  • Viva [DVD] [2008]Viva | DVD | (06/07/2009) from £9.43   |  Saving you £6.56 (69.57%)   |  RRP £15.99

Cult campy and carnal! Viva is the acclaimed new retro sexploitation epic created by Indie feminist director Anna Biller. Meticulously photographed and vibrantly stylised Biller presents a contemporary homage to the classic sixties sexploitation extravaganzas made famous by directors such as Russ Meyer Doris Wishman and Radley Metzger. Viva details the story of Barbie (played by Biller) a bored housewife whose search for sexual thrills leads to an odyssey of swinging sexual liaisons orgies and kinky countercultural kicks. By revisiting 'classic' sexploitation through a cool contemporary and cerebral feminist lens Biller's film provides both a seductive sixties scenario as well as a self-reflexive and savvy commentary on the so-called sexual revolution of the psychedelic decade. According to the Los Angeles Times Biller's unique vision remains an endearing camp travesty musical while Indie flick bible Film Threat has concluded that Anna Biller creates worlds dripping with style that pull viewers into a Technicolor dreamland that serve as a feast for the eyes. Viva combines Playboy chic with postmodern commentary feminism with freak-out retro sexual spectacle. Welcome to the vivacious and visually stylised world of Viva!

  • The Quiet Man [1952]The Quiet Man | DVD | (15/01/2001) from £20.00   |  Saving you £-10.01 (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Blarney and bliss, mixed in equal proportions. John Wayne plays an American boxer who returns to the Emerald Isle, his native land. What he finds there is a fiery prospective spouse (Maureen O'Hara) and a country greener than any Ireland seen before or since--it's no surprise The Quiet Man won an Oscar for cinematography. It also won an Oscar for John Ford's direction, his fourth such award. The film was a deeply personal project for Ford (whose birth name was Sean Aloysius O'Fearna), and he lavished all of his affection for the Irish landscape and Irish people on this film. He also stages perhaps the greatest donnybrook in the history of movies, an epic fistfight between Wayne and the truculent Victor McLaglen--that's Ford's brother, Francis, as the elderly man on his deathbed who miraculously revives when he hears word of the dustup. Barry Fitzgerald, the original Irish elf, gets the movie's biggest laugh when he walks into the newlyweds' bedroom the morning after their wedding, and spots a broken bed. The look on his face says everything. The Quiet Man isn't the real Ireland, but as a delicious never-never land of Ford's imagination, it will do very nicely. --Robert Horton

  • Island Of Fire [1990]Island Of Fire | DVD | (02/10/2000) from £10.25   |  Saving you £11.00 (122.36%)   |  RRP £19.99

Island on Fire is, as the trailer says, "five films in one!". Despite the packaging headlining Jackie Chan this violent modern-day prison drama is an ensemble piece with Chan, a pool-player in prison for accidentally stabbing a man to death, on screen for no more than a quarter of the 92 minutes. Anyone buying this as a Chan movie may be seriously disappointed, for apart from the brevity of his role there is no trademark Chan humour. Also in the brutal and corrupt prison is Andy Lau, an undercover cop searching for the murderer of his professor, and Sammo Hung offering comedy and pathos as an inmate who keeps escaping to visit his son. There are many more characters, together with one subplot involving a mouse which anticipates The Green Mile (1999) and another concerning an assassination conspiracy which parallels Nikita, also released in 1990. Island of Fire is an uneven, always entertaining, sometimes moving film which packs an incredible amount of incident into its running time. However, it should be noted that it is an imitation of, rather than an official entry in, Ringo Lam's Fire series, which includes Prison on Fire (1987) and City on Fire (1987). On the DVD: The anamorphically enhanced 1.77-1 picture is a very good transfer of a rather grainy print, though given the many darkly lit scenes, this grain is probably part of the original film. The mono sound is fine. The film can be watched with the original Mandarin soundtrack and English subtitles, or with a much better than average English dub. The packaging claims there are over 60 minutes of extras. In fact there are nine deleted/extended scenes of variable quality, the best of which give more emotional depth to Sammo Hung's character, together with video interviews with Sammo Hung, Jimmy Wong Yu and director Chu Yen Ping. These total around 20 minutes and are interesting but not specific to the film. Also included is the theatrical trailer, Hong Kong Legends' own "music promo" trailer and eight trailers for further releases. There is also a six-page "animated" biography of Jackie Chan. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Best Men [1998]Best Men | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £5.27   |  Saving you £0.72 (13.66%)   |  RRP £5.99

Tamra Davis' Best Men must have seemed a better idea on paper than it ends up being in practice, in spite of some snappy dialogue and good central performances. A group of male friends meet Jesse (Luke Wilson) out of prison to take him to his wedding to Hope (Drew Barrymore); along the way, their friend David pops into the bank for some money and turns out to be the Shakespeare-spouting bandit Hamlet. Suddenly all of them are his unwilling accessories in a hostage situation with David's sheriff father and murderous FBI men besieging them and a crowd cheering their every move. Each of the young men has a trauma and it is not only David who gets a soliloquy: gay Green Beret Buzz (Dean Cain) has an extended period of bonding with one of the hostages, demented Vietnam vet Gonzo (Brad Dourif). The eventual action sequences are curiously perfunctory and uninteresting and the obsessive FBI man, Hoover, has little motivation. This is a likable film which goes nowhere, but has quite a lot of gentle charm along the way to its tragic ending. On the DVD: the DVD is presented in a widescreen video aspect of 2.35:1 and has Dolby surround sound; the special features are a slightly self-congratulatory "making of" featurette and the film's theatrical trailer. --Roz Kaveney
