto Canada in the 1890s. William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson - Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye; Soul Food) is a young detective who uses progressive new forensic techniques such as fingerprinting and trace evidence to solve some of the city''s most gruesome murders. Fiddler on the Roof arrived in cinemas in 1971, seven years after the Sheldon Harnick/Jerry Bock musical about Jewish life in a pre-Revolution Russian village first gripped Broadway. Based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, with its potent mixture of sentiment and religious and historical context, it remains one of the most popular shows of the modern age. With the help of an outstanding performance from Topol as Tevye--the milkman with five daughters kicking at the constraints of tradition--Norman Jewison's captivating film retains a moving intimacy in its portrayal of relationships in changing times. But it also stretches the possibilities of location shooting--in this case the countryside of the former Yugoslavia--further than any musical movie before or since. The villagers are played by the inhabitants of the area, lending a poignant realism to the vibrant crowd scenes. And the cinematography is spectacular, with Jewison's clever use of distance generating an epic feel that helps to explain the story's continuing resonance and popularity. Topol's career-defining star turn is balanced by the warmth and sensitivity of the surrounding performances, particularly Norma Crane as his abrasive wife Golda. British sitcom fans will spot early appearances by Roger Lloyd Pack, and Ruth Madoc as the demonic butcher's wife, Fruma Sarah. At nearly three hours, it's a long emotional haul, but aided by some of the most beautiful songs in musical history, Jewison's Fiddler is ageless. On the DVD: Fiddler on the Roof Special Edition is presented on DVD in widescreen with a Dolby soundtrack that makes a mighty meal of John Williams' Oscar-winning musical adaptation. The most fascinating extras are a making-of documentary that shows a youthful, slightly tetchy Jewison at work, and a 2003 reminiscence in which all of his passion and feel for the piece has survived intact. He shares a commentary with Topol crammed with vivid memories and context. There is also a photographic gallery showing the resources that were used to give the film its authenticity, and Jewison reads extracts from original Aleichem stories. --Piers Ford
