Each tale offers a diluted moral message, yet the entire effort feels contrived and confusing. --Lynn Gibson The film that officially signalled Disney's animation renaissance and the only animated feature to receive a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Beauty and the Beast remains the yardstick by which all other animated films should be measured. It relates the story of Belle, a bookworm with a dotty inventor for a father; when he inadvertently offends the Beast (a prince whose heart is too hard to love anyone besides himself) Belle boldly takes her father's place, imprisoned in the Beast's gloomy mansion. Naturally, Belle teaches the Beast to love. What makes this such a dazzler, besides the amazingly accomplished animation and the winning coterie of supporting characters (the Beast's mansion is overrun by quipping, dancing household items) is the array of beautiful and hilarious songs by composer Alan Menken and the late, lamented lyricist Howard Ashman, (winning the 1991 Oscar for Best Song and Menken's score won a trophy as well). The downright funniest song is "Gaston" a lout's paean to himself (including the immortal line: "I use antlers in all of my de-co-ra-ting"). "Be Our Guest" is transformed into an inspired Busby Berkeley homage. Since Ashman's passing, animated musicals haven't quite reached the same exhilarating level of wit, sophistication and pure joy. --David Kronke

  Christie Malry's Own Double Entry is the revenge fantasy of a resentful, humiliated, somewhat simple office wage-slave who undergoes an epiphany in the unlikely surroundings of a lecture on accountancy. Malry, superbly depicted by Nick Moran as a sort of English Timothy McVeigh, decides to allocate a monetary value to every single act of, as he puts it, "casualness, indifference and mass carelessness" that besets him, and to exact appropriate recompense. As the debt grows, so do Malry's retributions, from disfiguring the paintwork of a Rolls-Royce to poisoning a substantial percentage of London. Based on the novel by B.S. Johnson, the film is funny and clever, making inventive use of flashbacks, and the echoes of broadly similar fables, like Taxi Driver and Falling Down, are never loud enough to be distracting. An overall atmosphere of tensing malevolence is abetted by a terrific soundtrack of original songs by Auteurs and Black Box Recorder songwriter Luke Haines. The only duff notes the film strikes are the initially engaging but eventually utterly baffling excursions to the Renaissance court of an Italian prince. Aside from this one over-ambitious conceit, this is a fine and mystifyingly under-rated film. On the DVD: Christie Malry's Own Double Entry includes only the original theatrical trailer as a special feature. It is all too easy to imagine that an advertisement for a product you've already paid for is exactly the kind of thing that Christie Malry would have entered in the "Debit" side of his ledger. --Andrew Muller

The world of advertising is fast becoming a woman's world and slick-talking chauvinistic womanising Nick is out of touch. Miss Congeniality: Sandra Bullock stars as a bumbling female FBI agent assigned to go undercover as a participant in the Miss United States beauty pageant when it is discovered that one of the contestants is being targeted for murder. Benjamin Bratt leads the undercover team while also playing the reluctant love interest. Candice Bergen and William Shatner manage the pageant and hire Michael Caine to turn Bullock from rough and tumble agent to stunning beauty queen. The physical transformation is impressive although the klutzy personality remains. Everything seems to be fine once the killer is suddenly caught but Bullock suspects there is more to this story and the truth eventually unfolds with an unexpected twist. Heartbreakers: Max (Sigourney Weaver) and Page (Jennifer Love Hewitt) are a mother and daughter con team with a devious routine. Max targets wealthy men lures them into marriage and then the equally gorgeous Page seduces them leaving Max to discover their infidelity and reap huge divorce settlements which tide them over until they target their next victim.
