This dvd features rare footage of two major events in the early life of Queen Elizabeth II. The Wedding (1947): Two years after World War II Great Britain finally had reason to rejoice at the dawn of a new era. On 20 November 1947 Princess Elizabeth married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey. This story starts with the years leading up to the wedding and covers the detailed preparations that took place including some rare footage on the making of the wedding dress. St. James's Palace was opened to the public to view the wedding presents some of which were considered to be the height of technology in the early days of a post-war Britain. The exciting events of the day itself are beautifully narrated by the quintessentially English Anna Neagle. The Coronation (1953): The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on the 2nd June 1953 was one of the first major televised events in history. This original documentary covers the beautiful procession to and from Westminster Abbey as well as the splendid display of ancient traditions and symbols which took place during the Coronation Ceremony.

  • Basic Elements With Anna Kournikova [2001]Basic Elements With Anna Kournikova | DVD | (04/06/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Tennis star Anna Kournikova might be one of the hottest names around the circuit, but whether her fitness video Basic Elements will get you up and running is another matter. Filmed more like a promotional video for both Kournikova and a fitness gadget known as the medicine ball, this can seem more like a slot on a shopping channel than a straightforward workout. The sections on warm ups, simple weights, the medicine ball, and an advanced section on the lower body are amply punctuated with shots of Kournikova on and off court. While gym instructors might certainly gain useful ideas, presented rather than created by the young tennis star, the rest of us are left a little bemused. Lying on an ordinary ball to lift weights is beyond most people as they would slide off! There is insufficient detail on the purpose of each exercise, the scope for mistakes, and above all the precision of technique. As for the token health advice which amounts to ample helpings of French toast or pancakes, and a high-fibre diet rather than a low fat one, if you really want a figure like Kournikova's don't try this at home! --Lorna V

  • Cheaters [2000]Cheaters | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

In the coda of Cheaters, John Stockwell's dramatisation of the 1995 Steinmetz school scandal, Jolie Fitch (Jena Malone) ruminates, "I learned more about the way the world really works from my nine months on the academic decathlon team than most people will learn in a lifetime". Fitch is the team leader of the crumbling inner-city school's first "academic decathlon" squad, a group of hard-working kids hopelessly outclassed by the perennial champions from a lavishly funded model school for the gifted and the rich. When a Steinmetz student discovers the question sheet for the upcoming finals, the issue isn't whether to cheat, but how. Stockwell discards easy moralising and empty platitudes for an ambiguous perspective framed by questions of privilege and prejudice. Jeff Daniels, so long the cinema's hapless nice guy, is excellent as the tireless teacher, a well-meaning idealist who struggles with his inner demons through the ordeal. Malone is refreshing as a streetwise class brain whose ambition drives the team on. Their guilt is the focus of a predatory media scandal, but it's the hypocrisy of the system and the double standards of the gatekeepers that Stockwell takes to task in his compelling drama. Some might call it cynical, but Cheaters is too sharp and smart for such an easy label. Better to call it disillusioned.--Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

  • David Cronenberg Collection - Double Horror - Shivers / Rabid [1975]David Cronenberg Collection - Double Horror - Shivers / Rabid | DVD | (06/10/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

One of David Cronenberg's most successful early films, Rabid features porn star Marilyn Chambers as a woman who becomes infected with a virus after an operation. As result she grows a kind of phallus with which she penetrates her victims as she sucks their blood and thus the disease spreads rapidly. The film displays all Cronenberg's usual horrified fascination with the human body and its sexual function. Looking back, it can be read as a kind of parable about AIDS, but it works perfectly well as an effective low-budget shocker. On the DVD: the widescreen image on the DVD is acceptable quality, as is the sound. The fairly routine extras consist of excerpts from a TV interview with Cronenberg, lasting about 10 minutes; a collection of stills from the film; some written notes by horror expert Kim Newman that give useful background, though in part reproduce what is said in the interview; full filmographies for Cronenberg and the three principal performers, including a long list of Chambers' porn credits. --Ed Buscombe
