The Bee Gees reunited in 1997 for a One Night Only concert at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada. This was their only live concert in 1997 and first U.S. concert in nearly 10 years. Together they performed their greatest hits from the 60s 70s 80s and 90s including many songs written for and made hits by other artists but never recorded by the Bee Gees themselves. With a special guest appearance by French-Canadian diva Celine Dion.
Taped as a lavish cable television special in 1997, One Night Only trades on the Bee Gees' shape-shifting career as pop survivors. Over the course of 111 minutes, this straightforward concert, produced at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and groomed for both video and CD posterity, sprints through 31 songs from their past three decades. Even after the inevitable disco jokes are expended, and the jaundiced viewer contemplates the role hats, hairspray, and comb-overs now play in dressing the once stylishly long-haired troika, the Gibb brothers' signature vocal harmonies and hook-laden song craft beg respect.Casual listeners can't be blamed for equating the Bee Gees with the dance floor bonanza they reaped through 1978's Saturday Night Fever, yet that commercial zenith was actually the culmination of a comeback for a group that had seemed washed up by the early 1970s. One Night Only thankfully takes an even-handed view of both their original late 1960s hits ("Massachusetts", "To Love Somebody", "Lonely Days"), building from a cannily Beatle-browed vocal sound, and the 1970s blue-eyed soul ("Jive Talkin'", "Nights on Broadway") that led them naturally into disco. The Fever hits are here, as are Gibb originals that clicked for other acts; the family circle also widens for a posthumous duet with their late brother, Andy Gibb, while Celine Dion gets star billing in the collaborative "Immortality". --Sam Sutherland

In Our Own Time is the compelling story of the Bee Gees career. Alongside the success there is the heartache of the tragically early deaths of first their younger brother Andy and then later Maurice. The story is told in their own words through in depth new interviews with Barry and Robin Gibb and through extensive interviews with Maurice filmed shortly before his death in January 2003.

Recorded in April 2001 at the Manhattan Centre in New York for an American cable television series The Bees Gees--Live by Request is a live anthology of the group's four decades of hits. The show allows fans at home and in the theatre to interact with their favourite stars and request favourite songs (a cross between ITV's An Audience with... and MTV's Unplugged). A great visual companion to their audio best of collection The Record, the release contains live performances of favourites along with less familiar tracks from their 25th album This Is Where I Came In. The acoustic medley of some of their best-loved compositions (including "Islands in the Stream" and "Woman in Love") is by far the high-point of the show. The release would have benefited though if the request/presenter sections of the show had been edited out. These segments lack any spontaneity, are heavily scripted and are particularly wooden, although the Gibbs' conversation with cranky fan Donna from Boulder is highly entertaining. On The DVD:Severely lacking in extras (the original programme trailer is the only added feature) the DVD is redeemed by the excellent audio recordings and stunning opening animation. The show can be played in Dolby 2.0 and 5.1, or in DTS format. Individual concert tracks can also be rapidly by accessed from the sub-menu. Due to the NTSC recording the picture quality is at times compromised, and is only available in standard picture format. --John Galilee

There have been many durable family groups in popular music over the years, but it'd be hard to name one that has lasted longer and succeeded as consistently as the trio featured in This Is Where I Came In. The Bee Gees, Barry Gibb and his younger twin brothers, Robin and Maurice, were making TV and radio appearances in Australia as early as 1960 before returning to their native England and joining the Beatles-led British invasion of America. And they're still at it more than 40 years later. All of that is duly chronicled in this two-hour documentary (produced in 2000), along with a great deal more: the personal problems that led to a break-up in the early-1970s; the unparalleled success of the Saturday Night Fever era; their occasional missteps and failures (eg: the abominable Sgt. Pepper film); the rise and tragic fall of brother Andy; the respect their success finally earned them in the 90s; and so on. The format is pretty standard, as interviews, photos, home movies and concert footage all contribute to a straight chronological telling of the Bee Gees' tale. But no stone is left unturned, and the Gibb Brothers (not to mention everyone else who's interviewed) have plenty to say. Best of all, there's lots of the Bee Gees' music, including a video of the title track of the 2001 album after which the film is named. In the end, we're left with the impression the Bee Gees would probably want us to have: that these guys have written, recorded, produced and performed literally hundreds of great songs. --Sam Graham, Amazon.com
