In the mid-70s, at the suggestion of John Lennon, the celebrated journalist and film director Tony Palmer decided to document the 'Story of Popular Music' and set about interviewing and filming all the major players in the industry at that time, past and present. Even in the mid-70s this was seen as a monumental task, but despite the scale of the undertaking, Tony Palmer made a series of films that set the standard to which all subsequent biographers and documentary makers aspired to.

The Beach Boys were one of the few American groups to seriously challenge the dominance of The Beatles in the mid-Sixties in terms of commercial success and musical invention. Inspired by the genius of their leader Brian Wilson The Beach Boys produced some of the most innovative and memorable music of the era. Brian Wilson arguably achieved more on his own during that time than the combined efforts of Lennon and McCartney. Not only was he an inspired singer and songwriter he was also a brilliant arranger and producer on a par with his great idol Phil Spector. This feature-length rockumentary written and directed by Malcolm Leo (IT CAME FROM HOLLYWOOD THIS IS ELVIS) was well-received by critics and fans alike when it first appeared in the mid-eighties and is nowadays recognised as being pretty well the definitive account of The Beach Boys remarkable musical career. An American Band traces the career of the Beach Boys from their earliest days as a surfing band in 1962 up to the time of Dennis Wilsons death at the end of 1983. The groups musical development and lives during that heyday period is vividly captured by footage taken from a variety of sources including TV broadcasts movies studio and home rehearsals and live concerts. Includes all of their biggest hits including I Get Around God Only Knows Barbara Ann Sloop John B Heroes And Villains and Do It Again. The songs are interspersed with insightful interviews with the Beach Boys themselves - Brian Wilson in particular - as well as with associates like Van Dyke Parkes. The Beach Boys are one of the most iconic bands in history, having sold over 100 million records worldwide since their formation in the early sixties. This is their definitive story. The group, 3 brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis alongside their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine signed to Capitol Records in 1962. Known for their distinctive vocal harmonies they went on to release their ground breaking album Pet Sounds in 1966, followed by Good Vibrations, one of their all time greatest songs. At the end of the 60's the band looked to Europe, and in particular it was England that embraced them, where they toured and released new albums for many more years. This amazing documentary covers their achievements with 'Pet Sounds' but also deals with the difficulties Brian Wilson had with drugs and the subsequent unreleased 'Smile' album. This album, also called 'Teenage Symphony to God' by Wilson, was said to be the greatest unreleased album ever made and in this film Brian describes the making of 'Smile' as a 'period of craziness'.Also Included in the programme are very insightful and personal Interviews with Brian, Carl & Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and Van Dyke Parks as well as rare and previously unseen footage showing the group 'at home' during their time in London. This is a fascinating programme and Must-Have for any fan of The Beach Boys!
