Formed in Saddleworth Greater Manchester in September 1966 the progressive rock band has built up a major following in the UK and Germany and was the first Western rock band to play an open-air concert in pre-Glasnost East Germany. Filmed live on 14th July 1987 at Treptower Park Berlin GDR. This live concert was organised by the GDR authorities as part of celebrations to commemorate the 750th anniversary of Berlin. It is reputed to be the first time that a western rock band had ever been allowed to perform an open air concert in the GDR. Barclay James Harvest formed in the summer of 1967. From the outset the band pioneered and experimented with new forms going beyond the traditional guitar bass and drums format to include woodwind strings and brass then acquiring a Mellotron to simulate the sound of an orchestra.
