  • Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael [1991]Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £6.99

In 1990, Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael showed Winona Ryder as cinema's top teenage role model. Her edge was a delinquency-equals-sympathy angle that held true throughout Beetlejuice, Mermaids, Heathers and Edward Scissorhands. Here as Dinky Bossetti she's chasing the ghosts of a past no one can explain. She's adopted; her town of Clyde, Ohio is mysteriously stuck in the 1950s; but weirder still is everyone's fixation with the imminent return of once-famous homecoming girl Roxy Carmichael. Dinky's school peers conform to the John Hughes 80s look and mindset, but it's the retro adult population that really winds her up. Jeff Daniels ought to be a perfectly conditioned suburbanite, but can't get over having once been married to Roxy. Imparting the secret that they'd had a child and given it away, Dinky's own confusions and obsessions suddenly make sense. The tangle of B-plots are given purpose at the same time she is. Her silent admirer (Thomas Wilson Brown) is able to approach her at last, and her school guidance counsellor becomes the friend she's never had. Ultimately the story's about the notion that no teenager ever feels like they fit in. Of course the real problem facing Ryder, Dinky and any viewer is that all teens grow up. What then? On the DVD: This is a bare-bones package with a simple two-channel stereo and 16:9 anamorphic ratio transfer. That said, it looks and sounds just fine. There's only one trailer, but someone's tried with the diner-style menu at least. --Paul Tonks

The Snows Of Kilimanjaro: This lavish big-budget blockbuster combined tales from Ernest Hemingway's life with Papa's already famous autobiographical novel of the same name. As Harry (Gregory Peck) lies wounded and delirious in an African campsite at the foot of the snow-covered slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro he recounts the story of his life in a series of flashbacks. Writing women and big-game hunting - these are the things that have defined and dominated his existence. In pursuit of all three he has travelled the globe from the salons of Bohemian Paris to the battlefields of Spain to the plains of Africa. Now in the shadow of the greatest mountain and his own approaching death from gangrene he tries to make sense of his failures. Few Hemingway novels play as well onscreen as they do on paper but under the direction of Henry King Peck and Susan Hayward who plays Harry's devoted beau turn in inspired performances but both are eclipsed by Ava Gardner as Cynthia the love he lost. A Farewell To Arms: Ernest Hemingway's tragic story was first brought to the screen in 1932 by Frank Borzage in a surprisingly sophisticated and respectful form. The director brilliantly alternates objective and subjective camerawork (for which Charles Lang won and Oscar) and obtains superior performances from his leading players Helen Hayes as the British nurse and the sublimely handsome and charming American Ambulance driver Gary Cooper. The storyline was difficult to get past the censors even in pre-code days but Paramount managed to release the film with only brief cuts. However the studio fretted that audiences would not accept the novel's bleak finale and insisted that Borzage film an alternate 'happy' ending.

Titles Comprise: A Farewell To Arms (Dir. Charles Vidor) (1957): This dense adaption of Ernest Hemingway's novel features Rock Hudson as American soldier Lt. Henry and his ill-fated love affair with British Nurse Catherine portrayed by Jennifer Jones during World War I. The two lovers will stop at nothing to be together but Lt. Henry's internal struggles ultimately threaten the relationship. Hemingway's theme of questioning the nature of war and fighting is fully recognised under Charles Vidor's direction. Hemingway's Adventures Of A Young Man (Dir. Martin Ritt) (1962): Nick Adams leaves his rural Michigan home to embark on an eventful cross-country journey. He is touched and affected by his encounters with a punch-drunk ex-boxer a sympathetic telegrapher and an alcoholic advanceman for a burlesque show. After failing to get a job as reporter in New York he enlists in the Italian army during World War I as an ambulance driver. His camaraderie with fellow soldiers and a romance with a nurse he meets after being wounded propel him to manhood. The Snow Of Kilimanjaro (Dir. Henry King) (1952): Based on the Ernest Hemigway novel of the same name Peck plays the part of a wounded hunter who is accompanied by two young women in the African wilds. Each of them tries to analyse his or her past life.
